Man this is simply the best and most charitable Ford small block build content on all of KZfaq. If I had the slightest clue on how to do this stuff to EFI systems on my 94 lincoln then I’d have the engine apart in my friend’s garage within the hour.

150,000 mile stock 92 5.0, 62mm Hellion kit with 42 lb injectors, a Cobra intake, 1.7 rockers and a single 3.5 inch exhaust. It make 444.6 HP at 4,800 rpm and 537.8 lb/ft of torque at 4,000 rpms to the wheels. It lasted for 6 years before the oil pressure started to lay over due to bearing wear. That was a fun combination.

Wow, that turbo setup would have taken ages to assemble, no wonder you ran out of tuning time. As always, your videos are fabulous, thanks for all your hard work, I can’t imagine how many people you have saved from making up dud combinations. Luv the baby Boss, that might be my next build, I’ve never seen one in the flesh, no idea what cars they were ever fitted to, we usually just went 5.8 Boss. G’day from down under.

Funny, i just had this conversation above. I have owned a factory turbo car, installed on a 2.3 litre OHC Ford 4 cylinder, the one from Cologne the Cossies used to love dearly. It was fun in some places, laggy in other with a Ford SVO intercooler mounted in its grill (there was a lot of plumbing from T3 turbo to intercooler to intake manifold). Here in the states, its not uncommon for a common lad to find a turbo off a diesel pickup truck, feed it into a carburator (the venturi effect cools the incoming charge like a basic intercooler), and then hope the combination works. Sadly a lot of lads pick up a factory turbo car, and play Einstein with it and end up with something very peaky in power. Those who understand a turbo and its sundries, and have the ability to get it all tuned, can have an amazing machine. Everyone else gets a pile of parts that looks amazing, but...they should have bought a bigger engine displacement and went from there.

Just for fun or budgetary issues: Les Schmader cleaned up my '70 B302 heads...no enlarging or polishing...and the numbers are interesting when comparing to the CHI #s as prepped by Dr. J's. For whatever reason, Les didn't check the flow below .200 lift. One thing different is that I went with slightly smaller intake valves than stock...2.125 vs normal 2.19...just to see if there was any difference due to potentially less shrouding. Didn't seem to change anything significantly that I could tell. @ Lift Int Exh .200 158 105 .300 220 154 .400 264 189 .500 295 205 .600 320 210 .700 335 212 The velocity is surely much better on the CHIs, and the exhaust flow is significantly "better", but if you have some old big port/big valve canted valve Ford heads, it takes very little in the way of cleanup to make those iron lumps flow pretty well. And it would be budget friendly to just clean out casting ridges and flash rather than buy some pricey aftermarket heads, as long as the originals didn't need serious work or all-new everything.

he did extensive work on the stock Boss 302 heads if these flow numbers are accurate (stock Boss heads flow 275 cfm)
@Zekais
@Zekais 3 жыл бұрын
@@richardholdener1727 I doubt he lied to me, so I'll continue to believe what Les told me he did and charged me for. He achieved similar (max flow, though the lesser numbers have some interesting differences) results with a set of PC 3V heads, but worked them a little harder and charged more for them, whether because of less volume in the ports or poorer routing/casting I don't know. Normal 2.19 intake valves in them, and as-cast they flowed slightly "worse" than iron b302 or 351c heads; right at 270I 170E max. .200 127 119 .300 180 134 .400 227 166 .500 280 195 .600 312 210 .700 333 220 Would have been nice to know what the velocity values were, but he was mainly a circle-track cylinder head guru, so maybe didn't feel it worthwhile to test air speed.

I dont know but have you done any back to back testing with Roller VS Flat tappet cams with equal advertised duration to compare roller profile gains? Perhaps a thought for another series?
@albertgaspar627
@albertgaspar627 3 жыл бұрын
i suspect the real gain is a loss of friction. where the roller shines, is it can run a far steeper cam lobe than the bucket lifter. running a steeper lobe means it can zing that valve to full lift sooner, so you can reduce the duration it takes to get a flat tappet cam to full lift and then add on the duration it takes to hold it there for max airflow, in order to get the full cam duration and all the benefits and issues of that long a duration. another fun trick is to work on the airflow at low valve lift. increase it with a multi angle valve job, and you help both valves flow more during the overlap period...which means you can decrease overlap if you need to for emissions, or leave it and enjoy more air coming in to push out exhaust.

My buddy did a 408W with good inline valve heads (AFR 205s) and an extremely mild sounding cam (recommended and ground by CamResearch). Has decent headers, AirGap intake with ProSystems carb and good compression (10.7). If I could paste the dyno sheet, I would, but failing that: 467 ft lbs @3,000; max 513 ft lbs @ 3,700 & 3,800; 500 ft lbs or more from 3,500 through 4,600. 489.X hp basically from 5,700 through 6100. What I like is that it had good vacuum (18 inches if I remember rightly) and I was very impressed that it showed 100% or better volumetric efficiency from 3400-3500 RPM through 6000-6100. The car is finally just about done, so he will finally get to feel it tomorrow. I will be in formation with him, and am almost as eager to see and hear it rolling in rejuvenated form as he is.

I'm actually very impressed with the HP/l on that BOSS engine. You bested 100HP/l, beating BMW. Do you think you could have gone over 600HP with that motor and a different cam with a HP peak at 8,000 rpm? That would have equaled Honda's best specific output of 120HP/l.

Years and years ago, the Boss 302s (310 CID usually) that Roush, Lozano Bros. and others built and sold were 630HP out of the crate. Probably at more than 8,000RPM, but I just can't remember specifically. 35 years or so later, with the better, more widely availabe and less expensive parts we have access to, a 600HP B302 should be no problem for a good builder. Even more from really good builders who are familiar with the canted-valve Fords.

@@richardholdener1727 I don’t necessarily want or need a .700” lift cam, I was just asking what’s the highest lift one can go before sacrificing daily driven reliability.

So did you test 210 vs 225 heads on this engine, or is the idea that the "210cc and 225cc heads make identical hp" an assumption based on different engines dyno'd in the past? Unless the 210 and the 225cc heads actually have the same cc runner, you can't assume that they are going to make identical power on every engine. Doesn't matter how many you've dyno'd and gotten that result, physics tells us this isn't possible on every engine.

they made exactly the same power curve when run back to back on the same motor on the same day

@@richardholdener1727 the fact that they did so on a completely different engine doesn't mean anything in reference to this engine. It just likely means the other engine didn't need the advantage of the larger ones and the port velocity was good enough due to them being manufactured by a company that didn't start doing this yesterday, that the larger, unneeded cylinder head still made power despite being so.

Woodchucks make far more power than squirrels, and badgers are above the woodchucks, but they are temperamental.

Thump Er you can't include badgers as they are canted valve whereas the woodchucks and squirrels are inline. Apples to apples ok? Now beavers, well damn, now we're talking big blocks!
