Some food for thought, if they had developed the 400, we probably wouldn't have seen the 383 development we've had for 40 years, it created opportunity for guys like Joe Sherman to push the 350 block combos to do things it was never designed to do, blessings in disguise

Those 195AFR's made 560HP on my 3.5" stroke 400SB (377 cu/in) motor with a slightly bigger solid roller cam. It had a 2925 Super Victor and HP750 Holley on it. My buddy's Froude GH490 Dyno which is WAY CONSERVATIVE....So, there is a replacement for displacement, it's called RPMs BABY! Made those number @ 7500 RPM, Scat 46lb aero contour crank ($600 Interweb special), Manley USA Ibeam rods, Mahle pistons & rings, MSD dist.
@davidbilliter5619 Жыл бұрын
Never really a replacement for displacement as long as there are parts that will move enough air to build a bigger displacement air pump . As long as the air is avaliable, a bigger displacement engine will make more power . I used to think boost was a replacement for displacement , but thats not true either . Problem with boosting big displacement is chassis , not ability to make power. If top fuel could hook over 500cid, they would run it . Displacement always wins if all else is equal if you can put it to the road.

Beast! Ive recently reverted back to playing with older carbed small blocks got lil tired of messing with vanilla LS's. Not saying they suck Seems like all LS motors pretty much, look,sound, and run the same and everyones got one. For the last year i built just a mild chevy 350 for my boat and helped my brother with his ford 347 in his 65' comet and contimplating what next. Something special and badass about the old school chevys that a LS never delivered

I agree with this. I have a 400sbc sitting in my building right now that I passed up building for a 6.0ls cause it was cheaper. 1.33hp/ci on a mild-moderate cruiser build, that's pretty decent. We are close to finished with my wife's '63 Chevy II that we have a somewhat similar 383 build in. Same heads, compression is 10.8:1, 241/247 @ .050, .583/.565", 112LSA, 108CL. I couldn't get an airgap at the time, so it just has the standard performer RPM with 1/2 spacer. I went with 112LSA because of how light the car is and the gearing (3.06 1st gear and 3.89's). I'm willing to trade a little lower end tq for upper end hp for traction purposes. We are also using the same Holley Sniper that you have used in the past. I'm guessing it's going to make around 510-520hp at 6400ish on 93 octane.

The Demon ran lean across the board... air bleeds was my first thought. But then the problem of going more lean with bigger jets: emulsions also? Very unusual event - would be interesting to see that carb sorted. From personal experience, there was a period of time where the qc on those metering blocks needed help. You have to get a 10x set of jewelers glasses and find the occlusions - I had all 4 idle wells with about 30% blockage to transfer/idle passage, and an air bleed with 20% blocked. Dull bits, high rpm, or excessive feed rates maybe? Aluminum will wipe instead of cut when it starts to build up too much heat in any cutting operation. If memory serves, idle air bleeds were 0.070" and emulsions were 0.030"/0.029"/0.030" [top to bottom] as delivered back before Holley bought them out.

I had an early demon 750 that ended up having aluminum shavings/flashing that looked like a hellicoil, once i took it apart. It was in there from the factory. I had just put this demon 750 on, while my vehicle was in my garage, and i had the air cleaner off just letting it idle, setting the idle mixture, gave it a quick jab to ✔️ throttle response, and all of a sudden fuel just squirted out of the top of the carb., and landed right on the hot hedders, it started a fire right away! I scrambled n shut off the vehicle, n ran over to get a hose that wasnt Long enough, but i was just able to reach the fire with the weak azz water pressure we had, n put it out. I took the carb back, and got a 750 holley dp w/notched floats n jet extensions(that i put on),blocked off the power valve, n i put 80 jets front n rear, n it ran great=no more fires!

The fix for that is to adjust the secondary throttle stop underneath the carb in the throttle plate open the secondary idle stop up to the transfer slot and adjust the primary closed back under the transfer slot. That gives you more air and less fuel at idle, if that’s still not enough air due to the cam then drill 5/32” holes in the primary butterfly’s to provide more idle air.

I sent my stock 400 block out to get splayed caps installed and will be running a pro comp 4340 lightweight crank because I got a great deal on it many years ago new. I need rods and pistons to compliment the crank. Anybody run one of these cranks. The weights are sharpened, undercut and it has lightening holes on the throws.

Nice power for the set up. What would be gained if he used 1.6 rockers. 1.33 hp per cube, so if that was 355 ci. Would that make 475 hp ? Thanks nice work

I'm using the same heads on my wife's 383, built to be a moderately aggressive cruiser. Our cam has a bit more duration, but lift is similar (.546/.565 with 1.5 rockers). Because these AFR heads have exceptional flowing exhaust ports, I was comfortable running a 1.6 intake rocker, with keeping the 1.5 exhaust rocker. Making it .583/.565. I spoke with AFR before doing so, as I thought about running a 1.6 exhaust rocker, which would have made it .603. The tech guy at AFR said that the springs are good to .600 and that .603 shouldn't be an issue, but stated that he wouldn't chance it. I'd be happy with 1.33hp/ci with her 383.

I see this 406/AFR head combo broke over 500 lb./ft. torque. I used to always see this result in car magazines, whereas other brands of cylinder heads would only reach 450-475 lb./ft. torque. Is the extra 25-50 lb./ft. torque the product of the efficiency of the AFR heads or should other heads be able to produce that kind of torque?
@WeingartnerRacing Жыл бұрын
The heads that usually make less torque are as cast. Ported heads are usually the same or better.

Ive always been under the impression that a wider lobe CL makes more cylinder pressure. A 106 CL vs 110 CL with same dur and lift, the 106 has less cranking compression along with a rougher idle due to less vacuum. Are you talking cylinder pressure at higher rpm?
@WeingartnerRacing Жыл бұрын
The tighter lobe separation builds more cranking compression not wider.

@@WeingartnerRacing Doesn't a tighter LSA have more overlap? Causing a rougher idle?
@WeingartnerRacing Жыл бұрын
@@richardb6273 yes but the entire valve events are compressed and add to cranking compression. Tighter lsa makes more torque down low and works best on lower compression. Most people don’t care about idle quality

You lose signal pressure by going too big of a carb right? Not saying it can't be tuned, but you should spec a NA carb to the engine needs right? (Cubic inch x max RPM) ÷3456?
@WeingartnerRacing2 жыл бұрын
Maybe but the engine wants what it wants. My 355 should not like a 1000cfm carb but it does.

@@WeingartnerRacing carbs are more complex than complicated, and can be run great WOT, then suck driving down a road, especially when you got secondaries that can open at certain times and changes signal pressure, etc. I've heard SMI does a good job at making carbs run great. Anyways, That's why I go EFI. Way easier IMO. Keep up the good videos bud.

Dart sells an SHP block with 4.125 bore and 350 mains, but it's closer to $2200 , but seems like a really sweet block to start from. I've been leaning towards building a 400 for my old camaro and this video is really helping push me in that direction.
