Because the money is deducted when it is paid out. The equation is plan assets at end of year less plan assets at beginning of year less contributions plus benefits paid. So, the return on plan assets here is 5,000 - 4,200 - 200 + 350 = 950 In simple addition/subtraction form 4,200 Beginning balance +200 contributions - 350 benefits paid ? Return = 5,000 So, 5,000 - 4,200 - 200 + 350 Return = 950
