In 1997, Honda introduced the Type S performance brand for its Japanese domestic market NSX sportscar. Four years later, Type S made its debut in the U.S. via the 3.2 CL. Of the Type S models that would follow, the most memorable was the 2007 Acura TL Type S. With subtle styling tweaks, a more potent 3.5-liter V6 engine, and an available manual gearbox, the TL Type S was an affordable, stylish alternative to German and American 4-door sport sedans.
After more than a decade without a new Type S model, Acura is finally reviving the sub-brand with the 2021 Acura TLX Type S. Like its TL predecessor, the TLX Type S gets a mild makeover, a V6 engine (now turbocharged), and sportier driving dynamics. Sadly, the manual transmission didn't span the gap between models, but Acura promises that updates to its 10-speed automatic gearbox will satisfy enthusiasts. Is more power, better handling, sharper styling, and a well-equipped starting price of $53K enough to lure shoppers from vehicles like the Audi S4, BMW M340i xDrive, and Cadillac CT5-V? Find out in this in-depth review.
Options Equipped:
- Tiger Eye Pearl Paint: $500
- Pirelli P Zero tires: $800
- Carbon Fiber trim: $713

This is 14k usd less than the bmw m340i , 10k cheaper than the audi S4 , etc etc and more reliable. This is a comfortable daily driver and some highway power. Theirs a reason it weighs 300lb more than its competitors , it has more NHV materials for sound deadening , and more room.

Hopefully the 2023 model will have a H.U.D, rear charging ports, rear heated seats and a power tilt telescopic steering wheel. I think it should all just be one complete package without having to sacrifice the v6 just to get these features in the smaller engine. Also some wireless apple carplay and android auto. I mean you can get the accord, they just gotta believe in themselves! Nice review miles, great as always keepin it light and fun. Also I forgot to mention they should go ahead and put that touch screen in there, let people have the option to use the touch pad.......Ok im finished, I think I let it all out. 😌

yeah ? and do you want them to charge 10k more ? the TLX 2.0 Turbo and Type S both undercut the competitors BY a large % . The Type S is 10k USD cheaper than the S4 , 13k USD cheaper than the bmw m340i and 5k cheaper than the lexus IS , and similiar money to the genesis g70 but the g70 has a much more basic interior material cost and layout .

The Type-S has a lot of value in it's pricing. One wonders how much it's weight affects a slowness as compared to it's rivals. Also, it's been pointed out that the transmission shifts more slowly in manual mode versus it's auto-sport mode. As you, many have also pointed out the short-shift "feature" that selects the next higher gear before redline is reached. I believe a tcu reflash will cure that, just as an ecu reflash to get the power closer to 400bhp, if the brakes can tolerate it. Or, just buy a BMW 240i x-drive. Problems solved.

BMW 340i X-drive definitely provides a lot more performance, no doubt. But one thing many of you reviewers fail to point out, is reliability, resale value, and cost of ownership, which should be a HUGE factor in deciding what to buy, and Acura blows the beamer out of the water in those very important categories. That Type S is overbuilt with, for starters, an engine with forged internals. You can flog it all day and it will remain reliable for many years with little to no problems. The BMW on the other hand...well, let's just say it's a lease car. In other words, you want nothing to do with it after the first few years or when the warranty expires. The Acura is a car to actually own and rely on.
@darrell9616
@darrell9616 Жыл бұрын
You should update some of your information before making a purchase. Acura and Honda have had some well-documented reliability problems over the last few years, with several class-action lawsuits filed (Google them). The BMW B58 engine in this BMW was been widely regarded as reliable as it's the same engine used in the Toyota Supra. No one knows what the long-term reliability will be for this car. If you like what it offers, that's great. However, using dubious 'facts' to justify one's opinion is a really bad idea.

@TheProstaff85
@TheProstaff85 Жыл бұрын
I agree 100%, I rather put my money on a car that is safe, stable, stiff, have some performance when you need it, holds value, great looks and built to last than just putting higher turbo PSI pressure and saving weight just to impress 0-60mph drag time. Acura went with reliability, less maintenance and longevity compared to German rivals...but if that's not your thing, nothing wrong with it as well...I love German cars as well...But honestly, I mean how often do you really floor and go all out in the real world daily driving. How many of us really go tracks on their luxury sport sedans...most of us pay money to drive luxury brands, just wants to feel good about their cars, and take care of it. This car was never meant to be a track car, neither are Audi S4 and BMW M340. Acura is just showing what they do best on this Type-S model. If you want more, NSX is a proof Acura can build super cars as well and very good at it..

I did a test drive on this car yesterday. The chassis feels great, it doesn't feel like it's heavy even though it is. It's more rigid, and the suspension and SH-AWD are a bit better than my old 2018 TLX. But I dislike the powerplant. It just has too much turbo lag, not enough power for the weight of the car, doesn't rev high. It has a very rubber-band-like feel to it. I'd love this car with the old naturally aspirated 3.5 V6 in it. Or maybe with an electric motor on top to compensate for the turbo lag or something, like the NSX ... Either way, I'm not gonna be buying it, particularly not over MSRP. It's a disappointment ...

It only works over a certain speed (40 mph, I think), and moreover the warning indicator is not where you think it's going to be. Apparently, Acura engineers believe its location on the interior of the cabin falls within the driver's peripheral vision. Uh-uh, it doesn't. I am sorry that all you guys test drive the TLX Type S, not one of you seem to know that there are 2 USBs 2- 12 volts plus the wireless charging, why do many of you forget the 12 volt by the front passenger knee? Not one of the many reviewers seem to mention it. maybe the next time you will. I am looking and listening. Thanks for otherwise stellar reviews

Acura lied about that 0-60 time it's wrong. The Type S does not have a 4.5 second 0-60. Plenty of videos showing 5.2 seconds in dragys & the Type S gets gapped by the S4 & the Genesis G70 which has 0-60 times as 4.4 seconds & 4.5 seconds respectively. It's a shame that Acura has resorted to lying.

G70 and s4 get up to 0-60 in 4.2 and 4.3 seconds
@mutualdecline2174
@mutualdecline2174 3 жыл бұрын
@@RaY_77W S4 has a 0-60 time of 4.4 which Audi claimed when it came out though a few car mags got 4.3 seconds & the C43 is 4.2 secs & it beats the S4 in drag races. The awd G70 trim is 4.5 secs, Genesis claims this & the rwd is 4.7 sec which are the numbers that car & driver got as well, so did other mags. The G70 isn't 4.2 seconds because it sometimes barely loses to the Q50 which has a manufacturer 0-60 time of 4.5 seconds.

I can't stop driving my 2005 Acura TL but the 2021 Acura TLX is completely different. It's not a "Sport Sedan" (D-segment). It's a large executive car (E-segment) and feels large inside and out. Consumer Reports gave the 2021 TLX a Road Test score of 67 and an overall score of 56. Those are not good numbers. The seats hurt your back. The trackpad infotainment is hard to use.
@joeblacc8573
@joeblacc8573 Жыл бұрын
One thing I can wholeheartedly disagree with is that the seats do NOT hurt your back. Also it's a heavy car but it disguises it's weight well. Don't let consumer reports make u miss out on a good thing. Worth a test drive. (Agree about infotainment)
@scottscott5827

@@joeblacc8573 I drove the 2021 TLX for 4 days. #1. The seats have something inside them for lumbar support that jab into your back a bit and the lumbar support controls do not allow that to be reversed. #2. It's 75" wide. That's too wide to feel sporty. It's the same width as the Acura RDX SUV. #3. The trackpad infotainment is very hard to use. After about an hour of driving it each day I really wanted to get out of it.

@@scottscott5827 As an owner of the vehicle I haven't had any issues. Could be an issue with that specific one. Seats fit me fine at 6'0 190lbs. And the infotainment controls are definitely the worst I've ever used. We agree there.
