I actually own a Vetterli and do shoot it. As well as 4 other Carcanos. As for loading for my Vetterli, I have a very simple recipe. Full load of Trail Boss and a cast 0.268 160gr bullet. Chrono at just over 1300 fps and very light recoil and surprisingly accurate. I will NEVER shoot a jacketed bullet out of mine. Each to there own, but airing on the side of caution usually prolongs lifespan. Both me and gun. Steinel ammo sell bullets on their website.

.264 will work, though not great. if Possible .264 round nose often works best, as it will have more bearing area.

Thanx for pointing out the difference in diameter of the bullets used in 6.5mm Carcano and 6.5mm Creedmoor. I have had trouble finding .268" dimeter bullets, not because they aren't made, but because they are not always in stock. I buy it when I can, when it is in stock, and when I'm already ordering other stuff.

just want to point out that the 7.62x54 R has been in active service with only slight variations from 1895, and is still in active service today.

I had the Calvary model which is your short one. I didnt reload for this one i just used PMC. I think that was the brand it was 14 yrs ago. Had a had time finding the e bloc style clip for the rifle. My accuracy was off bad and bullets tumbled. I sold my example, wish i kept it just for collection. Looking forward to your range trip

You can buy decapper/expander pins in any size. Many dies, like 7.62X39 & 7.62X54R, will come with a .308 and a .310 or .311. I also swap pins between forming dies if I'm using a nonstandard bullet, such as a .308 or .310 in the 7.7X58 or 303 British. Older reloading manuals have reduced power loads for the 6.5 using IMR-4198 & SR 4759. Velocities 1600-1900 fps. I use reduced power loads in several milsurp calibers. Usually have to raise the sights to 300 meters to hit a 100 yards.

Thanks for the info. I’ve always wondered why the 6.5 creed was made when the carcano is so similar. Seems needlessly complicated. Has anyone found a spreadsheet on vetterli powder charge loads? I’m wanting to load for mine but that c&r video did sketch me out a bit.

While I've never loaded any ammunition myself, let alone for an older cartridge design, it would seem to me that a wax or lead slug cast to the actual measured bore dimensions of your particular rifle would be a better bet for the Vetterly (sp?) than the smaller diameter jacketed bullets. Obviously, you don't want to use an excessive powder charge, but a projectile with more give should obturate better and provide more uniform pressure curves.

Like others have said: Thanks for pointing out the difference. I also own 3: a Vitteli, a Carbine and a rifle. The brass I have is Starline, not PPU. I was considering, given the Vittelli loading,... "Horror! " ... Black powder for a well like a fire form. Heck I donno. Post a vid of your results. Good vid sir....Happy Trails..

My main takeaway from this video is that somebody makes a cartridge box for 7.5 Swiss that doubles as a stripper clip.

These ones I've got has got to round nose bolt in it is them still safe to shoot in that rifle

They should be sage to fire from your rifle. The round nose projectiles us what they were when the rifle was designed. You shouldn't have any issues firing those rounds out of your rifle.

6.5 carcano reloader here. My collection of carcanos is near identical to yours, exept i have an M41 long rifle instead of an M91. I reload for the vetterli and have found that, yes, you should avoid .268 jacketed bullets for the vetterli, shooting cast .268 is safe as long as your using a nice, low power charge. I know .268 bullet molds are expensive and i didn't want to spent the price of the gun on a mold, so what i did was take a lee .277 mold and get a lee breach lock bullet sizer in .268 and run it through that. Cast, powder coat, Size, boom, perfect .268 bullets for your vetterli. Ive run close to 50+- rounds of these cast loads through my 1882 vetterli and they shoot pretty good (got some shooting of it on my channel), my groups could be tighter bit it being a 140+ y/o gun and with weird sights with weird ammo im happy with there results. Love seeing Carcano discourse online but their is alot of fuddlore and misconceptions about the vetterli, especially with the C&Rrsenal video. As long as you find a load that is soft on the gun and is safe, your gun is in good condition and your running the right bullet, the vetterli is a nice shooter.

@@randalbeecroft790 weird, i swear i sent a reply to this yesterday but ig it didn't send. ig ill just retype it oof The two loads i use are very light gallery loads, my first one is 1: 135gr cast bullet over 10gr Alliant unique powder 2: 135gr cast bullet over 5gr Titegroup powder. both loads seating depth doesn't matter too much as long as its not a chode lol. The titegroup load works great in my newest vetterli, but that's cause I haven't tested it in the other. I make my bullets by casting .277 bullets with a lee mold, powder coating them, then using a .268 bullet sizer to size them down to prefect size. Obviously your accuracy depends on the condition of your barrel, I was lucky to have both of my vetterli's with mirror bright bores, so my control groups are pretty good. the recoil is near nonexistent and close to hearing safe where I shoot obligatory safety warnings: I'm not responsible for what you do with this information, make sure you check your gun to see if its safe to shoot. FranticAlmond2 in the comments here has a vid on how to check if the bolt is nice and tight in the receiver. check your bold handle collar for cracks. hope this helps.

5744 is a good powder choice for 6.5 Carcano for the Vetterli. I use Hornady’s 140-grain .264” BTHP jacketed bullet over 18.0 grains of 5744 for a load that averages around 1,750 FPS and is very pleasant to shoot. I’ve shot 17 different Vetterlis chambered in 6.5 Carcano without ever running into any problems. As long as you are hotrodding the crap out of your loads, you should be good with a reasonable reduced charge.

Man, if I were you I would rectify your video from 8.57 to avoid any kind of legal action from PPU. C&Rsenal didn't use PPU'S .268 but Hornady's .268, which are quite problematic bullets and thus discontinued from production. We're going to do some long-term trials with PPU's .268 in Vetterlis but I would say that, compared to Hornady's squibs, they will work more than fine with some decent loads.

I didn't say they used the PPU just that they used the larger sized 6.5.

@@deuceandguns yeah but you say that while shaking in front of the camera a box of PPU .268 bullets, not really good publicity. Also, since you never mentioned Hornady's, people are gonna imply that these PPU bullets are responsible for C&Rsenal incident.

I love yhe 6.5x52 carcano. Its my favorite rifle if all time. Ive done extensive research in them and can tell you just aniut anytjing you want to know. My favorite carrcano rifle was made by terni in the years 1917 and 1918. They had dual twist rate barrels and are very good at firing extreme long distances. Awesome video. Keep up the good work.
