In this video, I discuss the 3 levels of understanding Bitcoin.
Level 1 is the NGU (number go up) level, in which one is mostly preoccupied with Bitcoin's price appreciation measured against some dying fiat currency. Most altcoiners are permanently stuck at Level 1.
Level 2 understands Bitcoin as freedom money, as the first digital non-sovereign currency that cannot be censored, confiscated, or inflated away by central bankers and politicians. Bitcoin extends the private property protections of the US Constitution globally to people of all races from all countries.
Level 3 seeks to understand Bitcoin at the metaphysical or transcendental level. At this level, Bitcoin can be viewed as an autonomous system or alien life-form that is slowly enlisting followers and spreading across the globe. This level also understands that Bitcoin is rapidly becoming a universal system of measuring value, akin to seconds (time), meters (space), and grams (mass).
Bitcoin also teaches us the ugliness of fiat food, fiat art, and fiat culture in general-- and shows humanity the way forward. Ironically, this path forward is somewhat like a return to the beauty of a world on the gold standard. Bitcoin, like gold, teaches us the values of patience and low time preference thinking.

Just so you know, I will never refer you to "my personal trader" or try to connect with you personally to sell you something. I am trying to ban these scammers as quickly as they pop up. When it comes to level 3 I like to think about it like this. When the internet was first put in schools and homes people said they understood it and could use it, but they could have never understood or predicted the smart phone and how it would change the world. What happens in 15 years will be pretty impressive.

The scary thing is Bitcoin has barely begun. When sats measure value, that includes not just the present - but all future value of human production. When you own a piece of Bitcoin you literally own the future.

That was a very thought provoking Sunday sermon. It’s in line with my feelings in this space. Thank you for articulating it so well. I’m trying to spread the word and finding it is getting easier to get others to listen but finding it difficult to make them really understand.

Agree with you. I am just trying to lead by example as it can be exhausting to "make" people understand. I think a solid understanding is only gained when something inside you resonates with it (and you make the effort to understand it yourself); probably like we both did 🙂.

Haha, Sunday sermon, clever touch with the fancy churches. Was Satoshi an ET? Cold Fusion channel did a deep dive into the human identity of Satoshi, examining all the likely subjects concluding with no conclusion since every promising possibility ended with contradictory evidence. The ET hypothesis is the best one so far., maybe they want to help us not destroy ourselves and likely would have no use for sats

@@xqt39a if the ET/Satoshi had 1 million Bitcoin, in time would be wealthy enough to take control back from the corrupt powers that be. If that were the plan, let’s hope it’s not too late.

Bitcoin moves with nature, politics, corruption, and technology on its own merit. Therefore we can use Bitcoin as a primary measuring point for all these things. The dollar doesn’t measure Bitcoin. Bitcoin measures the dollar.

Matthew, I'm continually thankful for your videos. Truly impressed and inspired by your structure (something I would like to model). "Low time" concept truly resonated with me. Thinking about what I'm doing now or working on that carries 50, 100 or 500 years into the future. I live next to a building that is a perfect example of "high time" fiat architecture. It serves as an example of what NOT to work towards or build. Thank you for your work and insight. It has been extremely helpful for the future for my family. God bless you and your family.

Yes, fiat-culture !! You placed all the words on thoughts I had over the past few months. I also started to think whether the high-paced economy we live in was the product of the economic policies we live under. I mean of course economic activities are influenced by economic policies, but I was getting very interested in its accelerating-short-lived pace, throwing billions on unicorns that don't last, building more and more homes despite no matching demand, calling startups under debt with no revenue "successful", the ETF bubble that keeps growing creating an increasing gap between stock valuation and actual companies revenue, etc... Keynes was all about "avoiding the economy engine stalling", by keeping inflation "healthy" so it forces people to not stash money and instead spend or invest it. Doesn't sound too bad on paper. But the result is that we are trying to produce value out of despair seeing our money melting, rather than identifying true opportunity/cost. Peoples throw their savings in ETFs because NGO, wealthy people fund bonkers startups left and right, hoping to encounter the next Google or Facebook. We're not investing intelligently to see civilization growth and innovation, we're all trying to avoid having our money melting under the printer. Playing the long game by keeping my money on the side should be a valid investment move. We now live in a culture that want you to spend that money as much as possible (gotta keep the engine running !), or it you're slightly more intelligent, invest it "somewhere", at this point anywhere is better than cash, making it hard to know where to bring value. Hopefully Bitcoin can help us identifying how to bring actual value to society.

I would suggest that there is a level between 2 and 3 where you gain an understanding of how the lightning network is going to completely change the way people transact on the internet. Not only will it tranform value exchange, but it looks like an entirely new decentralized internet can be built on top of lightning that will permit private peer to peer communication between devices at the protocol level. Imagine being able to do everything you currently do on the internet, but being able to do it privately outside the ability of any state or centralized organization to shut you down.

I don't agree with this completely, cryptography has been around for a very long time, i'm learning the technical of bitcoin now, so i may be wrong, but none of the tech that comprises the core of bit coin is new, the way they are implemented to create bitcoin is the real innovation. Michael saylor brought up a great example in the printing press, the chinese had the technology long before it changed the european political, and spiritual landscape. It just so happened that the printing press wasn't compatible with the chinese language, as it was with the english alphabet, so the tech isn't where the magic is, the implementation is.

I would like to leave level one behind for good. I rarely check the fiat price anymore. By comparison I used to check it 1000 times a day. My Lambo was a 70' sailboat. Fortunately I've grown, traded all my shitcoin bags for BTC. Unfortunately I'm getting on to retirement age so I have no real choice but to still want it to "moon" (ha I haven't even said moon in some time.) I'm a believer that Bitcoin will completely change the world by 2045. Things this big and this important don't happen in 20 years. My goal is to retire very comfortably and leave enough BTC for my two daughters and my partner. And fortunately I have a job that they will probably have to carry my dead body from. I simply want to last long enough to hear people say. Damn man! You were right about Bitcoin all this time.

Interestingly, the comparison with the religious aspect seems to fit overall the best in my view. One begins as a seeker. Once the veil is torn away, you can NEVER go back. Everyday seems a test of my resolve as I gain more maturity. God help us all!

This is a really interesting summary Matthew. I started at level 2 in 2011, listening to Max and Stacy telling us to buy bitcoin at $3! Then went to level 1 and for the last 3 years I’ve been exploring Level 3. There is so much more to understand here. Level 1 conclusions about bitcoin also include the conspiracy theorists who dismiss it after an hour or two of research. They seem remarkably shallow to me.

Either this is level 3, or level 4, but the 4 rules or constraints that Bitcoin (PoW) is based upon (difficulty / challenge + verifiability / truth + universality / diversity + independence / responsibility) are the same rules as all value systems, institutions, games, and human pursuits. To the extent that systems follow these rules, such as democracy, they are meta stable, assuming absolute stability or perfection is impossible, rather like the speed of like is only approachable, as a limit. The opposite of meta stable is entropic, so constructing a robust system of social epistemology is a negentropic action.

A fascinating and profound video. I have suggested, only half in jest, that maybe Satoshi is a time-traveller from the future, where he is currently waiting for his creation to catch up with him! Bitcoin is indeed weird and other-worldly, because it is so damn clever. More to the point, it seems to have built-in safeguards against every foreseeable - and un-foreseeable - issue that may arise. Bitcoin is the exception to the aphorism that "If it seems too good to be true, it probably is".

Won't the 1mb block size cause any problems in the future? Knowing changing it requires a hard fork won't that prevent it from happening or if that happens, won't it destroy bitcoin's integrity? Or we have to keep it the way it is and expand it with second layers and side chains? What's your opinion? Ethereum or any coin could become a bitcoin sidechain by writing check points in bitcoin blocks. It will become more secure. It will be weird if 100 years from now bitcoin's block size is still 1mb but that's the price for immutability.

Hi Matt Could you make video on Bitcoin and interest rates? From what I read so far interest rates will put Bitcoin into bear market as it is correlated to stocks and it will be risk off environment, while other argue that higher rates may be actually good for Bitcoin and decouple it from stocks, as it is still in early stage (is it though?) and will raise further

Hey Matt, the more I study Bitcoin, the more I’m getting to think it came to us from outside of this world. Good to know that the idea has come through someone else’s mind too 😅

Have you seen the movie "Moonfall" yet Matthew? This was a very fascinating movie, speaking of alien tech, energy usage and AI. Great on the big screen! 😄

Today was the ultimate festival of fiat culture, the Super Bowl. Great video again Matthew, very deep. Could you at some point (if you have distinct thoughts on it, find it interesting, and have the time) do a video on your thoughts on Michael Saylor’s claim that BTC is digital energy? This narrative is very intriguing to me, in that I think one can actually successfully argue in favor OR against BTC being digital energy from either a physics or economics perspective. I personally think BTC fundamentally represents the value of all *untapped* energy or unusable energy in existence, which human beings can harbor, as the opportunity cost of using this energy to secure the BTC network is near zero and BTC can hold this value across both time and Euclidean space. It definitely is a bit metaphysical and fascinating to think about. Thanks again for your great, near daily, content!

By the way, instead of saying untapped or unusable energy it may have been better for me to simply phrase it as excess energy (energy in the power grid which can’t be utilized or easily used by consumers). This would an imply a roughly $50 Trillion BTC market capitalization based on my calculations.

I'm at level 2 but I still like to check the price. What's keeping me from level 3 is all the fud and the lack of people recognizing the need for crypto. Do you really think Ethereum and Solana and the top alt coins are going away? Although I view Bitcoin as the king of crypto and always will be, I see these top alt coins sticking around for a long time because they have a use case. Institutions are also investing in Ethereum. Great vid.

Scam coins like solana and ethereum depend on centralised management and venture capitalists to remain relevant. If Vitalik Buterin wanted to dump his ETH (he already has sold) then ethereum is going to 0. Or if the eth foundation decided to raise the supply of eth then everyone already holding is getting debased. Solana is already being dumped by VCs like Chamath and Sacks and laugh about it (there’s a video on this channel about this) so retail is left holding the bag. Bitcoin has no central authority, it does not depend on anyone or anything to keep creating a new block every 10 mins. The supply of bitcoin will always be 21 million nothing more nothing less. It cannot be stopped or changed. It cannot be hacked or taken offline and you can be guaranteed that the monetary supply will never change. In fact we already know that the last Bitcoin will be mined in 2140. Bitcoin didn’t rely on investments to get to $1 trillion market cap it grew organically with nobody or nothing controlling it. So to answer your question, do I think eth and Solana will be around? Yes for a few years. But 20 years? 50 years? 100 years? Hell no. But the ONLY thing I am absolutely certain will be around for the rest of humanity’s existence is Bitcoin. You cannot compare alts to bitcoin it is a different animal.
