@arborcidal maniac I am pretty sure the 85 through 90 had a little more compression for the Honda they detuned them a bit not much in 91 and after...but you might want to check the power valve on the kx because when they gum up they slow down a bit. My 91 kx 500 is ported the carb is bored the motor was built by rex staten it is smooth and super fast...it has smoked everythingive put up against it including my 2015 kx450f.

@arborcidal maniac i agree on the explosive motor or an all out top end ripper but ive been around the bikes for years raced them and seen them at glamis and in the dez and the cr was always a cut and thrust bike with a short snappy powerband not much overrev intil ported accordingly the cr has a steeper rake and is set up for tighter tracks......but make no mistake when you build both of them the kx has a much broader power curve and it also makes more top end power....ask engine builders like mitch from pro circuit or terry varner without a power valve the bike is a one trick pony....I have known many pro riders and none have ever said the kx500 has an inferior power band compared to the cr..the kx 500 has been proven to run all day in baja at speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour. I have owned 3 cr 500a none has ever beat my kx especially if you get past 5th gear the kx always walks away same gearing 14 47

@arborcidal maniac Most mxers will tell you even pros, the point of diminishing returns is around 65 horsepower any more and lap times suffer especially on hardpack breadth of power is where you make speed that is why every racer i have talked to prefers the Kx I like the Cr too on certain tracks but it will tire you out faster..if you are talking top end horsepower the cr is all or nothing when they are built to rev they hit like a ton of bricks and are useless on the track.Hence the four stroke era they are a superior mx engine because they hook up so well...just boring to ride.Team Honda was always testing different cranks on those CRs to get thier power more tractable.I don't know much about hill climbers never seen more than one or two events at De Anza cycle park....those guys were using street bike and snowmobile engines.

@arborcidal maniac my 91 kx has been bulletproof not one issue....oh I forgot the most important thing the kx suspension is light years better that honda jackhammer suspension....i can ride way harder on the kx
