THE 2024 WHITNEY BIENNIAL: EVEN BETTER THAN THE REAL THING

James Kalm has been posting KZfaq video reviews on the Whitney Biennial since before it was allowed. One of his fondest memories was of being detained by security, and escorted out of the Museum’s 2008 edition of the show. His infraction was the attempted video reportage of the event. Since then, as with so many other things, the art world institutions have begun to see that there is a “cultural value” to individual’s documentation. “Even Better Than the Real Thing” is the eighty first-edition and features the works of seventy-one artists and collectives. The 2024 Whitney Biennial is organized by Chrissie Iles, Anne and Joel Ehrenkranz Curator and Meg Onli, Curator at Large, with Min Sun Jeon and Beatriz Cifuentes. It features works by: Eddie Rodolfo Aparicio, Dora Budor, Seba Calfuqueo, Demian DinéYazhi’, Torkwase Dyson, JJJJJerome, Jes Fan, Nikita Gale, ektor Garcia, Pippa Garner, Harmony Hammond, Sharon Hayes, Holly Herndon, Mat Dryhurst, Madeleine Hunt-Ehrlich, Takako Yamaguchi et al.
A musical introduction is provided by Ulysses. This program was recorded March 13, 2024. #jameskalmreport #jameskalmroughcut #lorenmunk

It is clear that nothing pertains anymore.We’ve entered an era of zombie art….it’s dead before it’s even made. The only way through this malaise of sterility , is for Narcissus to fall into the pond and drown in his/her psychic slime.

There was an article in last Friday's Times. Three critics looked at the Biennal. Big articles in the Arts section. Their views concur with yours. Still, if I was in New York right now I'd go. I want to go to New York right now.

It is not about art, it's about social gatherings and chatting & selfie$, and bringing art to West village. All that concept visuals will matter not in the next flowering spring.

Thanks for your efforts James and Kate for reporting and all your uploads. They're tons of fun. Sadly this exhibit is worse than the real thing. Amazing that this is the best the curators could come up with. Your analogy of viewing through a porthole is apt.

Thanks for sharing/posting this exhibit walk around. 90% were crafty, clever, gimmicky pieces. Not surprising since actual fine art, and especially representational art, is 'hard'. Being clever and gimmicky, not so much. The majority of those pseudo "artists" had to go home and face an imposter in the mirror when they brushed their teeth before bed that night. Good thing there is a huge reservoir of likewise pseudo art officianados wanting to be/appear hip and chic willing to lay out large sums for this minimal talent crap.

I had the chestnut "the show everyone loves to hate" kind of lingering in the back of my throat the whole video (do I dare say it?). But, you yourself said it, so my hesitancy was unwarranted! Big ups to Maja Ruznic who's painting was lovely and endearing. I found myself huddling for warmth during every spot which featured painting, regardless of how much merit or innovation the paintings presented. I took heart at your suggesting a kind of spiritual art at 23:19 . James, (re: 29:00) we love your authenticity and handheld videos - wouldn't change a darn thing about it! Gimbal, schmimbal. And I loved your disclaimer about the "...snapshot, through a porthole, of a boat, in a canal, at dusk." Much thanks for your time and fortitude to bring this to us. Thanks also to Kate!

These Biennial shows are just becoming a parody of themselves. Makes you wonder what the criteria is for making the list. I know contemporary art has eschewed aesthetics and beauty for a long time, but boy it sure does make one hanker for those days gone bye.

100% agree. A few interesting geometric pieces. I don’t think this is relevant art, it’s an ode to the death of postmodernism.

Honestly, aside from the crowd (its great to see so many people engaged even if I too dislike crowds), I was shockingly surprised to be introduced to Mavis Pusey for the first time. It's funny how an artist who is right under the belly of the beast could be overlooked until after her death in 2019. Amazing work. You also showcased a few other amazing looking pieces: Isaac Julien (who I think has been in the WB before) and a few quite striking painterly works, and the huge amber piece, woah. It is, as you said, a 'snapshot'. I've been an artist who has 'emerged' too many times to count - working in New England, then in the Pacific NW (where I was included in their version of the biennial at the TAM), and now in Texas - as an independent you are often overlooked - that's not to say that your 'time' could be before, during or after.....when I was in Portland two of my studio floormates were included in the Whitney Biennial, the year after I moved out of my studio, the woman who took over my space was then included in the very next rendition! I feel as though I'm being followed and eventually they will catch up to me! They need to send their curators to places like Fort Worth and not just the same old suspected spots. Here's to 2026!

So when you can’t tell the difference between a middling graduate show and a Biennial (welp, aside from the scale and budget involved) is it fair to say that the quote Art world unquote might have lost its way at some point? Or am I missing something important about these seemingly facile attempts to maintain the myth of an avant-garde in an age where (when) it almost completely exists in a mutually masturbatory symbiosis with the institutions in purports to critically interrogate? (And) Is that a rhetorical question???? 😂. Edits in brackets
@jameswelsh7789
@jameswelsh7789 3 ай бұрын
Agreed somewhat!😅 Much of the work assumes a facile relationship to the means of its presentation, deftly packaging content in the experimental and disruptive methods of modern and postmodern invention and reduced to a stylistic presentation of (usually) equally rehashed content. In one case a video work is literally funded by the Chinese government to alert us to the atrocities visited on China by Imperial Japan during WW2… so you hear it? tik - tok Amazing that young avant grade artists making cultural critiques in the US are so alienated from the mediums of social discourse (Internet, AI) and the challenging themes the US faces as a Democracy. (Voter enfranchisement)

The premise of most of this art is that being in a gallery or museum makes it art. The makers were thinking this when they made their pieces.
