This year I decided to do things a little differently. Rather than two separate top 10 lists looking at my Best and Worst Rap albums of the year, I decided instead to cover my 5 BEST and 5 WORST rap albums all in one video. 2023 wasn't exactly the most exciting year in terms of new album drops for me, some years are just like that, but I'm very happy with how these lists turned out. So with that being said, this is CDTVProductions and I hope you enjoy :)

What really gets me about it the most is how a lot of his fans moan about how rap music lacks any sort of “lyrical or deep content” and is just the same shit over and over and yet never complain when Tom writes these types of political songs in the same boring way all the time and shovels them out quite frequently and just blur together so easily. Shits hilarious and sad at the same time

if you didn't listen to it already I would HIGHLY recommend Maps by Billy Woods and Kenny segal it was easily one the highlight rap albums of last year for me and got me into billy woods' discography. He a super unique lyricist with an almost spoken word flow at times and incredibly personal and metaphorical lyrics that helps him get his thoughts across and paint really vivid imagery perfectly. Also the production from kenny segal is subtle yet really powerful.

I'm so happy that I got into JPEG and Danny after listening to SCARING THE HOES because these two literally changed my view on rap/music in general, especially since these two made my year more exciting than it was before with the album, their DLC EP, and Danny's "Quaranta". I can't wait to see them grow even more individually and as a duo in the near future

This year was very dry for Hip-hop imo, if you take into account other genre releases, it’s a pretty solid year overall. This is my top 15 albums, regardless of genre from 2023. 1. 10000 Gecs by 100 gecs 2. the record by boygenius 3. Desire, I Want To Turn Into You by Caroline Polachek 4. Scaring The Hoes by JPEGMAFIA and Danny Brown 5. This is Why by Paramore 6. Let’s Start Here by Lil Yachty 7. The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We by Mitski 8. Zach Bryan by Zach Bryan 9. Yea I like this idea! Especially since like this year(or last year I guess) was not amazing. At least for me, I loved The Estate Sale and even tho it’s a not an actual rap album, Teezo Touchdown’s How Do You Sleep at Night was amazing. Even albums I was hyped for like Utopia by Travis and Struggler by Genesis Owusu kinda disappointed me. Utopia, Struggler, Jackman and Scaring the Hoes just did nothing for me. So the worst album of the year? Idk whatever album Tom Macdonald dropped.

I love Scaring the Hoes as well. Just curious if you have any thoughts on Quaranta yet which I think is a great companion piece to XXX. Also partial to Earl Sweatshirt and Voir Dire but not sure if you like him because he seems like an acquired taste at this point. As a fan of Danny Brown, I am happy he had such a great year. I also think the podcast is a favorite if you haven't given that a peek.

Earl is very specific rapper. I see a lot of people like him and call him the best of OddFuture But his flow is unbearable sorry. My fav from Voir Dire was Mancala. Simply because of great instrumentals and Vince verse I really like storytelling by old Earl but he has nothing to fascinate anymore

I think what makes let’s start here is great is that he took a page out of tame Impala’s book, who hasn’t dropped a bad album yet. Tame did something similar when just as he was catching the eyes of all music listeners, he boldly led off his third album, currents, with the 8 minute long let it happen which has the same structure as black Seminole and ended up being considered his best work by nearly all of his fans. Now we just gotta wait for yachty and tame to collab again

An Album i would seriously recommend is Set in Stone by CORNERSTONEZ. They are a new rap collective consisting of Samad Savage, Blaze the Rebel, J.1.Da, and Solis. It is a lyrical masterpeice in my opinion with great instumentalization

I feel like Integrated Tech Solutions (ITS) by Aesop Rock deserves a lot more respect. I understand that most people haven’t heard of the album but MY GOD is it good, it’s up there with Scaring the Hoes for me. (Although that might be a hot take, idk) either way, LISTEN TO IT!!!

Definitely check out Generational Curse by ICECOLDBISHOP, a wide array of vocals and creative flows coupled with raw lyrics, makes you wonder if there's a feature sometimes or not, a promising artist from the West Coast.

I personally liked Inglorious Basterd over College Park, and Magic 2 over Magic 3 among the projects these two released this year, but the very fact you included these two rappers who are often overlooked these days makes my respect for you go over the roof! Too long of an album, bloated, lots of the songs meld together that make it more boring than cohesive. It’s like an album that could be maybe a solid 32 minutes if he focused more on just a few solid songs instead of dropping everything he makes
