Thanks for the great vid as always, I 100% agree with your comments about the modernised language in the summary section. Been using the 1662 since I became a Christian for morning/evening prayer and have tried to move to the 2000 'common worship daily prayer' (from the CoE) and this 2019 bcp (which is superior to common worship imo) but each time it just sort of feels wrong/peculiar to have set prayers in contemporary English. I guess this is how kjv onlyists feel in some way lol.

I have been enjoying using this book for several months. I bought first the edition you have. Mine seemed to be without any of the printing problem yours has, but I gave it to a fiend because I thought it to be too floppy for convenience and bought the hardback, which is a more convenient size, does indeed open flat, ad has the same glossy pape.

I've been hoping for this review. I have the same edition (and also wish I'd opted for the hardcover) but, perhaps paradoxically, I can't firm up my own opinion of it until I hear what Dr. Jones has to say on the subject.

Thanks for this overview! It's an interesting attempt to create a modern language BCP that respects the work of Cranmer. I also prefer the traditional language, but this seems like a great option for those who want contemporary language. I'd love to see it with matte paper and a smaller size - I'm surprised how large it is!

The way the Anglican liturgical calendar is set up is strikingly similar to the current Roman Catholic calendar. I only know this because I'm Roman Catholic. I was surprised to see some of the optional or ecumenical feasts include popes.

The Athanasian Creed was omitted from the American prayer book in 1789 because Socinianism was in vogue at the time and that opening line seemed rather uncharitable to such unitarians. While is identification of the Holy Ghost as being "of the Father and of the Son" immediately before describing him as proceeding does betray the influence of the filioque on the writer of the creed, I don't think it's quite as problematic as the filioque itself is, in part because the original is in Latin and is specifically part of Western patrimony, like the Apostles' Creed. Part of the problem with the filioque is that the word procédit was understood by the Latins to have both ontological and economical valences, whereas the Greeks understand the word ἐκπορευόμενον that it translates to be strictly ontological. Since the Greeks do accept that the Son sends the Spirit economically and this is of Latin sourcing, I don't think it excludes them. I realize I am threading a needle here, but I would prefer not to lose a creed of Western patrimony that has been historically omitted for the appeasement of an actual heresy (Socinianism) because of linguistic misunderstandings between East and West.

I believe the hardback edition is a smaller, handy size as is the traditional language edition.

I especially like the ACNA 2019 BCP in red calfskin, wish I could find a nice 1979 in a premium leather.

A very thoughtful and learned review, as always! Do you feel the faux leather binding will hold up to the weight of the text block? I have the cloth over board version, which is smaller. And even though it is only a few years old, the paste down binding is no match for the weight of the text block and is already beginning to tear away from it. Either the paper should have been of lesser stock, a more substantial binding used, or both. I hope to either buy the faux leather you reviewed or the split calfskin version, or rebind my current copy as I have some notes in it.

Thanks for another great video! I've been thinking about getting the hardback edition since I heard about this version just a month ago. I used to use the 1979 version. I am interested also in the 1928 and 1662 versions, but actually using Elizabethan English in private prayer feels a bit forced and unnatural to me. I may buy this edition some day. BTW, have you seen the ACNA edition of the ESV with apocrypha?

I was hoping you would review the 2019 BCP. I always like to get your insights into various publications. While I prefer the language of the 1662 and the 1928 BCPs, I don't mind the modernized language. I even purchased their Goatskin New Coverdale Psalter so that I could take the Psalter with me when I travel. As you do, I prefer the Creeds without the Filioque clause. There are even Orthodox versions of the Athanasian Creed. Unfortunately, no parenthesis was placed around the Filioque in the Athanasian Creed. Its probably just an oversight. Now that I know why mid-20th Century modern liturgists added a congregational proclamation of the Mystery of Faith, I have even a greater preference for the traditional canon. Having the congregation recite during the Eucharistic Canon is borrowed from the Mozarabic Rite used in Muslim Spain. It may have encouraged Christians under Muslim rule, but I find it distracting, since those pillars of Orthodox Christian faith are already professed in the Creed. The original Muslim rulers over those Christians were tolerant. It was when the Almohads and Almoravids conquered the previous Muslim rulers and began forced conversions that the Christians being persecuted might have been encouraged by that declaration. I see the Mystery of Faith proclamation as more of a protest against the Traditional Latin Mass by 20th Century liturgists. But, I digress. I am sad that your copy has imperfections. My copy was fine. Please continue these fine reviews. They are greatly appreciated, even if I already own a copy of the book.

I have the hardback pew edition. I don't like the glossy magazine-like paper in the deluxe edition nor the corner peeling loose inside the front cover. The pew edition is far superior

Perhaps you know the answer or have an idea. In Orthodoxy, it "Lord have mercy" three times (or 12 or 40). But in Anglican prayer books, it's "Lord have mercy. Christ have mercy. Lord have mercy." Why that change?

Out of curiosity, if someone were interested in possibly switching to anglicanism from a different denomination which is better, 1928? 2019? Both?

I saw a video where you reviewed the Douay-Rheims Bible. In it you mentioned that your Cameo Bible had more of the Apocrypha than the Douay-Rheims Bible. What is the Cameo Bible? Why would the Douay-Rheims Bible not have a complete Apocrypha, since it is a Catholic Bible? Thank you.

Dr. Jones, I have an IMPORTANT question. In Churches do Christians keep commemorating the destruction of the 2nd Jewish Temple in 70 CE? Is this a topic of interest among Churchgoers? I got obsessed with the topic of the destruction of the 2nd temple, it was horrible. Jerusalem became hell on earth during the last few months. According to Islamic scholars, it became a small sample of hell on earth (hell will be something like that in the afterlife), and this was the Judgement that God pronounced within one generation of the passing of Jesus, as Jesus was predicting.

I pray the Athanasian Creed with Prime most every Sunday morning.

Nice review! But a Small respectful suggestion.. move the mic a little farther away. The hard S’s and consonant pops and crackles on every word gets a little grating after awhile. That’s a mic thing, not the way you speak :)
