What's worse than losing a drag race in a WRX? Losing to an Outback. Today, I try to find out why these two are so comparable in speed, and what I think should be done to make this an issue of the past.
Thank you, Royal on the Eastside, for letting me test out various WRXs and Outbacks over the year to make this video possible.

Subaru made some weird decisions with this WRX that I'm hoping will be resolved later on. Like why state that you expect 70% of WRXs sold to be manuals, then hold the highest proformance options to the GT trim that only comes with a CVT.

Owned a MY06 Forester XT manual and had similar low down performance against the MY06 WRX; it was a cracker but a very different beast to the WRX. The XT Forester was a very effective sleeper/tourer, it didn’t attract attention but got up and boogied when I asked it to. I owned it for 13 years and over 300,000km, sounds like the XT Outback will fill that role nicely.

I haven't driven a WRX, but I moved up from my '18 Forester Touring (and I loved it) to a '21 Outback Touring XT (revamped/new to me safety features and 'turbo' got my attention). I've been very pleased with the Outback. I love knowing I have turbo as needed, but also space. Our road trip to New Orleans (8 hours each way) was exceptionally comfortable. Husband fell in love with the heated steering wheel when he drove the return leg. Now he wants a heated s/w, and Ford has no ability to easily upgrade his F-150 XLT w/even an OEM one, so the newer car hunt has begun...I may have won him over to the Subaru side...and if only they had at least a new version of the Baja, he'd have bought it already. We're going to test drive a lightly used Legacy Limited XT, if it's still there today. My brother switched from being a Ford Mustang guy to a WRX (manual) earlier this year and he LOVES IT! He also loves that his toddler daughter prefers it over their Santa Fe because: zoomy!

That would be one tall wagon. The current Legacy doesn't handle well. The Legacy/Outback is now more SUV/Crossover rather than sporty sedan/wagon when it comes to dynamics and handling. That's pretty much the reason why the Levorg has replaced the Legacy outside of Canada and the US.
@nightVzn
@nightVzn Жыл бұрын
No question the Outback is a crossover thanks to its raised suspension, but suggesting the Legacy is tall? It's much lower to the ground than the Outback, has less ground clearance than some past versions of the WRX, and looks like a regular car, as would a wagon variant if one still existed. The current Legacy has a surprisingly nimbler chassis than the last generation and is mainly held back by comfort/efficiency-focused OEM tires. The sport-tuned suspension on the newly revised Sport trim could unlock even more potential if Subaru was serious when they said "sport-tuned" (we'll have to wait for reviews). But driving an Outback back-to-back with a Legacy, the Outback's higher center of gravity and taller sidewalls are very apparent. A proper Legacy wagon would cater to a very different niche. Too bad they wouldn't sell it in the U.S. since non-lifted wagons are ignored by consumers here.

Outback XT curb weight: 3946 lbs / WRX curb weight: 3537 lbs. It is absolutely bananas that the outback is quicker (in a straight line), whilst using lesser tires, and cheaper gas, and 409 lbs heavier!!! They both seem to have the 4.11 final drive as well. It's a very bizarre situation.

I have an RS manual, which has most of the good stuff, but no adaptive dampers, which I would like. No EyeSight of course and AEB will become mandatory here in the next few years, so that may be the end of manual Subarus 😔

Love your WRX videos. They're brutally honest and unbiased. A couple things I noticed in your video that I think you were wrong on: 1) This particular WRX model year can run lower octane gas, the manual even says so. I think people are doing it without issues too just to prove there's no knock. I think that the lower boost (12 vs 25?) compared to last year's helps with that. 2) Every single person who's seen the car in real life tells me that its roomy! The trunk and the back seat is just as good as any old Ford Fusion, Tarus, Chevy Malibu, Toyota Camry, etc. But you are over 6 ft tall which is definitely going to change your perspective from my friends and family who mostly hover around 6 ft or less. (Wasn't mentioned in this video, but your last ones made it sound like the backseat was a disappointment). You bring up a good point about the amount of units Subaru might expect them to sell. That's really insightful thinking... It makes me worry, gone are the days when the practical but sporty sedan platform was alive. SUVs, trucks and EVs are the thing now...
@Realistick
@Realistick Жыл бұрын
Thank you, I actually bring up all of those things in my full review. The manual clearly states the car is designed and rated for premium only. Almost all new cars will have knock sensors but even in the owner's manual, subie says only use regular if premium is not available. And they even warn that you may still get knocking that will require you to get premium anyway! Mazda's 2.5 turbo is an example of an engine that can truly run on either octane (it has performance ratings for either). Also you have the boost ratings wrong, it dropped from 14 or 15 psi to 12, not 25. And that doesn't mean that it will run on premium or regular as the GTI is RATED for regular and has over 20 psi. It's not my height, this is certainly less spacious than a Subaru impreza, honda civic, Hyundai elantra, vw jetta. It's not to an unpractical degree as I literally stuffed myself in the trunk for the full review, but it is less spacious than the cars you mentioned.

The new WRX has an extremely conservative stock tune, it's almost laughable how little power it seems to make compared to the previous generations stock for stock. However, with just a tune or intake+tune it absolutely obliterates the previous generation WRX with the same mods. Since the CVT models have different tuning methods, it's hard to tell how much additional power the GT would get, but it would definitely be faster than the OXT.

I love my '22 XT. I put the Burger Motorsports JB4 on and run E30 fuel. I DESTROY stock WRXs and pull hard on them from 100mph and up...serveral car lengths ahead. If I wanted a great handling car thats comparable to the WRX, I'd go with a GTI. it will slap the shit out of the WRX in all comparisons...except snow-no concern here in SoCal.

The WRX needs to move to regular fuel. Most stations neare switched to only offering regular and ethanol free. The ethanol free is way more expensive and only 89 octane so it doesn't meet the min octane requirement.

About the differing EPA ratings: The WRX suffers in this regard from having SI-Drive. Regulations required that it be certified in its least efficient throttle mode, Sport Sharp, which does a number of things that hurt efficiency (most aggressive throttle response, perpetually functioning in stepped-shifting mode, not using the highest ratio even during steady cruising, etc.). In real-world driving, with SI-Drive set to its most efficient mode during relaxed cruising, it'll greatly outperform its official rating. Given that the Outback XT doesn't have SI-Drive, it doesn't have this EPA-ratings problem. This is also why the manual WRX has a higher EPA rating than the automatic, since only the automatic gets SI-Drive. And the WRX's wider/stickier tires probably do it no MPG favors compared to the Outback. But it is hard to justify the WRX's need for premium when its output and performance are so similar to the Legacy/Outback XT's on essentially the same engine.
@Realistick
@Realistick Жыл бұрын
That’s interesting and makes sense but im also a little doubtful as there are many cars that offer a sport mode like the GTI that get much better mileage. Even the Forester Sport has sport sharp and it doesn’t hurt that either for the epa.

In the interest of not being one of those commenters who make unsubstantiated claims on the internet, I've been trying to provide one of the sources for my info, but KZfaq keeps rejecting my comment if it includes a link. To find it, search "CNET 2015 Subaru WRX: Cornering champ and commute-ready." That was from when the last-gen WRX debuted with the CVT and SI-Drive (then, as now, the 6MT did not have SI-Drive). The author attributes the MPG ratings to a Subaru spokesperson's explanation of EPA rules. I think the biggest reason SI-Drive hurts fuel economy more than your typical sport mode is that the more aggressive modes don't allow the transmission to upshift to its highest ratio. It would be like driving a 6MT on the highway but never going above 4th or 5th gear...fuel economy would take a significant hit. As for why the Forester doesn't seem to suffer the same problem, I'm not sure why but there are several possible explanations. The CNET article says the EPA offered a burdensome alternative that Subaru didn't use for the WRX but that might have made more sense for a volume model like the Forester where fuel economy matters more. Since the WRX is low-volume to begin with and most WRXes are sold with manuals, the CVT's poor EPA ratings probably have a negligible CAFE effect. Also, Subaru's literature says all Foresters come with some version of SI-Drive, and if it's like the WRX, Intelligent mode is the only one that lets the transmission use its highest ratio. Meaning all trim levels would be similarly affected.

Is the Outback XT really "quicker" though? And how many folks are going to launch these cars regularly that the 0-60 matters? If I put these two cars on the track or take them to an autocross, which will be "quicker" then? My Ascent for example has 260hp and 277tq at the crank but it hauls my family around and drives like a boat. I take my tuned 2020 WRX CVT out on some windy mountain roads and it's a load of fun.

As I said in the video, and the thumbnail, the difference here is negligible but the fact that it is so similar just points out some flaws with the current wrx auto and using the premium gas tune.

The premium gas decision on the WRX when the outback takes regular, makes zero sense to me. I just can't understand it. Seems like they missed a trick here as it would have been a financial incentive to get the WRX compared to competitors if it took regular. Also, I cannot fathom how the hell prices got so high. They are STI prices, absolutely banana's, but they do NOT have the brakes, trans, diff. Seriously... the trans is still the VA trans (manual) which is know to be weak. The only thing the WRX has got going for it at the moment realistically, is that tuning potential is huge on the stock block. People are getting 400 bhp and torque with relative ease. But then we need to consider upgrading things .. you know.. like brakes... transmission... diffs....

@Realistick

Subaru doesn't offer the extended warranty, it's a third party company that does that (a dealership will usually sell the warranty for them). It depends on your budget and priorities. The crosstrek has a good reputation and is usually cheap to fix so I would personally hold off on an extended warranty unless I was under budget. If you keep cars for over 6 years and really value peace of mind, go for it!
