Instead of wasting time at the gym, why can't our built environment encourage this kind physical activity (in the US)? We're encouraged to drive everywhere because it's all highways and sprawl.

You have your cause and effect reversed; it's all highways and sprawl because we drive everywhere. In cities where there was a huge population pre-automobile, older parts of town are generally built in a manner that is friendlier to foot traffic. :)

nope. It's because Paris is temperate weather year round... most of the US is too hot half the year and too cold the other half... with the lucky ones getting a decent month in fall or spring that has us crawl out of our shells... we all look outside.. think... i'll walk... go outside... attacked by bugs that bite and heat... nope... walks back inside.
