Looking for an affordable EV? Well, it might be time to put your money where your mouth is. The Equinox EV is here and it'll be the most affordable way to get 300+ miles of range in the USA. This 2LT trim costs $35,795, and by the end of the year the base 1LT will be down to $27,495. (Inc destination, less $7,500 point of sale tax credit.) That's only $1,100 more than the 2025 gas Equinox, so what's it like? In a word: normal.
Yep, if you're not looking for a funky spaceship, this EV is the one for you. On the outside it's more aerodynamic and a bit lower than the gas Equinox, but it mostly just looks like one of the Chevy family. Similarly on the inside the Equinox shares most of the design cues with the Traverse and the 2025 Equinox. The only major compromise is the cargo area which is smaller due to the lower roofline.
Chevy says that the FWD models will go 0-60 in ~8 seconds while the eAWD models will drop that just below 6 seconds, or in other words: pretty similar to many mainstream small crossovers. A regular Equinox with the 1.5L turbo is around 8 seconds, and some of the faster mainstream options get down to around 6 (unless you're looking at A RAV4 Prime which is around 5.5).
Why get an Equinox EV over a Blazer EV, or vice versa? It's going to depend on what you're looking for in your next bow tie. The Equinox will be only with FWD or a FWD biased dual motor system (for now) while Blazer can be had with FWD, RWD, FWD biased AWD or RWD biased AWD. The Blazer also will have a 557 HP option and a bigger battery for a hair more range. The Equinox is the more pragmatic option.
The main thing I noticed today is how roomy the interior is. Compared to most of the competition, the Equinox has more usable headroom and legroom and it doesn't have an enormous (and expensive) glass roof to get that extra room. Want even more legroom? There's a Blazer for that, but oddly the Blazer won't have more cargo room, it actually has a hair less due to the differing priorities.
Back on the price: AWD adds around $3,300 and if you want SuperCruise, you can get that as a stand alone option on the 2LT and above for $2,700. Want everything? You'll end up at $48,285 with all the factory options (after the tax credit) or $55,785 if your income if over the qualifying caps. For most folks that puts the Equinox below the RAV4 Prime and most of the mainstream PHEV crossovers, and even without the tax credit it's awfully close with more features (like SuperCruise) than are available on the PHEV competitors.
What do you think? Is this the EV that could sway folks? Are you waiting for a next-gen Bolt instead?

There have been studies that show that when evs hit 3 metrics: range over 300 miles, charging speed at or under 30 minutes, and price under 36k... over 50% US adoption hits. This is the first EV in the US to reach those metrics. This should be revolutionary. Pity about the CarPlay thing tho... that really seems to be holding a lot of folks back, I hope they correct this soon.

I don't want an all-glass roof. I have a panoramic sunroof in my XT5 and while I do love it, I still use the shade on hotter days. Alot of these glass roofs don't have shades and just leads to baking the freakin interior and the AC system to have to work twice as hard. Why is this a thing now? Vents for rear passengers. A fairly normal shift lever (considering). For me it checks pretty much all the boxes. Just a few years ago that charge speed would have been pretty good. I’m not really a Chevy guy, only thing that would seriously interest me would be a truck. I have said for a decade now that carmakers need to make a "normal" car with an electric drivetrain. Normal meaning it has an instrument cluster in front of the steering wheel, no gratuitous futuristic exterior/interior styling, modest performance (like the ICE version), and reasonably priced. Looks like the Equinox will test my theory - as long as they didn't bungle parts of it and end up having massive recalls or other quality/reliability issues. I hope it is a great seller.

I'm currently driving a Kia Niro EV which is the electric version of the Niro ICE. It is a totally normal car with real knobs and buttons for climate and infotainment. The Equinox looks to be very similar plus it qualifies for the $7500 incentive and provides 300+ miles range. Highly likely it will replace the Kia in a couple years.

Did this car have the rear view monitor option instead of the mirror? Also, for your review I would certainly appreciate a cost/benefit comparison between the 2LT and 3LT trims, as those are the two I suspect most people would buy. Yes, we know the 1LT is $35k, but I think it's a safe assumption to say that that trim will be harder to find and made at lower volume.

I notice the dashboard's reflection on the windshield and it appears very pronounced, or it could be just the camera angle. When you get to test drive the vehicle, kindly give an opinion on this. The first gen Ford Edge had this issue and it was enough for owners to let go of their cars. It was really bad on a sunny day. Dashmat can be an option but not all like to go that route. Thank you.

Looks really nice with a great value proposition especially with the tax credit, $35k for 300 miles is great if Chevy actually produces the base model in meaningful volume. But… the Ultium reliability issues still are a bit of a concern to me, also from what I’ve seen the charging curves on Ultium models aren’t great, them refusing to quote a 10-80% charging time makes me feel that the charging will continue not to be that good, and of course the lack of CarPlay and Android Auto just plain sucks, no other way to put it, probably a deal breaker for many, I know it would make me reconsider.

The reason why GM decided to take CarPlay and AA out of the google based system is simple. Greed. They want to make customers and businesses pay them for data and services. It’s ridiculous. It’s just a simple app that they remove. It’s on the Gas vehicles. It’s on all of the Volvo cars and the Fords will start having it on their vehicles in the next year. ( it’s already on the 2024 Lincoln Nautilis.) The only justification is that they can’t control their greedy nature. I am an Apple user who has a iPhone. And like 80 percent of us, I won’t be buying a GM vehicle until they fix this.

A good video. Some notes to add. Both the Equinox EV and Blazer EV are on GM's BEV3 architecture. But the Equinox EV is on the short wheelbase while Blazer EV is on Long Wheelbase. This is why the Blazer has more rear seat room. Also the Blazer can fit the 12 module (102KWh) battery pack (as an option). While the Equinox EV can only fit the 10 module (85KWh) pack. Also the Blazer EV is a lot wider than the Equinox EV. With the Blazer having a wider track and longer wheel base it will be interesting to contrast the ride and handling between the two. The limitation for building Ultium vehicles came down to module assembly. GM hired an automation company to automate the assembly of the 24 cells into each module. However this didn't go well. This is apparently fully resolved and GM is off to the races now.

The thing nobody is mentioning with the equinox is the pack voltage. While it reports 150kW charging, the actual battery is about 300v nominal based on a conversation I had with a GM engineer at a charging station. This means if you head to a chargepoint cpe250 or other less prominent DC fast charging locations, you'll be capped at about 50kW fast charging as the cables are 200 amp limited. You need to be at nicer stations with cooled cables also capable of doing 500amps. Those are not the most common stations at this time.

It pushes all the buttons for me, but would like RWD, sunroof, and a CD player. Styling is just fine and interesting. GM aerodynamicists put some effort into that and the interior and cargo capacity is two thumbs up. Available range in either drive version is not an issue for me or most. Would like the faster AWD model, but cost would be a consideration, plus I would be tempted too often to use the power and that would add to degradation of batteries and drive system, tires, though, I would be able to haul a heavier trailer. Pricing is a bit high for me cuz I probably wouldn't qualify for the Fed, though, the state might have some monies to add. As I see it currently, there are a lot of good used EV's coming on the market and that would have to be considered versus any new EV. Looking forward, Alex, to your drive report.

@@rcpmac they are, but Android Automotive and Android Auto aren’t the same thing. With Android Automotive, it’s the head unit OS and requires the vehicle to have data connection to use features like the map or music streaming services. Android Auto and CarPlay runs on your phone, uses your phone’s data connection to provide maps and music and projects it to the head unit. Since GM did away with Android Auto and CarPlay on their EVs, you now will need a data plan once the free data trial ends, and you’re at the mercy of GM to continue providing support and new features as the vehicle ages, whereas with Android Auto and CarPlay you’d get new features as the apps get updated or as you upgrade your phone across the years.
