Not being taken seriously by FF shooters is actually a badge of honor. Especially when you get published just as much as they do on a particular site. I've yet to have a client or anyone for that matter be able to tell me "your photos are obviously APSC, not full frame". Nobody can tell if the work is good enough. All my work has come from client referrals personally. The work will get you where you wanna be, not gear or other "professional" photographers. Also, I wish we had trees in Amarillo lol

@@DeeRosa off subject, but have you tried any of the Canon L glass on Fujis with the Fringer II adapter? DSLR glass is so cheap now. Even the high end pro stuff. I rented a 200 f2.8 L II to try out. You can buy it used for $400. Hoping it works good enough. Would be stellar on the XH2s.

@@DeeRosa I do own the Sigma 50-100 1.8 EFS version. It works pretty well. If you use the Fuji focus range limiter in camera it actually focuses fast enough for sports.

Second time in my life as a professional photographer. First time was back in the film days. The last two years shooting with an APSC camera. Anybody that asks what I shoot, I respond Sony. Sometimes they ask the model, then I say A6400. They say cool, okay. If they ask why I shoot an APSC camera, my answer depends on how asked. If they are an a-hole about it, I tell them it's 24 megapixel just like the full frame DSLR cameras 5 years ago, but better technology. If they are nice, I tell them it's lighter, cheaper and takes great images. The key is to know the limitations of your gear and work within it.

Loved your comment as it reminded me of one wedding i did for my Goddaughter. The lady they had doing the planning, asked if I were using Nikon, and I said no, I will be shooting with Canon. ( I was using Film ). When I replied Canon, she acted put off, offended, and actually muttered something about it. really? Wedding went well, and I managed to get a few good shots, despite using Canon. 😆

It's funny because usually the people who trash talk others photography because of gear, or talk about how better gear makes you pro or better at photography online also make an income through affiliate links or gear companies sponsoring them. It's almost as if their opinion was just a shitty ad campaign. If you want to give me your opinion, don't sell me a product. Else you aren't telling me an opinion, you are an ad.

Aye mad respect for you walking around downtown San Antonio taking pictures. I was down there near UTSA a month ago trying to take pics. Almost melted within twenty minutes and turned around and went home after taking one terrible photo lol. That heat is brutal. Good vid though!

Love your honesty and transparency of photography and the community. I am a hobbyist with serious GAS (18 cameras with one more to be purchased this month and 27 lenses). I don't get paid. I just enjoy making pictures and sharing with others. I don't look for kudos or anything else out of it. I do hate the gatekeepers, especially in the street photography community. I enjoy the work of photogs of the past, but I don't try to emulate them. I try to learn from them and their style to see if it would work to fuse into my own stuff. Again, another banger of a video. Glad I found you and started following you.

I’ve found there is a little ‘gear head’ in most every Photographer. Some are more likely to dwell on it, or allow themselves to be consumed by it, than others? Face it, if a person doesn’t like their camera, they are not likely gonna use it. Different strokes as they say. ✌

@@georgedavall9449 I totally understand. My purchases have never been because I don't like my current camera. Most just have different feel or features (film) or different image representations (digital sensors -- CCD vs, CMOS). Also, I sometimes find a good deal and can't pass it up. I used to be a new gear only snob, but as I am getting older and closer to retirement age, I realize there is some really good used gear out there.

I've been shooting digital for almost 20 years for pleasure, Fuji and Nikon now. I love your thoughts. I always shoot solo, never with groups of know-it-all people, I can learn the same on KZfaq, books and EXPERIENCE. Camera nuts annoy the hell out of me. Mainly on camera FORUMS. I was wowed by your Wedding tales, never knew all those sneaky criminal-like ways. I always say will never shoot a wedding due to bad customers stories lol

GREAT video :) Good concept and needs to be said… YES that “Peter McKinnon” is bad for film photography video really ticked me off!!! And the dude who made it actually pulled the “I’m actually a layer & don’t shoot professional” card just to cover his butt!!! I’m a graphic designer however also do a tonne of photography work too and have used micro four thirds on jobs for the last 7 years with no problems! So your right - the purest “gear” thing is a total joke!!! Great video man - keep it up :)

Thanks for the video. And sometimes the best gear is the gear you already have. Wether you bought it for a score, was given it free or over paid for it... just get out and shoot picures. I try every day to take photos. Granted they are several of the same.. but with different glass and settings its building up the confidence on when the weather is better i can take good photos. Ill never down anyone who has a point and shoot or a zoom camera. Infact i have one with 16 megapixels for sale. And doesnt matter to me what brand either. I love pentax, however i thought what my brothers wedding photographer had was pretty cool canon and told her so. So anyway... keep up the good work.

Oh my … great insight. The camera shoot at the Soccer ( football ) game was awesome ! This point is what drives me crazy the purist / elitist. Shall I say ( in general ) the Leica crowd. It is just about the gear and the assumption their images are better. I have just enjoyed photography for over 50 years and you can create awesome photos with most any camera. I share some of my fun on Social Media. If I want a large photographic image I go to ( as an example) Getty Images and buy the image I like from a Professional and frame it or them.

Myself I wouldn't want to do this as a job, then it wouldn't be my hobby and feel I would stop enjoying my time on the street shooting my way with no stress or deadlines.. That's just me and I'm sure others can rock it as a job and a hobby at the same time and love it... just my 2 cents.. Thanks Dee

Shooting for hobby is the most fulfilling form of photography. It’s why I still love it.

I am a proud amateur photographer. I am sort of a purist in photography. I don't tend to edit my photos and when I do it I only use in camera software (as I don't have any editing software), and I crop a photo only if it makes it look subjectively better. I take at most 2 max 3 photos of the same subject and never shoot more than a single frame at a time. My photography is primarily for myself: I immensely enjoy taking photos and I tend to like most of the photos I take, even when they are very simple and unsophisticated shots. If you need to edit every single photo you take to make it look perfect, take more than 10 continuous shots to reach the expected outcome, or use the latest and greatest cameras with the fastest autofocus to capture your amazing shots, you are probably not as good a photographer as you think. I normally shoot with slower, older cameras, often compact cameras with a fixed lens and with a not so good autofocus system. I think all these things combined make it much harder to take decent photographs, but still I manage that or at least I like the outcome of the images my way less sophisticated and expensive gear capture. I am sure my photos could look much better if I could afford a Sony A7r V or a Leica Q3. Other photographers can say what they want, but a better, newer, faster, more technological gear can make a huge difference in your ability to capture the perfect shot.

I have shot film for close to 50 years. Now at 72, my eyesight is not what it used to be, cost is just too much. I love shooting my fujifilm camera and basically using recipes to look like my old Nikon film cameras. Thankfully I am not any of the types you mentioned. Now I just need to scan 40 years of film.

Thank you for putting this Video out. One need not go any further than a site like ‘Fred miranda,’ or similar, and mind You, find some really talented people, but more often, very caustic, crass, downright hateful people that love to offer C&C. NOBODY Knows Everything. I’ve been picking up a camera for over 40 years, and there are days I swear I just started, because I forgot to check a setting, change a profile in camera, etc, or some other boneheaded move. 🙄 Instead of their being a ‘Community,’ of people whom support one another in a unique craft, it seems there are ‘Know it alls,’ snobs, what have you, and it is sad, and can be discouraging to anybody that is starting out? Rule 1: Never accept criticism from people you'd never accept advice from. Rule 2: Always remember who you were and how you started, because when you do become good, I'll be gentle with others. You sorta covered them in rule one, but you do find a lot of photographers who'll say things online they wouldn't ever have the nerve to say to someone in real life. Not just golden rules. But good overall advice.

i absolutely hate gear snobs! i remember when i started out shooting and was dunked on by one of the other photographers at my school because i prefered rangefinders over SLRs which are "obviously" the superior choice because of "what you see is what you get" etc. oNlY aN iDiOT wOuLd cHoOsE rAnGeFiNDerS oVeR an SLR. i think they fail to account for the fact that making an image should be fun as well and if i find joy in using a rangefinder then whats the harm?

I’ve gotten that same flack talking about “rangefinders aren’t good for portraits and you should go back to SLR” recently. Because the was. Look at how he treated Eggleston and said about Amstel Adams. Research how he talked shit about color photography while he was shooting color and then destroyed it all once people found out.

@@DeeRosa i see your point. However if there is one asshole photographer it must be Eggleston lol (how he reacts to fans 🤣). Its true that Bresson was extremely harsh on Martin Parr too. But that I dont find so surprising. I dont however understand the criticism on Ansel Adams and Weston as much. As for experimenting with color photography and deciding it couldn’t live up to monochrome (in those days) isn’t that crazy of a thought. Probably much less tonality. Color can also be very distracting and disrupt a composition if you’re not taking the colors in account to the whole composition. If you want to use it well its much harder to master. And yet mostly everyone is shooting in color nowadays 😅. i think Alex Webb is kind of like Bresson in Color. And he mastered color photography too. Its an interesting conversation to be had. But thank you for sharing your viewpoint. Now it makes much more sense to me 🙏🏻

I don't think people are mad at McKinnon for shooting film. Saying he is quitting digital photography. Bullshit. Pretending he knows which end of a screwdriver to hold. Trying so hard to be a 'truck guy'. Raptor. Lightning. Vintage. Whatever. He doesn't even show photos anymore. All he does is show Chris' and Matti's stuff now (which is OK because they are amazing artists). And shill his pirate shit, of course. McKinnon sold out. And fine - nothing wrong with cashing in. But in the process, he is no longer the Peter that many of us fell in love with watching. And THAT is why people are saying shit about McKinnon. Except his ever-loving fanboys, of course.
