Now that you see Project Based Learning as a great instructional model for your learners, how do you get started? Many new educators align with the ‘why’ of Project Based Learning, but then get intimidated when it comes to the first day and initial implementation.
The 6 Steps of PBL are designed to give you a structure to work within during your PBL Unit. When you first engage in an authentic learning experience with your learners, it can be open ended and intimidating. These 6 Steps will help you and your learners know where you are at in the process and where you are going.

Step 1 - Define the Problem
Step 2 - Solution Criteria
Step 3 - Solution Research
Step 4 - Pick a Solution
Step 5 - Create, Run, and Inspect Solution
Step 6 - Reflect on Solution
Reflection should happen throughout the PBL unit while listening to our learners’ needs. We also want to have a capstone reflection time where we can celebrate the great work and learning that has happened. Find a few of your favorite reflection activities/protocols that help involve ALL of your learners. Some learners want to talk a lot, but some don’t.
A protocol in groups and as individuals can help you get a good idea of how your PBL unit went. Your learners want to give their voice, but often they are not asked. Find at least one piece of reflection that you can act on and let your learners know that your are taking their suggestions. This will give your learners more incentive to give more of their voice, and you start to build a culture of empowerment.
