When you're spending $80,000 on any car - let alone a Ute - the 2024 Toyota HiLux GR Sport is just not good enough...
Sure, it is the best HiLux ever - but considering the Toyota HiLux has falled really far behind the Ford Ranger, Volkswagen Amarok and even the Isuzu D-Max, it's hard to justify spending so much. Today we're going to objectively review the Toyota HiLux GR Sport, seeing everything it got right - like the upgraded power and torque, to what it still gets wrong, like the old, outdated and low-quality interior. Strap yourselves in! This is going to be a bumpy ride (quite literally).

Except for the fact that they are mounted above the lowest part of the body and clearly have foot steps on them. At best they would offer side only protection, if you were coming into rocks your body, drive shaft and exhaust would contact before these things would.

Price is truly amazingly good compared to a 79 series dual cab, now theres a vehicle that is a total rip off. The new 79 in auto with 2.8L is going close to $95 on road, and its an uncomfortable prehistoric designed vehicle, so this GR is a bargain, comfortable as you say with up-to-date tech, hopefully its not to intrusive. Guys, as you're being picked up on, those are a genuine rock slider side steps. Sidesteps are the first item damaged on a std vehicle that all genuine off roaders have to fork out extra dollars to replace with aftermarket rock sliders. It's a big expensive. Toyota did a great job as they're really well tucked away, but you can still utilise as a step if needed. Awesome work team at Toyota whom designed them. It's unfortunate that as a spare part they'd cost the earth, as they'd be a great replacement on a std lux.

I sold my 2021 SR5 Hilux and purchased the Gr Sport Hilux after a good test drive over a range of rural driving conditions the you drive rough gravel roads or poor potholed bitumen roads it definitely feels superior to the std SR5 power, braking handling and noise insulation. And by the way they are well constructed rock sliders which are tucked up for more off road clearance not crap plastic side steps that fold up off road that every one else persists in selling.

@@ianweal3081except the aftermarket rock sliders can be used as side steps. They simply make it wider. The only reason Toyota made it a half side step was to cut costs. People should wake up and stop defending them for ripping off their customers.

@@tacticalaccountanttobe I'm certainly not defending Toyota, but I am praising whom ever designed these as they're primary design is to be a rock slider, on a vehicle with clear intent to be utilised off road. They don't hang out too far, no excess to hang up on a jagged rock, totally adore them. They can still be utilised to step into the car, irrespective of the hideous attempt displayed here, they're a great practical compromise. Don't like em, get aftermarket ones made and fitted, no different to any other ute you purchase. This vehicle is not a rip off, the new 2.8 auto 79 series, now that's a ripp off.

The sliders are meant for off road performance. I believe you're 100% aware of that although you acted kinda weird. It's not my cup of tea (acting) no offense, however I love Toyota Hilux they're one of the best utes for camping and touring in it's segment better than Nissan Navara warrior edition, Isuzu D-max etc. Cuz, with the right lift and little bit of cutting and grinding the wheel wells you can fit a proper 33 inch tyres. A solid 33s on a Toyota IFS utes and 4wd features like diff lockers, A-track, dowhill decent control, 224 hp with 500 NM torque with Automatic transmission. 2.8 L turbo diesel engine is good enough for me including the interior, cuz it's an off road car not a luxury car. The simplier the dashboard, the cheaper and easier it is to clean and fixed on the trail when you're off the grid 100s of kilometers away from civilisation.

@@tacticalaccountanttobe it's a factory slider not and aftermarket slider. It is better than Jeep Wrangler Rubicon slider off the box. Purchase a based model, the upgrade the halogen lights to led, mode up with off road features like diff lockers, hill decent control, better seat covers etc. After those few nodes which comes with GR sports you'll be already spending the same amount of money. What good off road vehicle didn't come with the price of a luxury car? From the early 90s series LC 80 series to the latest LC 300 series, Jeep Wrangler Rubicon/Rubicon X, Ford Bronco first edition with Sasquatch package, Ford Bronco Raptor, Jeep Gladiator, LC 70 series, 79 series. Toyota 4runner Trd pro, Tacoma Trd pro, Ford Ranger V6. If you're so much concerned about the price why don't you go for 4wd like Isuzu D-max, Nissan Navara, Mazda BT-50 etc. Most of them comes with 2 L to 3.6L engine with inline 4 cylinder 6 speed automatic with 126 to 135 hP. How could you expect a full size 4wd, Automatic transmission, with either V6 Or V8 turbo charged engine with features like A-track system, diff lockers, dowhill decent control, Good healights, front and rear camera, some had 360 camera, big 10 to 15 inch display, leather seats, auto adjustable seats, heated or vantilated seats and steering wheels, couple inch lifted from the factory with performance springs and shocks (aftermarket), push button start etc. to be cheap like your 2 wheels drive crossover or SUV?

@@laloolhouvum1634 All blah blah but nothing change the fact that the Hilux GR is a rip off. The base model Hilux also equipped with rear diff lock, same as the GR. All other features that you've mentioned are not essential when going off road. For the slider, just admit it, the only reason they made it half slider half step was to cut cost which is typical Toyota. Don't embarrass yourself to mention the rivals. I was kind enough to just compare within the models of Hilux. All other rivals in the same class offer much more features with a cheaper price tag. I own a Prado and a Everest. The Everest is a much better car in almost every aspect.

I'll just say this. Reviewers like him and many others may complain about the old body / chassis / interior and every thing else. But 20 years from now, we'll wish we still had trucks like this. We'll miss a proper handbrake, we'll miss a reliable engine. We'll miss a vehicle that we can actually work on ourselves with simple tools and basic mechanical knowledge. We'll miss a functional interior with simple to use AC controls. I've sat and drove in all of the competition and they're all similar. But one thing that is immediately noticeable to me is how much more "open" and "airy" the Hilux feels due to the large windows all around, not just the front.

Yeah nah, I don't think we will 20 years from now. This is complacency from Toyota and idiots will still pay 80k for it. Might as well buy an LC70 if you want uber-basic spec and that is at least an interesting vehicle.

We don't buy them for those things. We buy them because we drive 500km through outback roads at night where if you break down then a nice man called Bradley Murdoch stops to help you like he did with Peter Falconio. The Hilux doesn't break down. The differential doesn't shit itself after 1000km like with Paul Maric's new Ranger. We can't afford for our ute to break down. It must keep going. We don't give a rats asshole about hard plastic. Oh just heard the Dmax comment. You didn't even watch the car expert ute off road test did you. The dmax couldn't get up basic off road hills. The other widely known problem with Ford Australia is the after sale service. You must mention that.

I live in Germany, I had a new full spec LC Prado 150 (2022yr). Now I got the posibility to reserve the new Prado. The new one in full spec has NO KDSS, so I wonder , how Toyota is fck us! The old (2022yr) had so many disadvantges, but I am affraid the new one will be even worse for a lot more money. I am not a guy , who wants a high tech, but just to be simple & to serve the purpose, but thats a lot to ask from Toyota. When buying a car from Toyota , you have to taer it down and replace a lot of parts . I will not get into talking about 70 series! I just hope that someone in near future will realace smthg similiar to send Toyota in history.

Just imagine in 2024 you buy this car for let say 10years but already in 1st year you have an old car where on the camera you can only recognize diferent between grass and asphalt…BRING THE NEW INTERIER NOW!

I couldn’t bring myself to buy the first new model of anything, even a Hilux. This last version is probably a reliability winner even if it’s dated as f* inside. It does everything I want it to and when I factor in the power upgrade, suspension and rock sliders it’s not terrible value. Plus I want to do my own thing when it comes to the tub.

Most of us dont use the steps to get in, seriously its a slider, more clearance and protection 😊 there isnt much to be critical about when all you have is incandescent light globes and the oh so heavy tailgate. The Ranger you suggest at the end would be great until the engine needs replacing if you can put up with the stupid large screen and the D Max, well extremely noisy and no power. Hilux a win for my money.
