Dr Harnet, it is great to see you up and delivering again. Keep healing and getting stronger. This is such a poignant video. These three reasons are all real. I have experienced them as have many people that I know. A lot of people also do not realise what the costs of things can be. The people who I know that have done very well in West Africa, were people with LOTS of money, family members and a good network to return to. Whilst you can do well without those, I have not seen it on a large scale.

In Western countries, there is a safety net provided by the State that in Africa is not existing. This safety net supports people to keep buying the essentials and paying the rent even when the economy is performing poorly (e.g. recession, inflation, high unemployment, etc.). Africa is becoming more and more expensive and less visible for small entrepreneurs. If you want to start a small business in any safe and business-friendly country in the African continent, you need almost the same amount of money that you need in a Western country. Furthermore, potential buyers in Africa struggle today to afford life and this has a massive impact on the survival of small businesses in the black continent as they sell less.

This is the Africa all of us Africans survive in. This is the Africa our countries can afford. The government is not there to give money to a peasant farmer when his crops die due to a drought, or a fisherman when his canoe is cut in half by a crocodile. The business costs you incur are the same as those a local incurs. If you cannot deal with them, you go somewhere else or stay where you are.

Thank you for sharing this information. Your video actually proves a point I recently made in a group forum - Africa is foreign to Black and Brown Americans. We don't know the language, their culture, or the people no more than we do people in many other countries. The fact that you highlighted "loneliness" as one of the reasons "Diaspora" leave Africa should tell us that we are not the same, if we were, we would easily fit in and feel at home. I know several people who moved to various African countries and have all returned to the US or relocated to another country with better infrastructure and where people aren't begging or poor-mouthing. I also know several wealthy Africans in America and they all say they do not plan to return to Africa to live until they are older. I think Africa is a great place to visit. I tell people to "Go where they are treated best." - Andrew Henderson. Instead of relocating to a place because you have the same skin color as the natives because it does not mean we are the same.

The 3 top reasons the Diaspora who impulsively moved to Africa are leaving Africa: 1. Lofty goals met with harsh realities. 2. Romanticization of life in Africa impregnated by sentiments and fantasies. 3. Failure to recognize that life anywhere in the world is all about the Benjamin (money). I've been planning my retirement in South Africa since 2017, during which I've been able to buy 6 houses and plan to buy another 3 next month before retiring in 2025. I've been traveling there every year since 2017 to lay the groundwork for my retirement. I never knew anyone there when I started in 2017 but have developed relationship with responsible people since 2017. You need to plan to move to Africa: failure to plan is akin to planning to fail. Many of those who are leaving are those who impulsively moved to Africa. I hear some stories of people moving there without prior visits and my jaw drops. Africa is a jungle, where humans and animals will eat you alive. The consequence of stupidity is failure.

Glad to see you back and pray you have a full recovery. I don't know if you remember, but I met you at the bank in Rwanda. I told you I went there because of you. I understand this post. I have seen people leave for the last two reasons. I have experienced the first reason. Loneliness is huge. In Rwanda, there seems to be a large expat community. If you get out there, you will find your tribe( people you can hang out with) Moving abroad is one of the best things I have ever done. I am glad I listened to you and went to Rwanda. It was not MY spot, but I had an amazing time, met wonderful people, and will never forget my time there.

Selam Dr Harnet, it's great to see you! I was in Rwanda for 3months, bought land and built chicken and beehive farm for the women in the village. Nowadays Africa is very expensive, but if you live like the native and stay away from the city it's much cheaper, of course my background makes a big difference (Eritrea, Ethiopia), by the way the #1 reason I had to do this, hoping this will help us to respect, love and help each other, to break the cycle poverty and hate among us/ melanated, form unity/One Africa ... I hope to see when I come back...

This is shameless opportunism. You should not blind to the political reality of Rwanda. Yoweri Museveni and Paul Kagame overthrew the majority Hutu government of Juvenal Habyarimana, and then drove out or killed as many Hutu as they could. Kagame then started selling Hutu land to some of you to make sure that the Hutu could never return. He also started looting eastern DRC, acting as the conduit for the mineral resources of that part of Africa to the West, and using his cut in this illicit business to improve the appearance of his country. All of you greedy opportunists have now descended on that overcrowded little country to get your completely undeserved pound of flesh. Shame on you.

Thank you for your comments and input Dr. Harnet. What would you suggest that new people of the diaspora do to promote and level up business to and make a business with some African nations that want to do business with the Black diaspora in mainly the West? Thank You! Good video and peace!

I think it is dealing with the reality vs. this utopia life that many people on the youtubes are promoting. Theres traveling for holiday, but also dealing with real life day to day living. And renewing the mindset and concepts of living on the Continent. Its great to be a dreamer but also realistic. I can honestly say if you don't have residual income living abroad then yes time to turn around and figure it out. Basically doing diligence research with yourself in how you really want to live your life. And when it comes to business thats a whole other story. Dr Harnet may God Bless you and your full recovery.

Dr. Harnett, Great to see you. Don't forget that there are healing modalities in Africa as well. Take advantage. Some of these modalities are as old as humanity, but little known today unless one seeks them out.

Hi Doc, A few years ago, I chanced upon your videos on KZfaq & had tried to follow you. But then you disappeared from the radar ... Anyway, it's nice to have you back & I pray to God to fully heal you. And regarding the topic of this video, I can't help responding to it, in fact, I find it annoying that we black people in this day & age, instead of using a Knowledge Base (KB) as a much more effective way of doing things, seem to be still relying on instinct, gut-feeling and conjecture of our forebears. In other words, I've been wondering why the Diasporans haven't undertaken studies about Africa before taking the plunge. To put it bluntly, the Diasporans need to start doing feasibility studies of Africa & such studies should include a SWOT Analysis, also a risk analysis. The ff definition of a feasibility study: "A feasibility study is a comprehensive evaluation of a proposed project that evaluates all factors critical to its success in order to assess its likelihood of success." To encapsulate, the Diasporans if they don't want to fail in Africa need to start doing feasibility studies of African countries and with time, these studies will go to form a much-needed Knowledge Base (KB) that will not only build a more accurate picture of the challenges involved in relocating to Africa but also identify the available investment opportunities. I've identified Import of secondhand American goods into Africa as a good business opportunity, obviously Africa being less industrialized, is in need of a whole gamut of manufactured goods & brand new Chinese manufactured goods having failed to impress many African customers because many of them are Mickey Mouse i.e. either they break down often or only last for a year or so, Africans if they're looking for e.g. a laptop to buy will now rather go for a secondhand Dell laptop which can still deliver for a number of years instead of a brand new Chinese Elonex brand laptop that only last for a year or so (I got this account from friends who used to buy container-loads of goods from China to sell in Africa but whose businesses have now floundered because of the Mickey Mouse nature of Chinese goods as explained above). To specify which American-made secondhand goods will find a ready market in Africa, the Diasporans will need to do some studies to identify which products will sell fast, etc. Notwithstanding, things like secondhand agricultural machinery, electric generators, well digging machinery, secondhand solar energy equipment, even beat-up pickups, trucks, tractors. will surely find a ready market. Also seeds for planting & ideally, seeds from the American South which is sub-tropical, also high-yield seeds are preferable. And a business could even be created by US Diasporans under the name of "Americana General Store" with branches in different African countries & with different Diasporans investing & in this business & then from the profits other ventures can be entered into e.g. agribusiness - in fact, Forbes magazine very recently published a report advising Africa to invest heavily in cassava production to use it to make bread as a possible solution for the Africa's over-reliance on wheat, whose supply has been problematic since the Ukranian War. Cattle-ranching is also another venture US Diasporans can engage in in Africa &, in this regard, the US being a leading cattle-ranching country, US Diasporans can help Africa with this invaluable know-how by investing in/undertaking in Africa cattle-ranching &, in return, they can export/sell on the American market the meat from Africa which I daresay will be more organic than in America because of Africa's more extensive & richer vegetation. After all, the US imports meat from Argentina & Brazil (?), so what are US Diasporans to Africa waiting for to go into cattle-ranching also farming? Hope my contribution of ideas as above is useful.
