The new 2020 Shelby GT500 is unlike any muscle car to come before it. With a revvy, four-cam 5.2L Voodoo-based engine topped with Eaton's largest TVS supercharger, it was bound to be special, even if it lost the raspy tone of the GT350's flat-plane engine. It makes every bit of 760 HP. But most interesting about the GT500 is the all-new Tremec dual-clutch transmission, a first for any muscle car. We've been asking for something like this, and now that its here, it does not disappoint.

Let's just take a moment to remember what the Mustang was back in the 90's. I remember car magazines (sort of) raving over the fact that the GT got a horsepower bump to 260 from 225 in '98 or '99 (when they facelifted the old SN-95).

I had an SVO back in the day, and I loved it. You could definitely tell you were in a better balanced car. It got around a corner better and stopped better than the GT. Having a ‘16 GT with the performance pack is quite a bit of fun. All I’ve changed are wheels, tires, tune and exhaust. Going with a slightly larger squared setup drastically improves the turn in. I still crave boost, but I think I’m just gonna leave it alone.

Alex_ K I need that explained, I think if the GT500 was AWD it would just be the much more of a updated muscle car, I see muscle in the shape, and performance, making it AWD doesn’t have to mean changing the motor or any of the things that make it a muscle car 🤷‍♂️

I totally understand you Matt, when you talked about having the DCT in certain cars over a manual. I’m a die hard manual guy. I have never owned an automatic or dual-clutch car, but I have driven many of them, including DCT’s, PDK’s, DSG’s, and and SSG from a McLaren MP4 12-C. There is a certain level of car when you know a manual transmission would be more work and less fun than having a dual-clutch transmission. I realized this when I drove the McLaren. I had it for 24 hours, and drove it hard. I realized that at that level, having a manual 6spd transmission would have sucked. It would have been more work than fun. So yes, I totally understand what you mean when you mentioned the GT500 and C8 Vette being better with a dual-clutch transmission. What I will never understand is a person who buys these “less than 500hp” grocery getter cars, such as a GTI/R, and get it with a dual clutch. I get the dual clutch shifts faster, but these types of cars do not need dual clutched transmissions. You can push them very very hard, and still be completely in control, with a manual. Those cars are not fast enough to “need” a dual clutch.
@R3LF13
@R3LF13 4 жыл бұрын
Could not have said it better myself. I'm also 100% #savethemanuals but there is a line where the car is just too fast, too capable, and too powerful for a manual. For me, that line is where the interruption of the driveline for the time needed to make the shift would upset the car too much given it's limit capability and power. Supercars are there obviously, and apparently so are cars like this and the ZR1 Corvette (although the auto is a slushbox, so 👎 to that). I do think the new stingray should have a manual but that was more of a production numbers/business case thing, which is too bad. Being such a savethemauals guy, this video made me want to immediately look up GT350 prices. Amazing car though!
@R3LF13

@@Neil__Craig it sounds like you haven't had the proper teaching/learning environment, which is too bad. That phase your describing is like giving up on a musical instrument because it doesn't sound good after the first couple lessons. Of course it doesn't, but it will with more time. I'm not saying this to force you to drive stick or shame you for not, but if you really love sports cars and driving than I do think you are leaving a lot of experience on the table by swearing off manuals before you've really had that ah-ha moment with them. Find a really patient teacher and stick to the empty parking lot for a while. Only venture out of that closed environment once you're totally comfortable with starting out from a stop in 1st - that's the hardest part. Once you're no longer anxious about that, you can start to build your confidence and have fun with it. Then, when you are ready to dance on the pedals on a twisty road, you'll understand what we are all so crazy about. Or maybe you won't, but at least you'll have a new skill and can speak from a more experienced place when talking about it. Side note, if you really are stuck in city bumper to bumper traffic 99% of the time, then I get it. I would probably have to have an auto daily and a manual fun car in that case, but again, it's a shame to swear it off until you've had the proper experience. 😁
@TheOwenMajor
@TheOwenMajor 4 жыл бұрын
@@Neil__Craig When I was learning to drive manual, it was almost a sudden realization on how it worked. I was horrible until something clicked and then it felt second nature. Like Craig said, just start out in a parking lot, then along a lonely dirt road, and progress up slowly.

I have a dsg gti. I sometimes wished I gotten a manual. Sometimes not. It’s not black and white. My other car, v6 Camry, no reason to get a manual, I just put around town in that.
@R3LF13
@R3LF13 4 жыл бұрын
@@Neil__Craig that's cool. I come at manual transmission evangelism from the prospective of pure driving experience. My favorite thing is a car with good handling, just enough power, a manual transmission and a curvy road with no traffic (or off roading but that's a whole other thing). In that situation, it's all about the visceral experience. I wouldn't go so far as to say the car is just a tool for the job, but it's like Burt Monroe said, the reward is in the doing of it. I also put it this way: when driving for the fun of it, the fun of it is all that matters. This is the context that I feel like any car guy who is inclined to that sort of driving owes it to themselves to at least learn manual to the point of seeing what all the fuss is about. But that is not to say that that's the only kind of car guy there is or should be. I totally see how an auto is the better tool for the job your describing.

I'll always love and own at least one manual car. That being said, the fact of the matter is that a good DCT is just objectively faster, and when tuned well can even make a car more fun and engaging in a different way since you think less about shifting, and more on car control.

Definitely awesome, especially in the tunnel. It's definitely $$$ though. I have a S550 already so the only difference for me would be the drivetrain, and that's not enough for me to justify buying it. But IMO even if I didn't have that and you compare it head to head with competitors, this $75k is the equivalant of the C8 configuration that I want which has the 2LT package upgrade, mag ride, and front lift kit. For $75k that's an affordable supercar. For $75k this is just an S550 with a really cool drivetrain.

Back in 1984 I was camping and a car went by my tent that sounded better than most cars. I opened the tent and a park ranger was in a 5.0 LX Coupe so I asked him about it and he bragged how awesome it was. I went to Ford in 1985 and special ordered (The 5.0 LX wasn't an easy option until 1986) a new '85 LX 5.0 Coupe police special with a 5spd and all the goodies and ran a whopping 14.3@97mph and was blown away. Ford was back baby! Fast forward to many Mustang's later and in 2018 I buy a Crimson '18 GT with the A10 and it runs an 11.7@121 and it's a completely different animal than any before it. Now the GT500 comes out and it too is a completely different animal and it's out of my reach. Ford has come a long way, the big 3 has come a long way, we are spoiled by how awesome these Pony/Muscle/Sports cars are today. I hope to be able to buy the GT500 some day, thanks for the great review!!

5:50 I know what you mean but I would say that Mustangs have had "AMG horsepower" since introducing the 10 speed automatic and new 460hp Gen 3 Coyote featuring revised induction, increased compression, 16 fuel injectors. (borrowed a lot of tech from the Boss 302 and GT350) 0-60 is in the 3.9 second range and 12.1@120 in the 1/4 for bone stock.

That and a Mustang GT is a $35,000 dollar working stiff's pony car. Of course it's not going to feel exactly like an AMG would deliver power, but why would you expect that for for the price? What you get for your money is amazing.

Despite its great looks, I was certain the GT500 would be overkill when it was announced. Oh, how it's dynamically proven me wrong. I'd still take a GT350R over it, but without being too similar to it this is another engineering masterpiece from Ford. Big respect.

Tremec really makes some incredible transmissions. For the s650, ford should scrap the mt82 manual and put only tremec manuals in the GT. Even if that means getting rid of the manual option in the base mustang.

Regarding launch control, it may be the same in the GT500 as it is with my PP2 where you have to go and configure the launch RPM. It sounds like it was just set low by default but it can go higher.
