A discussion of the world's second published roleplaying game after Dungeons & Dragons: Empire of the Petal Throne. There is some controversy over whether this is truly the second RPG, and I discuss that, along with the marred history of its creator.

One important thing to note about Tekumel: it popularised the idea of the Critical Hit doing increased damage.

There were at least four playable alien races in this exotic game. The alignment system was between stability and change. Iron is rare and horses do not exist. The novels are quite good.

@@daddyrolleda1 If you can still stomach the IP at this point and you're interested in miniatures, Howard Fielding's Tekumel Project up in Canada is making a wide range of vastly superior modern sculpts for Tekumel gaming these days. It's very much a small fan project and new releases have been slow over the last few years, but they've been reliable for me in past orders and the casting quality is very good. AFAIK none of his profits are going to the Tekumel Foundation (who undeniably helped cover up for Barker for years, possibly decades) or any of the frankly disgusting causes Barker himself supported, so at least purchases won't fuel any of that. If you do decide to buy from Howard, I'd recommend looking into one of his "Tekumel Club" memberships. The discounts can be considerable, although you have to weigh the base membership cost versus planned purchases to decide if it's worth it for you or not.

On M.A.R. Barker's wikipage, it actually says that this game was self-published in '74 based upon the D&D ruleset. So, this would, in fact, make it the second RPG published. "Having watched the Dungeons & Dragons games started by Mike Mornard, one of the original testers for D&D, when he moved to Minneapolis from Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, Barker resolved to create his own ruleset based on his own created world and the game mechanics from D&D. After six weeks, this was self-published in August 1974 as Empire of the Petal Throne and play commenced forthwith, including such occasional members as Dave Arneson - who singled out Barker and Tékumel as being his favorite Dungeon Master and roleplaying game, respectively - from early days.[23][24]" Self-published is published, so....

Thanks for watching and commenting! Yes, I had seen that as well, and you're correct that "self-published" means "published." Makes sense. I was thinking about it more in the sense of being "professionally" published, but I didn't state that in my video. Thanks for adding this bit to the conversation, as it does lend further ammunition to the game being the second-published RPG!

@@daddyrolleda1 I think it's important to remember that nearly everything in the RPG space in the '70s was "self-published". Gygax published D&D through his own company, which was created to publish his own stuff (originally wargames, of course). Similarly, En Garde was written by GDW folks and published ("self-published" in the same sense) by GDW. When you're in a garage industry, self-publishing is the norm. Frankly, the "typesetting" (and "editing" and "art") of OD&D is very typical of the worst sort of self-published mss. Much the same can be said of Tunnels and Trolls, for that matter. I haven't seen any of the versions of EPT before TSR published it, but I suspect it was no less professional than OD&D (a low bar).

The rules also had the first "Task Difficulty" system. The Likelihood of Spell Success Table was expressly used also with skills. This is the soul of the entire system and sets it apart from D&D. It's buried on pages 18/19 I believe. I've written a 2nd Edition of the game which brings the LoSS Table to the forefront, if you're interested.

The earliest newspaper reference I could find to Empire of the Petal Throne, was from the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, 31 Aug 1975, in an article on Gen Con VIII entitled "From Hussars to Hippogriffs," with the following excerpt: "Tactical Studies Rules has just published one of the most ambitious war games ever. It's called Empire of the Petal Throne, costs $25 and is the brainchild of M. A. R. Barker, an anthropologist and linguist who heads the department of South Asian studies at the University of Minnesota. Barker's game involves a mythical medieval kingdom, somewhat Persian in character, that he has created complete with a history, finely detailed maps and even its own language and alphabet, just as Tolkien did for the "Lord of the Rings" cycle. And Barker has 20,000 to 30,000 words in manuscript form, Gygax said, of what long may eventually be a three-volume fantasy on the Petal Throne story."

I do think there is something to Tekumel still that makes it exciting to play in, and Barker's beliefs need not alienate you from them. After learning about it it's pretty easy to see the Empire of the Petal Throne is a fascist imperial ethno-state: a nazi dream. So with that in mind you need to ask, are these the people we (as players) want to help? The answer, is probably no. So why not play rebels, people opposing the petal throne, instead of people trying to maintain it, or outsiders seeking to join (as was the assumed impetus in the original game). Nazis should have anything, anything they claim should be taken from them. If the idea of tearing down the Petal Throne and killing the emperor would make Barker turn over in his grave I'd happily run a game where you do it!
@richmcgee434

It was an appalling revelation when the news broke, especially for folks (including myself) who'd grown up alongside Tekumel and been deeply invested in the setting. For me it was made much worse as it became apparent that most or all of Barker's inner circle (including the Tekumel Foundation board) had been aware of his ugly proclivities for years, possibly decades, and kept it from the greater gaming community. We likely wouldn't know even now if there hadn't been some kind of falling out and one member of the group broke the news to the world. Barker is dead and can do very little more harm to the world aside from whatever lingering impact his Nazi wet-dream of a novel has. The people who covered up for him are still out there, and haven't so much as issued an explanation for their actions.

There is a lot that Jeff Berry could easily add to what you described but I think you did a very good job on describing the game. A little history is MAR Barker as a professor at the University Minnesota had been working on his little story since his childhood. He bumped into a group playing dungeons and dragons that Dave Arneson had been doing at the University of Minnesota at Coughman hall. he ran into one player that had the prototype rules and was running with them. Asked where they got the rules and what the whole thing was about after watching it for a little bit. He was directed to Dave Arneson who happened to be there. Dave handed him the manuscript he had at the time, he is working title was here there be dragons. He had different titles that they were all debating for the game. At one point they simply called it the fantasy game. MAR Barker had apparently within 24 hours gone through the rules and started writing his own set of rules based upon those rules with some major changes. and yes, his world was more science-fiction. It just had the feel of fantasy. Just as I would say Star Wars is a fantasy world and not a science-fiction world. Mostly because they don’t go over the science and yeah… but there was also star probe and star empires which came out shortly during the time Blackmoor was still being played he produced the game with his own production company and printing company. There’s a lot more I can say about what he did. both Dave and Gary thought this was the game they wish they had come up with at various points. they really loved the world building. One aspect of the game as they played it especially as Jeff Berry explained it to me was the mentorship that was done with new players at the beginning of the game. You basically weren’t allowed to run around until you got to a certain level of ability. It was also a metal short world. there is a famous game where Dave Arneson was playing in the game run by MAR Barker there was of course the game star empires and star probe, plus there was a third installment planned that was the classical science-fiction game that was to be the first labeled science-fiction that got published. That started being played before Dungeons & Dragons got published. And TSR did eventually publish those rules as well Anyway I have walked far afield from your topic.

No worries at all - this was fascinating to read. You've got way more first hand knowledge than I do, obviously. I'm just a fan who loves reading and learning about the history of how these things came together, and who wants to share what I've learned to make sure the knowledge doesn't go away, especially since the vast majority of folks playing D&D these days only started with the current edition and don't have the history (and most likely don't care, as most people wouldn't necessarily be interested in knowing, for example, who created Monopoly and why - they just want to play the game). But I found a little niche here and I enjoy doing what research I can to share this information with people who are interested. Thanks again for your comments. I do appreciate you said I did a good job describing the game. That's a very nice compliment.

And, I also got attacked from people who told me to "leave politics out" of my videos and just talk about games, as though pointing out that I don't agree with the creator's Nazi ideology was somehow bad for me to bring up. It's like I couldn't win! But most folks, yourself included, take a rational approach which I really appreciate. This is an important part of RPG history and I felt it worthy of discussion. Ha! I'd be honored if he stopped by my little channel to comment! I've had several game design luminaries from back in the day say that T&T was the second RPG. It's just really hard to quantify as nobody kept really good records back then. EPT was created as a game system as early as 1974 after chats between MAR Barker and Arneson, so it's almost concurrent with D&D from that sense, but the "official" published version wasn't until 1975. Timing-wise between the official publication and release of EPT and T&T, we're talking a different of, I think, a few weeks or a month at most, so it's possible T&T hit shelves first.

Howard wasn't racist. Although his work was a product of its time. Howard's work is similar to Barker's Tekemiel in that they're both fundamentally based on real-life history and mythology.

@@Shagamaw-100 Well, Barker turned out to be a pro-Nazi holocaust denier so, maybe not the best comparison to use when trying to vindicate something as merely being "of its time"... just sayin'.

I have a more modern printing of this... without the box. I always sought a copy of the box, but they are very hard to find... at least for a good price. Yeah, it is a shame that M.A.R. Barker ended up basically being a Nazi. Oof!

It was definitely a shock to the community, especially to some folks who were around in the early days of the hobby and knew/corresponded with him, only to find out he had this dark side. It's definitely colored peoples' view of the setting, with good reason. *Before* all that happened, the game was one of my "holy grail" items that I'd searched from forever. Any time my parents went on vacation when I was a kid, I'd always beg to find a hobby/game store where I could look through old RPG stuff hoping to find EPT, Metamorphosis Alpha, and Dragon #63 (with the Barbarian class). Alas, all three items eluded me until I discovered Ebay in the late 90's and early 2000's, which is where I got this copy of EPT as you saw in the video! Thanks again for watching and commenting!

@@daddyrolleda1 Oh yes... Ebay certainly changed the game! lol I talk about that all the time... even with comic book collecting. I remember having a list in my pocket and would go around to any new comic shop around, or one in an area I was visiting... or when a little comic show would pop up. Sometimes they would even have old RPG books too! :-) Ah... there was something fun about that "hunt"... despite the frustrations lol

@@KabukiKid Oh my goodness, yes with regard to comic books! I remember when the first Punisher mini-series came out. I got the first two issues, but couldn't find #3. I got #4 and #5 but still couldn't find #3. I recall one day after school my mom drove us around in the snow and we must have visited every 7-11, drug store, and grocery store in a 5 mile radius looking for it! Still never found it, but it was nice of her to do that. I finally found it more than a decade later, but as you said, part of the fun was the hunt. I recall the same thing with trying to track down certain Star Wars figures.

I will admit I was not expecting the revelation of his ideals and associations. Yet I can't help but point out wotc being a hypocrite with a lot of its far left leaning ideals, especially towards straight white males. You can deny it, but there is a reason their numbers and sales have been dwindling, and the proof is there for anyone to see. Same with Evil Hat productions who don't hesitate to bash Lovecraft for having xenophobic ideas, when it was clear he was mentally disturbed to begin with, just to turn around and make profit off his universe. I dont condone hatred or the beliefs, I am just here for the games and history, and I would like it if both the haters and woke crowds keep the politics out of my entertainment.

Thank you! I first heard of the game from reading articles in Dragon Magazine and it was always on my list to look for, but I never set it at any store we visited. Finally once Ebay became a thing, I tracked this copy down. There's a lot of great world-building stuff in it, but from a mechanics standpoint, it's pretty lacking.

I really appreciate you watching and commenting. And yes, the Neo-Nazi novel he wrote was already bad enough, but then to find he worked for a magazine that promoted Holocaust Denial... it sullies the whole setting for me. It's a really intriguing setting with so much detail and history, and maybe the fans and the Tékumel Foundation can try to "save" it.

Funny enough the backstory is about the extinction of the White Race (nobody bating an eye on that blatant display of racism, and forget not Prof Barker was a mixed offspring from a middle easterner father and white mother) allowing the non-whites to finally evolve XD Anyways, his approach to the problems with alien proteins and careless gardening and "zooing" is very interesting. By the way, some words on the revised reedition of the game? It's very different from the 1975 edition.

EPT was not regarded as an RPG. Everyone, at least everyone who played RPGs in New Haven in the 70s, thought that it was a setting for D & D. That was true of Arduin also.
@daddyrolleda1
@daddyrolleda1 Жыл бұрын
Yes, I think that's how many people thought of it and used it, but it was *marketed* as a separate game, not as a campaign setting for D&D. It has its own rules systems, some of which are different from D&D, including ability scores, etc., that make it slightly different that way.

People change over time. The Professor might have developed his leanings after he wrote this. I like to think so. But, it is just a thought. I like to see the positive, when I can. I just remember the tag line for this product. "No Elves." They were kinda ubiquetous back in the day. So maybe he was anti-Arvendor as well? Sorry. Bad joke. Good video!

The tagline “No Elves” was actually for a similarly time-lost game, Talislanta. It’s possible this game was also marketed with that tagline, but I’ve not seen it personally. Though Talislanta is famous for that saying, as their tagline to their day is “STILL No Elves.”

Yeah Shock Horror! A Muslim doesn't like Jews. He was just like 95%+ of the islamic world so his beliefs are not "out there" when you think what his core belief system is. There is a reason Mein Kampf is still published and is a good seller in the Islamic world. That being said, I love Tekumel. Been playing there since the 70s. I can sepeaate the art and the artist.

Not sure if you made it all the way through the video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/isuAqNCrqsuZc4E.html I do not want to give credence to Barker's beliefs, as I vehemently disagree with them, and don't want this to turn into a platform for misguided people who do agree with him to start taking over the comments on this video. I'm not celebrating him or his creation, but rather talking about it as an artifact in the history of early TTRPG development.
