Seagate Expansion Cards are the fastest and most efficient external storage options for the Xbox Series X|S. But are they worth the price? They handle Xbox Series X | S optimized games incredibly well, so well that any games running on a Seagate Expansion card will act and feel like they're running on the internal storage. That's not the case for games running off an external HDD or SSD via USB.

When you start to compare the "cost-per-gig" to alternative storage options, the Seagate Expansion Card is still a ripoff. You can get a much cheaper HDD or SDD, but they will have their limitations. The good news is that the NVMe technology should get cheaper as time goes on.
One thing to consider, a 2TB Xbox Series X Expansion Card would give you a 3TB Xbox Series X! If you're using a Series S, you'd have over 2.5TB of storage by purchasing this card! It will definitely hurt the wallet though. Are you going to get a Seagate Expansion Card?

I own the 1TB expansion card for my Series S. If I owned the Series X, and if I were also inclined to buy a majority of the games to truly own from Gamepass tryouts, then I'd go with the 2 TB option. Hear me out. I believe the 1 TB option paired with the S is an excellent option, especially if you're lazy and don't want to move stuff around all of the time while simultaneously trying to enjoy the series enhancements. After all, you get close to 1.37 TB of usable space. However, it should be only considered for budget gaming with all the benefits you can get with it. For those that are completely on a budget, or simply don't own a Series X, then don't go with the 2TB option. Go with the 1TB tops. Pay for the premium if you're intention is to max out the console experience, while being lazy at the same time anyway.

Got a 5TB hdd for 99bucks. I store the games I’m currently playing on the internal. The way i look at is I can only play so many games at once anyway.

@@DPTBassment Fair enough. I don't regret my decision though. I use Quick Resume so much that it's not even funny... Also, I know that it doesn't take very long to transfer content in between drives, even the mechanical ones. However, I'm lazy and just want to play everything, that I'm in the mood for any way, all in one package. It's all good though. So long as everyone gets what they want, to each their own. I got what I wanted. Hopefully all of that makes sense.

the mayor issue with the card is that xbox doesnt allow other manufacturers like wd or samsung to develop their own. its a monopole situation for seagate and it really makes the price stable over the years. its the same price as 2 years ago

They're just reproducing what they did for the expansion drives for the 360 back in the day. They gave Seagate exclusive rights back then as well, and the drives were ridiculously expensive. It's really not worth it, tbh.

A reply to this thread months later notified me that this is not true anymore: As far as I understand the 2TB piece is much faster than the 1TB, it would have been nice to check moving speeds when talking about that limited badge. According to some other YT videos the speed diff is enormous.

I already got the 2 TB upgrade for my series ask it did cost me about $358 but if I build in my own, it would probably cost over like $100 more than I would be paying for because of the high demand so I already picked up mine and I love it

Just got the Series S today actually it’s my first Xbox I’ve ever owned always been a PlayStation guy (still am) wanna see if the grass is greener on the other side with that being said I’ll definitely be picking up a 2tb SSD in the future for my Series S.

I only purchased it because I plan on keeping my series x and s for yeeeeears. I actually love remote play and it requires downloaded games. Over time that adds up,especially with all the games that are only playable via internal storage. Price sucks still but that’s were we are in 2022

I use the SSD Sandisk Portable Extreme 2TB and I reach 2.6Gbps, thought it was slow considering moving internal ssd to expansion card is 6.3 Gbps. Has anyone reach more speed with an external SSD?

one of the biggest problems i have is slow internet. i wouldn't mind deleting old games and installing new ones to my internal if it weren't for the fact they take weeks if not a month to download.. which is part of the reason why i like to archive as much as i can since i never know when i'll be able to play a new release.

I currently have a 1TB expansion card and although the 2TB won’t be an immediate purchase I will end up buying it. I think you are missing a huge point. Most new games are HUGE! That being said my internet is slow. I don’t have a lot of download speed so I really need to store everything I might want to play. Mind you I also have a 5TB ext HDD which I upgraded shortly before I got my series x. I was just out of space on my old 2 TB ext hdd. That’s important I was already out of space before the series consoles. Now with the them converting games to upscale my “designed for series x/s” alone takes up almost all of my ssd storage. As you pointed out it is super annoying transferring between internal and external. The 400 usd price tag is ridiculous I can’t deny that. In my situation all you can really do is shrug and say well that sucks give them their money and move on. Lastly sometimes* there is a difference between game files destiny 2 for example download it on a regular Xbox one a non series. Then using your external try to transfer it over to a series console it won’t work. So if you are going to play the library shuffle game just be aware some games require different versions.

I’ve recently just purchased it for only $300 along with the Xbox series s for the same price. This will be the first time that I had a Xbox since the 360. I mostly had PlayStation for most of my experience from the PS2 to the PS4.

I have watched a few videos about this expansion card. What no one talks about is this type of device (solid state storage) does not have unlimited writes. So copying the came over to your internal storage every time you want to play it is going to shorten the life of your internal storage. How much? depends on how much you use it.

While that is true to an extent, today's modern SSDs have an EXTREMELY HIGH durability for writes. Just doing the worst case scenario on writing to an SSD (which even the most hardest of hardcore xbox user would never get close to), that drive will still last about 50 -100 years. So that's really not an issue anymore.

I mean the cost of the NVMe drives in the next gen consoles are pretty expensive on their own, so it's just not feasible for them to put say a 2TB drive and still charge $500. We will probably see 2TB versions later on when the price drops on the drives.

Forgot exactly where I read the information; but to my understanding, the 2tb $400 expansion card has faster read/write speeds than the internal 1tb SSD inside the Xbox series X & 1tb $200 expansion card… Can someone clarify this for me? I have terrible interent so this will make my life way better, being sble to store a large catalouge of gsmes rather than tsking hours to install and uninstall games on a consistent basis. Its also 30% rn on amazon so big up.

I had to buy this ssd and it's because my Xbox fills up really fast. The price sucks though but it's needed. Since games nowadays take up a lot of space. Especially if you have the Series S it's a must.

After software update series x backside USB ports stopped working i plug a harddisk behind my xbox and a Samsung SSD for captures now those both usb ports doesn't work i feel really forced to buy this i want from atleast to capture my gameplays

It’s ridiculous! But, storage costs always go down. HDDs use to cost hundreds of dollars for just a few hundred gigs. It will just take time. The frustration for me is I don’t want to have to transfer games from an HDD to the internal storage. I feel forced to buy a Seagate NVMe 🥲

X with a 2tb expansion card and a 2tb ssd. Already had the ssd when I traded in my xbox one and I waited a few weeks before I ordered the expansion card... the way I see it is I had the Xbox one for years and I modded it (thermal grizzly thermal paste and a internal 512gb ssd for boot... 2 tb ssd over usb and a 4tb hdd over usb) and gamestop gave me $30 more then I had invested into it (still had the boot ssd) and I plan on keeping the X for longer then I kept the one (I still have a 1X for my kids to play on and it has the 4tb hdd)... 5tb per xbox means I have as many game pass games as I want for a full house and my clients (I work with special needs adults). I don't play all the time and its normally forza when I do... but I am an enthusiast and I do have a use for it as both of my Xbox's have less then 800gb free

I waited a year. Did the whole redownloading things didn’t bother me or my wife who were both on series x cause we share plus my rig. She works from home for the cable company doing business so we got business internet here so I could download games pretty quick. The WD black card came out for the series consoles. Which made seagate drop there’s for the same price. So was able to get the same card for 149 no tax up here for 1TB under the price of the 399 for two 1TB for both our x’s. Always better to wait.

1TB should be enough if you’re casual or don’t game very often. PS5, I had to go 2TB because those games eats up space very fast. Plus I saw the Samsung 980 Pro with Heatsink 2TB for less than $300 and I couldn’t refuse.

you should also point out that transferring your games back and forth can shorten the life span of your system ssd cause you can only write to them so many times. if you have the series s i would consider at least the 1 tb one

@@hartfantom It's a fact of life for SSDs. Look up "SSD life expectancy" and "SSD write cycles." Data can only be written on a storage cell inside the chips between approximately 3,000 and 100,000 times during its lifetime.

yes but most of them can write anywhere from 600tb and up of data over the lifetime. so yeah, I wouldnt move 100gb games around a lot, but a few moves a year arent going to kill the drive

I’m a casual gamer couple days a week. Got a 2tb external ssd and 1 tb hdd and it’s a pain transferring games all the time. Looking at getting the 2tb seagate external ssd for less hassle over the years I’ve got 350 games now

I have an 8tb Seagate Hub+ for external storage. Until Microsoft offers a better storage option, I'm good with supposed limitation. I currently have about 70 games installed and it only took up 2TB. About 5TB left.

Strangely enough the 2Tb has a 'faster' transfer speed than the 1Tb @ over 6GBPS, which I find weird as it's using the system/connection.

The momory controllers are different on each storage card thus the speeds will be different

There is no option to play the XB1 version of games that are series games because Smart Delivery isn't optional. The only exceptions are games like AC Odyssey and Skyrim that got optimization patches, but not Series versions.

My gaming PC currently has 1.5TB(1TB and 500GB M.2 SSDs) for gaming while also having 2TB HDD for other stuff. I think I can live with just a 1TB expansion for my planned Series S purchase.

Sure can! They’re also “hot-swappable”. That means you don’t even need to turn the console off to unplug one, and then plug a different one in. You can unplug a 1TB and then plug in a 2TB right from the Xbox dashboard if you want. Thanks for the comment!

I traded in loads of stuff plus my 1TB expansion card to get store credit. So I only paid £50 for my 2TB Expansion Card in the end. Also have two 4TB External SSD’s. I might have an expensive set up. 😂

Thing is. This is a must. I started in the N64 then PS1 day. So, I remember my PS2 memory card was 128MB. And it went so far. Memory has bigger and bigger each generation. I remember the Xbox 360 going to GB and that seemed loads. So, 1TB on my Xbox Series X. I thought you’d never come close to using that. Oh boy. It’s not even remotely close to being enough. All my games are digital an installed now. And they’re BIG files now games. So, 11 games in. Memory near on gone. Fallout 4 and Skyrim with 100’s of mods. All my memory is totally gone now. So, I have no choice. I just have to pay this Seagate 2TB expansion pack. It’s on offer ATM at half the price nearly. £189. I mean the thing costs nearly as much as little baby Xbox Series S. So, only Xbox Series X owners like me will be getting this. If an Xbox Series S owner bought this. Why go for the budget model. TBF. I doubt they’d have issues as much with memory. As they won’t be running mods. Have as much games etc. WOW. I just checked, and the Xbox Series S only has 512GB. Christ. That I could not live with. The memory alone is why I couldn’t have that consoles! 😂

@@AreYoOk don’t ask me. I guess, some people had crazy saves. Game like Final Fantasy at the time used a lot of SPACE. Also people use put no game things on it. It’s been so long. I can’t even remember. I’m pretty I need two memory cards, as they just didn’t have enough space. But, I can’t remember if that was the PS1 or PS2. It’s all so long ago. I’ve got so used to console having the memory now. I switched the Xbox from the Xbox 360 onwards, and they all have the memory within the console (I know the PlayStation did from that era on too). What is crazy. My Xbox Series X has 1 Terabite of space. I was thinking, Jesus, I will never use all that space. It’s silly, I kid you not. It’s not even remotely close to being enough. Not even remotely. As I downloaded all games for the store now (and even if you have a disc, it has to be downloaded onto the console doenst it. I don’t know. I just don’t buy disc now. No point). These games, next gen, are like 100GB+ EASY. Barely save 6-7 games in your library, I have to keep deleting and re-downloading games!

I jus rather copy and transfer games thru hdd way faster than redownloading. I always leave 120 somethin gig on the internal and jus swap and transfer. So I always have room to transfer

I use a 1Tb SSD hard drive, it takes roughly 2-3mins to transfer a 60-80GB game to the internal drive. I download all games to the SSD and then transfer when I am going to play 3-4 games per month

@@dawnslayer unless you are using a stopwatch, you won't notice the day-2-day performance. I have both a Xbox series x and one x. on the one-x I use a 2tb crucial ssd rated at 1080MB/s. The only difference is the start up which still uses an internal hard disk, all games are loaded on the ssd crucial drive on the One X, and there is roughly 2-7 sec difference between the series x and one x. I mostly play warzone and F1

I can’t run the games at all off a usb 3.0 drive - it’s weird but I thought I could play them off a usb hard drive and the only thing that wouldn’t work is the next gen features etc. and not for nothing but the 550 they are charging thru the affiliate link is ridiculous and I would rather buy another series X and have a 2nd system set up in my house than to buy that.

I would have preferred the consoles to have say 4-5TB and be insanely expensive but I have to admit having both the 1TB and 2TB card. They do help alot with game and space management. Probably the most I've spent on a console + accessories in my life but I do love what I get from high quality gaming and the cards themselves so I personally can't complain about the price.

I have 30 games, and most of them are more than 30 GB. However, I don't need any external drive. I can install games when I am outside home or during the night when I am sleeping. Even with no external drive, I still have 5-7 games on my Series S, and I can shift playing these games, which are enough.

They've pulled a sony or ps vita memory cards which were stupidly expensive. You could put your large games onto the internal storage and use a external drive for smaller games or just leave them till you want to download them again, has microsoft remember what youve purchased in your games collection.

Think im going to invest in the 2TB expansion its a pain having to keep transferring. 1TB holds 10 games 2TB can hold 50 games. So come payday think ill get one. Ive just come from a XB one X to a series X

The simplest reason why this expansion card is expensive: Transfer rate is much faster than USB-3 SSD especially during gameplay. For instance, I was looking for 128GB micro SD card for my camera. While browsing I noticed the 2 cards have same amount of storage but the price is different. The 1st SD card has 8MB/s transfer rate with decent price while the other card with 10MB/s is bit expensive. I might buy this expansion card if there's promo or discount ie. Amazon Prime Day, Black Friday deal.

No clue why this card is controversial. I bought it for my xbsx. Microsoft is literally charging the same amount of money as any nvme drive. I just bought a 2 tb drive for my ps5 and it was also $400. Memory is expensive atm. Nothing we can do about that. The only con I see is that it’s a proprietary drive while the PS5s isn’t and can be reused outside of gaming.

I would buy the 2tb version but it’s expensive. Im waiting for my tax return before I purchase it. As for what category I fit into, I’m a hardcore gamer off/on but I have an extensive library. I got 130+ games internal is full & my 4tb hdd is full as well. I’m currently looking at buying a 5tb hdd & the 2tb expansion card to give me a grand total of 12tb combined

I picked up a 1TB earlier this week for 150 quid on eBay, once I’ve got the 10% cashback from Complete Savings and 1% from my bank card it will have set me back £133.50 so 163 USD approx. Even at that price I still feel it’s on the steep side but if you need one then you got to swallow it I suppose 😒

I'm warning if they're ever going to put like oh you can keep all the games on your console but not the full like you got a little space that takes a maybe one or two gigs and all that is is like the boys file so when you delete not installed you don't have to do the whole thing it will just keep like a little archive file on a console with a little bit of the game so instead of taking 10 hours to move things around and re-download different things it will take light a few minutes cuz you have like a part of it already there😢 12 terabyte outside hard drive

Recently bought this and followed the instructions to insert this card in the back and get it set up, but for some reason it makes my Xbox trip out. It'll disconnect all wireless functions, meaning I can't even connect to my wifi or connect any remotes and then it'll shut off, like it gave up or something. Anyone else have this problem with this thing? I removed the expansion card and none of these issues stayed, but come back if I plug it back in. Help needed ASAP.

If you are truly commited to gaming its worth it and almost necessary. If you are just a casual gamer you probably dont have enough games to fill the internal storage and its not worth it. You have to know you and this will make your gaming setup very expensive!

Apart from the price £££ $$$! my main complaint is you DON'T get 1tb(1024Gb) or 2tb(2048Gb) storage. In my opinion it's a con.

Yeah, the way it’s formatted/shipped to you makes it come with less storage. The 1 TB model comes with, I think, about 920GB. And the 2TB comes with about 1.8 TB. It does suck 😔
