March 13, 2016 was a special day for Queens Comfort. On this day the Astoria, Queens restaurant celebrated it's 5th year anniversary. And so, being the resident DJ of my favorite neighborhood comfort food spot, I asked some friends, wait, BROTHERS of mine to come through and help mark this joyous occasion. Specifically #thebeatnuts, Psycho Les and Juju (*look for video of the nuts throughout the week) and the one and only Reco Price aka #MCSupernatural.
I first discovered Supernatural at the 1993 New Music Seminar MC Battle for World Supremacy. Truth is, it was actually the Superman Battle hosted by Clark Kent. I just miss saying "New Music Seminar", but I digress...
See, those of you who weren't around in the 80s / 90s era of NMS competitions may not know those DJ battles were actually coupled with MC contests. Legends like Grand Master Melle Mel, Grand Master Caz, Mikey D and King Sun would go at it like their lives depended on it. That's how much pride MCs had in the name and reputations they devoted their careers to building. The last MC battle at the NMS took place in 1993 and Supernatural won it by toppling #MadSkillz, another beast of an MC.
I remember the entire battle like it happened yesterday. Those of us in attendance were awe struck at Supernat's ability to not only make words rhyme but do it on the spot or should I say, off the cuff. It seriously felt to me as if I was witnessing God's grace reincarnated through a human who shits, eats and sleeps just like me. I invoke God here because I firmly believe there has to be more to Supernatural's ability. God, Source, The Universe, whatever you want to call Him, Her or It blessed Reco Price with an uncanny ability to Freestyle since the day he was born and since then, my dude Supernat has continued to refine that skill into what you hear in these 16 and some odd minutes of video.
I am so grateful to know you Reco and I appreciate you sharing your blessings with the good folk at Queens Comfort this afternoon.
