The Forty Part Motet. This is a 3 minute excerpt from a 13 minute sound installation by Janet Cardiff.
In this work, each of the voices of Thomas Tallis' 1575 composition, Spem in Alium have been recorded separately and are played back individually through one of forty speakers. As you walk around the space, you can listen to each of the voices in turn, or to all of them together from the middle of the room.

I chanced upon this at the Art Gallery of Ontario some years ago. Amazed, I sat down on the bench and didn't move for the entire piece. Would love to hear it sung live, but this was pretty good!!

Love this, but I do have a question ! Are the movements in voices only present in this binaural mixdown, or are they also already there during the live installation ? Thanks :)

I actually can't remember how the recording for the video was made. Don't think it was binaural actually, but it might be... I think the movement you're hearing was the stereo mic moving through the installation. If you experience the piece installed you can get the same effect by walking around the speakers and creating your own mix of the piece, which is what I like to do. If you sit in the middle you're physically surrounded by Tallis' compostion as he engages the space by using different singer's at different times in a completely 3 dimensional way. It's great this way as well. For me, its always a disappointment to hear the piece over two speakers on youtube... or even on a good stereo, sorry, G.B.M.
