At the bottom of the Champs-Élysées is one of the most luxurious hotels in the world: the Hôtel de Crillon. After lavish refurbishment, this 300-year old monument recently received "Palace" status (a better than five-star classification introduced by the French government in 2010).
To reach this goal, epic renovation works were necessary: A €500 million budget, 4,000 people, including 150 craftsmen, working non-stop over a 4-year period to restore centenary frescoes, woodwork, and tapestries, some of which are classified as historical monuments.
From ceilings covered in feathers to sofas specially designed by Karl Lagerfeld, discover how the Hôtel de Crillon has been reborn under the artistic direction of Aline Asmar d’Amman. Between excitement and apprehension, this film takes us behind the scenes at one of the most beautiful luxury hotels, in the period leading up to its grand re-opening gala.

The biggest (and critical) difference I've seen in all these, hotel renovation docos, is that, PARIS (in comparison to Singapore, India, etc), spend a valuable amount of time on TRAINING their staff to follow a pattern and also, allow their staff to think for themselves, using their own EYE, as opposed to just hiring hundreds of subordinates who are given multiple instructions they cannot keep track of, are afraid to make mistakes, and INSTEAD, they 'pretend to be busy', in fear of being told off like children, preferring to be told to do the exact same thing daily, over and over again, by a hundred 'managers' who don't trust them. Watching this hotel, nurture their staff to OWN their role and work together without fear and are supported to grow, is inspiring. They take absolute care, in the craft, and respect their artisans.

I adore Pascal, the maintenance guy at the end, when he lies on the bed in his hotel room. When he smiles and says, "You shouldn't come here on your own!" Adorable! It brought tears to my eyes! (Not sure if the tears were for him, or for me! I haven't been since pre-Covid! 😕)

Me too! So glad he had that opportunity. If I had the money I would certainly help find a home for him that is more tranquil, less noisy. It saddened me to hear - that hears so much when I am sure at the end of day he would like to come home to some quiet, calm. Afterall, those walls are your security from the rest of the world. Your peace.

This is truly breathtaking! As someone with 25 years in the hospitality industry, (and someone who was educated in and lived in Paris), I found the section on the Butler and housekeeping training (the most important department in a hotel!) very impressive! Yes, Paris has a large Muslim community, but for them to bring a proper prayer mat, Koran AND a compass is an EXCELLENT idea! A great, personalized touch! (Leaving the TV on would never happen bc of eco-friendly ideas these lately. And putting a Yoga mat in the room would only leave the message that they don't get it and are just playing whack a mole. Close, but no cigar)! GREAT Training! Wonderful video!

This restoration is just a do over of what was once an elegant hotel that has been modernized with new furniture and drapes that imitate the elegance it once had. Any top level hotel can offer that.

I admire a young designer and her fortitude, but as stated it’s a luxury that will only be for the mega rich. Provides jobs for talented artisans until finished. In a sense repeating history. In every aspect right down to the workers.

Well I’m proud that a young Lebanese woman headed this entire project. I have met this lady before and all I can say is total class. If she was a he, they would say what z great leader, and since she us a she, they call her a Beatchh. Which just shows the double standard in any culture.

She was being a b, just from minutes listening to her already my blood is boiling at the stupidity. Of course you don't put the bed in middle of the room but contractors have to do real works then only furniture arrangements at last minute but she's treating them like they're stupid. I've worked with this type.

So, as of 2018 (when the documentary was made), the new Crillon is not classified as a 6-star Palace hotel? I would've thought it would automatically qualify for that category.

The problem lies in this irritating trend (that just never seems to end) of combining modern and minimal, and with only white and grey colours. You lose all sense of luxury, style, colour, character and soul as a result, and might as well be living in the Starship Enterprise or a thirty dollar room that could be anywhere. Where do millennial designers go to school - The Jetsons School of Art? Heartbreaking and not worth the price.

People are saying amazing things about the decor but to me it's mehh, other hotels did much better jobs. This is the result of not getting the best designs but by genitals.

Well said. The prevalence of grey dates the renovation. From 2023, it looks stuck in 2010.
