The toyota highlander has been the choice for reliability focused responsible parents for over 2 decades now
Last year saw an all new generation of highlander for only the 4th time
But what i have with me here is the highlander hybrid in limited trim. Let’s take it for a spin
So I’m going to level with you guys here - I always film my own b-roll for these reviews but that always takes at minimum 2 hours - and it’s been snowing and single digits all week so i apologize, but I’m going to use toyota footage
However, this cold gives us a good opportunity to do some snow and cold weather testing.
First I want to say I’m thankful for the heated seats which are level adjusted to the interior temp of the car
The heated steering wheel which i started feeling through my mittens
And the powerful, yet quiet multi zone climate control
So once I was all cozy - I finally set off to get some driving impressions
Yesterday I took this to Costco in an actual snowstorm. And immediately I started making comparisons between this and my 4runner
This highlander and my 4 runner are essentailyl the same size, but with a few very significant differences
First, this Highlander is built on a unibody architecture so it handles more like a car
The steering is infinitely better
The body control is so much better
You just feel more in control of the car
Another thing is the differences in AWD vs 4WD
My 4runner is a selectable 4wd or 4x4 and without getting too technical the Highlander is “full” time AWD in the sense that you dont have to shift the transfer case yourself
The transfer case on the highlander is built into the trans and the on-board computer decides when it needs to send power to the back axle
This more sophisticated system results in a smarter and better traction on the roads with a sacrifice in offroad durability and ruggedness.
Not that any rational person would ever demand anything more than a leisurely jaunt through a field for a county fair from their highlander still the distinction needed to be made.
So this excellent traction instills a lot of confidence which means i can unleash ALL 243 HP from the might 2.5 4cyl
These numbers dont really indicate supercar, but there’s also 2 electric motors that provide immediate electric torque making this feel pretty peppy
I’m not going to tell you this powertrain is exactly inspiring, but I actually love the weird sound this thing makes - like a sad wookie
PLus combined 36 mpg is pretty spectacular
Which reminds me I should mention EV mode……*
So ultimately, the Highlander hybrid is incredibly comfortable, especially in the winter, the visibility is excellent, the dynamics are competent if not a little numb, the powertrain has some character and manages to get over 35 mpg….in something that’s so big and spacious it hardly fits in my garage
Now driving a car is one thing, but occasionally you’ll have to look at it sitting your driveway and while I preferred the design philosophy of the previous generation, this new one has grown on me in my week with it...namely the depth to the red paint.
Talk about specific exterior trimmings and transition to the interior
The cabin on the highlander in limited trim is great.
The dash is short so it feels very spacious
The a pillars are skinny for added visibility and light
The leather seats are tan making it feel bigger as well
But in a family SUV like this it’s almost more important what happens behind the driver
Talk about space and amenities*
So with that, the only thing left to discuss is price and where it fits.
The Highlander hybrid starts at 38,500
And this limited trim is just over 45,000
If you can do without some of the bells and whistles go for a lower trim package, but my spoiled self would pony up the extra cash
Over 45k sounds like a lot of money but when you consider that there’s really no other hybrid competitor, this hybrid starts to make a lot of sense

I own the 2022 bronze edition cement color and love it. The only mistake that I think I made was not getting the limited or platinum trim with more bells and whistle as I intend on owning it for a while.

Sad that you didn't do enough research to really understand the Highlander Hybrid AWD system. There is No transfer case. There is no rear wheel driveshaft. There is no rear differential. What there is, is a rear Electric Motor/Generator Drive axle. It's an electric motor and a gear reduction together inside the rear drive assembly. This results in a much simpler mechanical system, without the complexity and weight of a transfer case system. In fact, the "transmission" is nothing like a traditional multi-speed gearbox of any kind. The Toyota Synergy Drive system combines 2 electric Motor/Generators and a planetary gearset to combine the mechanical drive torque from the ICE engine, with the efficiency of the electric drive motor. There are no changing of gears, no engaging and disengaging of friction clutches, no mess of hydraulic controls... ONE planetary gearset. This planetary gearset connects to (a) crankshaft of the gas engine, (b) the main drive Motor/Generator, and (c) the front wheel drive differential... which is also internally integrated within the "transmission". The main electric motor can drive the front wheels alone for low speeds and initial acceleration for maximizing efficiency, then the gas ICE engine is started to add more torque. But the gas engine doesn't have a "starter motor" like old fashioned cars. This is where the 2nd motor/generator comes in... it is directly attached to the crankshaft of the gas engine and can start it up smoothly and completely quietly... with no "starter motor" to ever wear out. Also note there's no torque converter, as a regular "automatic transmission" has... more reduction of wear-prone parts. Likewise... even the Aircon compressor is stand-alone electric drive... no belt drive with a magnetic clutch... in fact the HiHy doesn't have ANY accessory drive belts, because there is no alternator, and no power steering pump. The power steering is pure electric motor Assist, not messy hydraulics... and the 12v battery is charged by a electric converter that gets power from the high voltage Hybrid battery system. And the 12v battery is much smaller and lighter because it never has to "crank start" the gas engine. Changing the speed and direction of the main electric motor combined with the gas engine speed is how the transmission changes output speed through the planetary gearset... no surges, no hesitation of gear changes... it all happens completely smoothly... continuously variable output speed & torque... with no friction clutch materials to wear out. Then... in slick conditions, or. if you need more drive torque than the front wheel system can safely provide (to minimize tire slip), the rear drive system is energized and provides additional drive power... completely asynchronous to the FWD system. In coast-down conditions (downhill or coming to a stop), both FWD and RWD electric Motor/Generators are used in reverse... to Generate electricity that is directed back into the high voltage battery pack... converting kinetic energy into stored-up electric energy that will be used to propel the vehicle. This regenerative braking is why HiHy brake pads last nearly the life of the vehicle. My 2008 HiHy has brake pads that are over 250k miles... and at the most recent annual Toyota inspection, are still in good condition. I'm a design engineer from the 80's and this vehicle has been more reliable than I could have ever imagined... it has only needed oil changes and lube and tires... and a change of spark plugs every 100k miles. But that's why my personal daily driver is a pure electric car... essentially no maintenance. The HiHy has been my wife's vehicle, and if we EVER need to replace it, she wants another HiHy... but we'll most likely get another EV by then. Yeah... Toyota has an incredibly well designed Hybrid system... but it's sad they haven't embraced the EV market... as of 8/2021.

Wow, very impressive describtion of how this vehicle is designed and how hybrid work.. many thanks for the great feedback here... now, one question here with respect to ac... does it work when the car is not on gas engine and can work on electric motor... if i have to wait at parking lot for couple of hours, is it ok to have ac on without worrying of any engine overheating?

@@muhammadabutaki2686 Since the aircon is completely disconnected from the gas engine (ICE), it can run any time,as long as the vehicle is in "run" mode. The gas engine will stop running once the hybrid battery is charged enough, and the aircon can continue to run. But there's a catch... the aircon uses quite a bit of electricity, and will deplete the hybrid battery within 30 minutes or so. But... the car computer will detect this and automatically starts the gas engine in order to charge the hybrid battery, then it will shut off. This usually takes just a few minutes, depending on the cooling temperature and the outside temperature. Overall the gas engine probably only runs about 10-20% of the time while doing this. My wife appreciates this when she has to wait for our son at his internship job when it's hot outside. It's faaaaar more efficient than doing the same thing with a regular ICE cat, where the gas engine has to run all the time. In my EV though, I can run the aircon for hours and hours if not driving... because the battery pack capacity is faaar greater than in a hybrid vehicle. The aircon in my EV probably uses about as much energy as driving at 2 MPH. NOTE... this whole "feature" is not true for heating the inside of a hybrid vehicle though... they still use the gas engine for heat source... but my EV uses the aircon system I reverse... "heat pump" mode, so I can get heat any time. (BMW i3)

Good review, I like the "moaning Wookie" analogy LOL. I have the Platinum hybrid and I'm very pleased with it overall, it's not perfect but I love the tech and saving gas. I didn't pay anything close to sticker, so there is a value proposition for savvy buyers and it's the only hybrid in the 7 passenger SUV segment. Note: The re-designed Kia Sorenta (2021) does offer a hybrid, but no AWD at time of release. An AWD version is expected later in the year but for my money I went for reliability and quality in a 4th gen Highlander. The Palisade and Telluride best the Highlander in many categories, but again I went with a proven commodity over time and a strong hybrid battery warranty - Palisade and Telluride don't offer a hybrid option.
