Speaking of can openers...I bought one of those battery operated ones you set on the can and then just push the button. The thing works flawlessly. Opens any can large or small. Works on corned beef style cans as well. I was so impressed I bought a second one. Great for arthritis cases, leaves no sharp edges. Kind of fun to watch, it's like a little robot that dances around the can and even shuts itself off. I got the Boajf Electric Can Opener model at WallyWorld.

I have a rim cutter. It takes off the top, leaves no sharp ridge and with a hammer i can pop the top back on.

I use manual can openers. I do have some basic metal can openers from retail camping sellers. In recent years, I've stocked up on manual tools such as a drill and other cutting tools.

Wow I never saw this method w the spoon before. When I was younger I used a knife. Neither way would be good now cuz lack of strength in my hand. But I keep manual can openers. The old fashioned beer bottle openers work too but I havrnt seen them for sale in a long time. Great ideas from you. 😊

Another good video I have carried a P 38 on my key chain for years and keep them in my go bag I think you need as many tools in your bag as you can get you never know what will happen or when it will happen and gloves are a must thanks

Why would you carry that? The P 38 Lightning is an American single-seat, twin piston-engine fighter aircraft that was used during World War II. Sorry but I had to go there...🤣

I have a handful of P38’s around. Along with a couple of old steel strikers for sparks. I have had them since the 50’s when I was a kid and went out camping in the woods. They’re in my glove box in my truck. I live in CO so I keep a survival bag of several things in case you get stuck in a snow storm. The mtns are real. City people laugh, till they close the freeways and they run out of gas sitting all night.

Love the glove advice. I'm big on wearing gloves. Cutting your hand open is ALWAYS a bad thing. (lol) Especially in a survival situation. ALSO: Watch out for metal slivers than might go into the food.

Ive used alot of these methods still love using a large bowie style blade for fun! The tip clips on the inside lip and you can push down safely to open it slowly! Never tried your method with a knife looks a bit more dangerous but still works!

The best method I've found to open a can if you don't have an opener is to use a corkscrew's "mini blade". It's blunt so you don't need any protective gear and it's super easy to open the can with it thanks to it's grooved blade!

You forgot the fourth method of opening the can...it also needs a rock, but just a little smaller than the lapping one. Pick up the rock and smash repeatedly on the top of the can. 😉 Good video. ✔️

Best thing to do would be to carry a can opener in your EDC which sounds crazy, but I have a couple of those tiny military ones, as well as one on my multitool. But there’s always the possibility that you find yourself without your equipment.

@@PracticalPreparedness Funny story: I had accidentally locked myself out of my house while out shopping, called a locksmith, and used a keypad to get into the garage. I'm a woodworker, and got a bottle of wine out of the car. Used a drill with a large bit as a corkscrew and opened it, used a coffee mug I keep in the "shop" and was a happy girl when the locksmith arrived. lol

Just to add a fix blade would be better option over a folder and a real one can opener would be better over that. :)

Or, if you don't have a spoon, knife or any other tools, you can just grind the top/bottom of the can on a flat surface, preferably concrete or rock. Grind it for long enough and the pressed metal of the lid will wear away and the lid should pop right off.

My grandfather always used his knife to open cans, whenever we went fishing and camping when I was a kid. No gloves, no can openers, and no injuries. Society today is soft AF.

Any injury in an emergency situation could lead to infection. Something to keep in mind

@@PracticalPreparedness I’m not advocating for it. Just stating a fact. Also, practice is integral for surviving an emergency situation. That’s why people start fires with a bowdrill, etc. even when a lighter is at hand. So technically, even with a crappy set of gloves and no practice you’re way more likely to injure yourself than somebody like my grandfather, who used to open cans with a knife casually.

There's something called a p-38 which is a portable very small can opener that the military used to use or maybe they still do I don't know. I keep one of those in a bug out bag

Always carry a military style P-38 or P-51 can opener on my key chain, so have never needed to use any of the 3 methods you demonstrated.. The knife & or spoon seem the most effective , but see a mess as the can begins to leak because of the method used.

can opener not something you think of grabbing in an emergency if you have little time to leave your house. Besides, I have gone through so many new ones, they make them like garbage now. i bought a couple vintage ones off ebay, they work great with a little sharpening. one is all metal with a little knife thing on the end, there's a cutout in the metal that rides along the can lid. don't need gloves. i will likely try to find and buy another as backup. the heck with these expensive modern junk ones. I also got one as a gift that uses 2 aaa batteries, rides on top of the can lid and takes takes the top and bit of the can off.i love it but just in case i don't have batteries, the real old ones are the way to go. They will probably outlive us all.

*YOU MISSED THE EASIEST ONE. The lid is glued on. If you take a lighter to the rim or the top of the can, it will melt off very quickly to a point where you can just separate it from the bottom.*

This tip is off the subject, you can prolong the life of your can opener by cleaning it with a little cooking oil instead of soap and water to prevent rust.
