From the 1960s-1970s, Richard Petty was the standard driver on the racetrack. He earned 200 wins, 7 NASCAR Championships, and is easily one of NASCAR’s all time greats behind the wheel. When you look at more recent times, however, the #43 has been more of a Legacy Ride struggling to crack the top 20 most weekends. So today, we look at the Misfortunate Legacy of the 43 AFTER Richard Petty, and how the team has struggled with Bubba Wallace, Bobby Labonte, and others behind the wheel

A couple disclaimers 1. Petty’s #43 is a Misfortunate Legacy over the past 3 decades. The title caused some confusion, and I would suggest watching the video before coming to a conclusion. 2. I forgot to mention Medallion Bank is involved/co-owners of the race team. With that said, the company is still in murky waters going forward 3. Richard Petty won 192 of his 200 races in the 43 car

It was a career cut short by tragedy and you think that Adam is garbage after his death? Please, Kyle Busch was driving shit when he was at the #84 of Hendrick Motorsports when he was 19 (same age as Adam) in 2004, I wouldn't call him garbage because he was still learning for experience and consistency. That's why he got in the flagship #5 car and got four wins for Rick Hendrick during three seasons with Hendrick Motorsports from 2005 to 2007. You wouldn't understand at the time how PE was struggling at the time when 2000 rolled around even if Adam was still alive.

2018 was a tough year for multiple reasons. Losing a long time big sponsor, switching to a new manufacturer that was clearly the worst of the season in 2018, and on top of that having a rookie take the car got the car to struggle. I’m very scared for the future of the #43 and Richard Petty motorsports. But 1 top 5 and 3 top 10’s wasn’t all that bad compared too years past for the #43.

Respectfully disagree. Petty was still in control of the team, he just didn't drive any more. Richard Childress did the same thing when he stepped out of the 3 car before Dale Earnhardt drove it. The problem is what happens when numbers start to be retired? Would the 3 be forever mothballed because it was associated with Dale Earnhardt, or the 24 with Jeff Gordon? Earnhardt drove other numbers, including the 2 and the 15... do they get retired too? It just sets up a slippery slope effect if numbers start being retired. That said, I'd like to see a gentleman's agreement with the 43 that no one would use that number, at least for a long time (assuming NASCAR survives for a long time...). If any number in the sport deserves some consideration for an unofficial retirement, it's definitely the 43. Just my thoughts.

WHY WONT ANYONE SAY WINSTON CUP? Even Jeff Gordon didn't say it when he was inducted into the Hall of Fame. In 1984 it was Winston Cup. Like Jeff said at his induction ceremony "Can't do this without the sponsors." I think Winston was a great sponsor for NASCAR. John Andretti was really shafted by Petty Enterprises. First was when Kyle decided to return to PE, and as such depleted resources for the 43 car. Second Adam Petty was being groomed for a car at Petty, making them a three car team. Third John spent the 2000 season driving a Pontiac, with almost no support as the team was switching to Dodge. Fourth John spent much of 2000 acting as a test driver getting the Intrepid ready for it's 2001 debut. Fifth when Adam died, it was a gut punch to the family, which they never truly recovered from. Finally after having to swallow all that was happening at PE, and being a loyal soldier, we was released in the middle of the 2003 season. John gave a lot more to Petty Enterprises than he ever got back from them. However John being John never complained about the raw deal he got, and had nothing but praise, up until his death. RIP to my favorite driver of the 1990's and early 2000's.

Richard should have retired right after the 200th win. He could have went out on top. It was excruciating, especially after 1987, to see him become a has been. Sadly, race drivers are the only ones who dont get it. They believe that next win is right around the corner. Richards last race, and the way he ended up that day at Atlanta in 92, is still cringworthy. Darrell Waltrip ended up the same way. Waltrips "Victory tour" 2000 was an embarrassment. Drivers, and teams, have their time, but that time has an end. The 43 team had their day in the sun, but they really peaked in 1975. 1979 was a gift from God to the Pettys. After 79, it was a slow painful ride downhill. Save for a bright spot here and there. I honestly dont think that they ever recovered from that cheating scandle in 83.

Sadly Nascar has become a sport of a select premium teams. If you are not a part of Stewart-Hass, Joe Gibbs Racing, Hendrick Motorsports, or Team Penske you are on the outside looking in. Ganassi Racing is so so (as I think Kyle Larson would be a championship driver if he drove for one of the four teams listed above. Nascar is about the have and have nots and any team I have not listed above is pretty much a have not in the sport. This includes RPM and the likes of Roush-Fenway, JTG, RCR, and all the other teams that place in the 18th to 30th place week in and week out. That doesn't include the 31st to 40th place cars that essentially fill the fields out each week. Sad to say, I don't see RPM gaining any ground on the current successful team owners in the sport.

Its getting back to where Cup was back in the mid-60's thru the 70's. The same 5 guys winning the vast majority of the races in a season the only difference is its going to be 4 to 5 teams with most of their drivers winning at least one race and competing in the Chase.

Allmendinger's fall Dover race at 2010 and Almirola's fall Kansas race in 2012 were probably the only times the 43 car was the best in the field. Unfortunately, both would have tire issues although at least Allmendinger would come back from 2 down to get a Top 10. Watching Almirola hit the wall after working his way back twice was just brutal.

The #44 looked weird during all of the 1993 season. It would have been fine to keep the car numbered 43, though Rick Wilson had a pretty ugly season in '93. The sting would have gone away with Bobby Hamilton's good performance, and John Andretti kept the team respectable for a couple of years before the 2000s when Petty Enterprises started to fall further. Also, didn't AJ Allmendinger dominate the Fall Dover race in 2010? Almirola's Kansas run in 2012 was the best that team had looked in a couple of years, anyway.

Richard Petty ALMOST hired Kurt Busch in 2012, but Kurt Busch said the contract was so atrocious he had no choice but to turn it down, I'm guessing they wanted to give him something like start-and-park pay, south of $5 million, for sure, for a driver that pretty much commands a salary of $10M wherever he goes. I wonder what could have been if RPM met Kurt Busch's salary standards though, I mean, he carried a 30th place car like the #51 to top 10s and top 15 finishes, maybe he could've done a lot of great things for RPM if he drove for them for a few years, but the world may never know (or will they? the whole Chevy partnership and Chastain licking his chops for that #1 ride might have Kurt hunting again, a Monster Energy #43, while unlikely, is certainly possible).
@atlfan48
@atlfan48 5 жыл бұрын
Always heard that episode caused Loomis to depart. Don't think the possibility of Kurt was ever real. Smithfield wanted AA and that was it. Hiring Kurt would have cost RPM the Smithfield money. Therefore I don't think Busch was ever an option. You have to remember KuB had a lot of baggage at that time. He was kryptonite to sponsors.

Maybe what Petty Enterprises what is now Richard Petty Motorsports needs is a fresh start. Do what Gene Haas did. Partner with a driver that can win, and get their cars from an organization with a proven ability to win on the track such as Hendrick Motorsports. Chassis, Engines and Engineering support. That should help a ton. But finding the right driver is a little hard to get these days.
@KK-ex5zu

That's not a bad idea for Richard Petty if he still wants to keep going in NASCAR. He should've talked to and made Kurt Busch Co-Owner and driver of the 43 after Kurt left Stewart-Haas before Kurt signed on with Ganassi. Granted he's only won one Cup Championship with Roush back in "03 but the man is a proven winner of races. Kurt has had some serious ups and downs and low points in his career. He also has bounced around from team to team every few years after leaving Penske. But one thing has always been a constant, when Kurt sticks with any team long enough he eventually starts winning races and that's the kind of driver RPM needs to turn the organization around!

You forgot a major factor, George Gillett.. He left the teams he bought and merged with in financial ruin meaning Evernham Motorsports and Petty Enterprise. It got so bad that Roush would not deliver cars and engines until bills where paid in advance so the team didn't know if they where racing or not. Richard Petty is a minority owner of this team, I believe the Medallion Bank is the majority owner. This iconic team is where it is because Richard Petty hung on too long to the point that it was too far behind to catch up......

Rename Richard Petty Motorsports with Germain. 3.) Richard Childress Racing. Rename Petty-Childress Racing I believe John Menard could also merge with either team for backing. Here is some ideas. Petty Ganassi Racing: Switch numbers with Stewart Haas. #41 - Kurt Busch- Monster Energy #42 - Bubba Wallace - McDonalds #43 - Erik Jones- Stanley/DeWalt Richard Petty Motorsports with Germain: #13 - Ty Dillon - GIECO #23 - Daniel Suarez - Arris #43 - Daniel Hemric - Menard’s Petty Childress Racing: #3 - Austin Dillon - Bass Pro Shops #43 - Tyler Reddick - Caterpillar

It's worth noting that one of the reasons Richard Petty won seven championships was that the NASCAR schedule featured many more races in a season and Petty was one of the first drivers to run a full schedule. Back then the championship was won by an accumulation of points, and though Petty won a lot of races, he actually didn't have to win that many to have clinched the prize. Obviously after a couple of championships this way, other drivers started running full or near-full schedules. Ironically, Petty's most recognized rival, David Pearson, often didn't run full schedules even when others did. I'm old enough to remember those two racing each other; I always liked Pearson more as I think he was a more calculating and strategic driver. I can't help but wonder that if Bubba can keep the 43 car long enough that he might be able to move to greener pastures. The move to Stewart-Haas has been a real boon for Aric Almirola as he's now in top level equipment and has already shown what he's really capable of. And who knows, maybe the addition of Daniel Suarez to that team will give Aric a chance to improve his Spanish for his next visit to family in Cuba. Give Bubba a couple more years at RPM and he could be a decent driver too. Finally, pretty much any team Petty were to merge with would end up being the death knell of the Petty name. Richard Childress is hardly going to give up the name of his team in favor of Petty, a team that hasn't won a championship since 1979, especially as he began the team as a driver in his own right. The team might start out as Childress-Petty, but it would end up being absorbed into Childress, with only the 43 remaining. This happened when Chip Ganassi merged with DEI, and now all that's left of DEI is the number 1 on the car. Petty won't survive a merger, especially as Richard is now in his 80s and won't be around forever. I'd rather see Petty merge and be absorbed with someone else to see the legacy continue, but Petty is never going to recover its past glory. Maybe the team should be shut down; though no numbers are ever retired, I doubt anyone else would use that number out of respect if such intentions were stated. Perhaps the team should have been disbanded a long time ago.

Oh boy… they didn’t hire Bobby labonte. Richard, Kyle, and sponsors with the team all agree about bringing in a driver to race the full season and evaluate the equipment the same time. Bobby labonte. It wasn’t hire him. It was an agreement based on a handshake, you help me I help you. Bobby just left Gibbs and still had the competition spirit. And he lifted the petty team with his performance.

Ironically, the #43 that was drove by the Fernando Poe Jr. Of NASCAR, Richard Petty, had become a mediocre team. I'm hoping that Richard Petty Motorsports would form an alliance with Toyota and Joe Gibbs Racing in cooperation with TRD and Toyota Gazoo Racing, if the GR Supra contests in the NASCAR Cup Series in 2021, the year the Gen-7 car arrives, and hopefully John Hunter Nemechek could bring back the #43's glory days by the next decade of the 21st century
