I bought a CVA Scout SS in 35 Whelen back in the winter and plan to hunt with it this fall. I paid 300 cash and it came with a scope and 3 boxes of ammo. I couldn't let that deal go!

@@cw2a The 350 Whelen packs a good punch and the fella I bought it from only shot it twice and he bought it new. 2nd hand new works for me. The ammo alone was right at 100 bucks.

71 year old FUD here. If you run the numbers for the 225 grain Nosler Accubond or Partition at 2800 fps through a good ballistic calculator you will see that the trajectory for the 35 Whelen is less than one inch difference than the 180 grain 30-06 out to 300 yards or maybe a little farther. Maximum effective point blank range probably around 275 yards with a plain Jane scope. Sight it dead on at 250 yards. With a modern dial it up scope you’re good to 400 yards where that bullet is still clocking over 2000 fps and over 2000 ft lbs remaining kinetic energy.

@@davewinter2688 Its an amazingly efficient cartritage!! But hitting 2800 may be the issue. Its looking like even tho I have 25+" I have a "slow" barrel. My top loads were just over 2725 but showed poor accuracy. I donOt have 4064 that Id like to use.

@@cw2a I think it’s rare to see a 35 Whelen with barrels over 24”. Oddly, Nosler uses a 26” barrel for their testing. What is the condition of your rifle’s bore. What are its actual measurements, bore and groove diameter and groove depth? Many folks think that because the 35 Whelen is shooting a big heavy bullet that it needs a slow burning powder but that is not the case. Generally the medium to faster powders do the trick. IMR 4064 is a long time favorite and about the slowest usually recommend. I’d look at Varget and RL15. One powder that seems to be recommended for the fastest velocities in the newest reloading manuals is IMR 8208 XBR. I’ve never used it. I think a big thing to remember is that unless you’re one who thinks he can shoot out to 400 yards on elk, you don’t need a premium bullet at those higher velocities. For Whitetails and Mule deer the 200 grain bullets like the old Remington CoreLokt will work just fine at 2500-2600 fps. Just find the most accurate loads for your rifle. Hopefully you can find some IMR 4064, but be prepared to pay for it. If you’re after Elk there are several powders that will get the 250 grain Nosler Partition up to 2500 fps with good accuracy and energy out to 350 yards. I don’t have any experience with the all copper bullets like the TTSX but you might look at those. They seem to be getting a lot of favor.

@@davewinter2688 I agree. I considered the Brown Whelen and the Improved version when I built this but decided a slight longer bbl could bridge the gap cheaper. Im not a fan of most copper bullets. They simply do. Ot "kill" as wuickly. I have used both almost SxS and hands down Cup and Core are superior. But Im not hunting critters that require deep penetration. Copper bullets also suffer at distance because have a much higher velocity thresh hold for proper expansion. I don't hunt long range so not a part that concern's me.

Got a barreled action from McGowen back in 1976 . (Mauser 98 ) . Shot mostly 250gr Speer & Hornady @ 2600 - 2650 fps . 200gr @ 2900fps . My go to now is 225gr Accubonds @ 2750 . Shoots flat enough for 350 yds & really thumps moose ! I neck up 270 win cases so I can trim the case mouths square & still be 2.484 inches . Kicks less than 300 mags ! Too bad it's not more popular .

@@user-vf2hq3xg9c Brilliant!! Thats perfect and what I envisioned for the rifle back in 1987. I loaded 200 Hornady's to 2900 fps and stomped more then a few Whitetails with that load. I miss those 250g Speer RN. I also have chosen the 225 aaccubond and I am working up a load. 🙏🇺🇸❤️‍🩹

Bought my limited run pump 7600 brand new for $619 a few years bask brand new. They were offering them for old school prices! That was about a year or so before Remington went belly up.

The 35 whelen is big hard hitting rifle marked by some as the American 375H&H for big game. I know love in Canada and alaska and yukon . Here, Pa had a friend and grandpap swear by it in a pump, Remington. Iv seen curtain cva scouts offered in it. 338 win mag is a family favorite, dad move to it after 30-06 bever turn back for 20 some year . My brother has it know and load him some speer 225gr sp for it. Dad loves 308 and 45-70 know.

This was and is one of the best large game cartridges for North America. Loaded properly and used within its proper range for the animal chosen, it will cleanly kill anything we have here. My 350 Remington Mag is nearly identical in performance when both are loaded hot with up to a 225gr bullet. The heaviest bullets (250+) fare a little better in the 35 Whelen due to the longer case (and magazine length) being able to accommodate the longer bullets. My 358 Norma Mag will outrun the 35 Whelen at longer ranges with less drop but they are both capable of the same basic list of animals. The surprise for me was how comparatively light the recoil is with the 35 Whelen. My Dad's Whelen kicks less than my 350 Rem Mag. To me the 35 Whelen with a 225 gr bullet kicks like a hot loaded 180gr bullet in an average weight 30-06 rifle. Why (outside of the 350 Legend) does America hate the 35 caliber? I just don't understand it. There are so many great 35 cals starting with the 35 Remington and including the 358 Winchester, 35 Whelen, 350 Remington Magnum, 358 Norma Magnum, and the many, many wildcats

@@cw2a 250's at 2800 fps are pleasant to shoot through mine. I built it on a BSA Monarch action, a 25" Douglas air-gaged barrel and a blank of Bastogne walnut that I shaped into a wide butt to absorb recoil. It weighs just under 9lbs scoped. It kicks like a 30-06 in a light weight rifle.

hello Pat!! It could go pretty Quick... Lets see Factory 200 is about 2500. Id bet 2700 would not be too difficult. But maybe something like a 90g 380 bullet could be 3000+! I know I have shot 56g 9mm bullets in my 350 Legend past 3100 fps!! ( I did a video!!)

As u know this is my favorite cartridge 💯's of miles behind, and tons of edibles stashed in freezers. Elaborated on my top loads before. Number of successful harvest from pronghorn up to 🫎. You are correct on the limit of the Hornady 200gr interlock as experienced on a solid mulie, and one elk that resulted in fragments and poor penetration. Mountain man

SAAMI MAP for 35 Whelen is actually 62,000 PSI same as 375 H&H. As such the 35 Whelen will propel any same weight bullet as fast or faster than the often ballyhooed 9.3x62. Just for reference SAAMI MAP for 30-06 is 60,000 PSI and 65,000 PSI for 270 Winchester.
