I never heard about frames and sharp being industry standards. The first time I hear it is here. And I have been on some film sets. Frame and Sharp is done before the camera rolling and shouldn't need any kind of anouncement, plus you are not losing time on shot. Imagine you'd be filming on actual analog roll. You'd be blasting out thousands of dollars by the second passing. I agree on many other things but one thing I wouldn't really agree on is staying glued to the screen and playback watching to figure out how it is going to work. Here the confidence shows in the director and his way of working. Tarantino as an example (and I do not like his films) directs actor and while shooting he is as near to the actors as he can get. The shot and all he has seen and planned with his DP so he can concentrate entirely on the actors. There is no particular set of rules of what to do first in general. It is not always blocking then lights and so on so on. Sometimes an entire scene changes during the shooting due to problems arising and solving them. In the end a confident and competent director is also someone who can improvise on the fly. Shot List very very important. Without that nothing works and all falls apart. I just finished my shotlist for my next music video I am shooting on monday. It is a lot of work and organizing involved. Most important aspect that I would have added in the video is: For a confident director you need to believe in your vision and trust that what you have planned works out.

1. PICTURES UP 2. ROLL SOUND 3. ROLL CAMERA 5. ACTION Always roll sound first, Filmstock is expensive. I know you are shooting digital but still not great idea to fill up your cards and hardrives with wasted time waiting for sound to speed and everyone to settle in to the scene.

I'd say most directors should ideally not need to be putting in as much as half the effort into every department's work. If we can trust the skills of our team members it's probably best if they are encouraged to take charge of their role, allowing the director to be like the conductor of an orchestra. But I've definitely had to be the all-controlling director in every aspect of short films in the past, when I didn't have enough skilled collaborators I could reply on to share the load. But directing styles will vary, based on the scale of a project and the attitude of a director.

We also may sometimes choose blocking based on the available lighting.
