Missing link is an accurate description. Thanks for the valuable lesson Duane! As an ear player for 30+ years I've figured a lot of this out on my own but I owe you a debt of gratitude for giving me a systematic way to approach chord substitution. Million thanks sir! You easily save me another 3 years of trial and error.

G'day Duane..i play guitar,have done for over 20 years now..Lately I like to play 'melodic rock/metal'..but like that bass player said below,,it was somehow more understandable getting a chord sub lesson from your keys..you're so fluent as a player and mindful to explain it succinctly as you did it..I'll be writing those key points out too..taking something complicated and almost abstract & summing it up as you did is very clever..as others are saying..thank you for sharing your 'gift'. (which probably was hard work many hours & the occasional happy accident)..sounded beautiful too

Another thing you can do to really jazz up your songs is to substitute a chord that is a triton away from the dominant 7 chord that you're meant to be playing. So if the music says C7 you can play a Gb7, provided the melody allows it.

So what do i do for an inverted major chord to substitute the minor 7th?
@dylanratliff777
@dylanratliff777 7 жыл бұрын
The 3rd rule is actually a 2-5-1 gospel progression. In C it's a 5-1-4, in which the 5 (G) is minor and the 1 (C) is dominant. This will bring you to the 4 (F maj). This actually utilizes the mixolydian mode of the C major scale. Anyways, I digress. God bless! Good video!

Dylan Ratliff why does the 2-5-1 become a 5-1-4 in the key of C? The key Is irrelevant right. You’re just subbing 5-1-4 for 2-5-1 right?

Wanted to get your course titled "playing hymns and gospel songs using chord styles" and I was wondering if it can help me vary harmonies of church hymns to the extent of doing it on impulse like you normally do. Hi,please i want to know if it can also be called chord inversion. Thanks for your help in advance.
@rootberg
@rootberg 8 жыл бұрын
+Aquila Ema No they are two different concepts. The "inversion" concept has to do with the order in which you voice a chord. A Cmajor chord has three inversions for example depending on which order you play the notes in: C E G, E G C and G C E. But the "substitution" concept is about how we can change the chords normally associated with each note of a scale to another one which is harmonically related some how and therefore still sounds nice.
@hcasting847
@hcasting847 8 жыл бұрын
One question that bothers me about what chord contain the note G and you can use that chord as a substitute chord correct me if I'm wrong here basically I can use any chord and add the note g to the chord even if it not already existed on the chord. For example Gb major is out of the list because it's Gb Bb Db but I can add G to that chord and it would be Gb b9 which does contain the note g or am I wrong here ?
@jackstrada5263
@jackstrada5263 5 жыл бұрын
H Casting You’re example may not be wrong but that’s not what he meant. It isn’t simply adding a G note to whatever chord. It’s finding chords that contain G already. Then you have to go by ear. It must sound good against the melody, which is subjective.
@J-Land

The 3rd rule you stated for a dominant G7th chord to go a 4th below a G which you said comes out to a D note & build a minor 7th chord from the D note. Wouldn't a 4th below a G note be a C note? Please clarify this concept.
@PlayPiano
@PlayPiano 8 жыл бұрын
No Conway - a 4th (perfect 4th, as it is known in music theory) below G is D. See en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perfect_fourth
@ConwayCreator

@jackstrada5263

Conway Courier it’s a little confusing. If you count forward from the 1 to the 5 it’s 5 notes. But when you count down from the 1 to the 5 it’s only 4. C, B, A, G = 4. C, D, E, F, G = 5. Understand? Just because it’s a 4th below doesn’t mean it’s a 4th.

This may have been asked already but as far as replacing a major with its relative minor goes, does that only work for the tonic or can you slip in a relative minor of say the fourth or fifth chord in the scale?
@PlayPiano
@PlayPiano 10 жыл бұрын
Yes Lindsay - you can use this substitution on the IV chord - don't think it will work on a V chord.
@jackstrada5263
@jackstrada5263 5 жыл бұрын
Duane Shinn I humbly disagree. In the key of C for example I will sometimes sub and E minor for the G. It depends on the melody, as usual. Sometimes descend from the G down to E as well, instead of holding on G. It does not work so well when resolving back to the 1. It works better when the phrase ends on G.

no, a tritone sub is the dominant chord built on the note a tritone (3 whole steps) away from the tonic of the original chord. for G7 that would be B7 or Eb7 (i believe).
@AmourSynthetique
@AmourSynthetique 7 жыл бұрын
Nope, that's not correct in the slightest. The tritone is a perfect fourth away from the tonic, yes... ergo the tritone sub of G7 is Db7. I don't know where you're getting B and Eb from.
