Here is my absolute favorite setup for short-term, outdoor events. Tried and true, it's durable, portable, and visually-appealing. I would love to know what must-have's you have in your basic setup!
You can find any of these items at the following affiliate links:
Directors Chair: amzn.to/2plrx5q
Beach Umbrella: amzn.to/2nNaloQ
Collapsible Wagon: amzn.to/2oxhpWC
A-frame Signboard: amzn.to/2ph9Tj6
Folding Stool: amzn.to/2nS9YJE
Folding Table: amzn.to/2ot1Cs0
***A Word of Caution: Make sure you protect your hands and fingers when learning how to open and shut new equipment. An injury to the finger may be a simple wound for most people, but for a face painter it can be agonizing. Consider using a pair of latex gardening gloves for setup and takedown.

Thank you for the great recommendation for the wagon! I ordered one and the chair and stool combo. That wagon is fantastic! Thank you so much for your wonderful explanations and how-to's! I absolutely love the idea of the director's chair so the kids can lean their head back. I have such problems with kids looking all over and it making it impossible to do a straight line. I'll have to look into that. Could you give a bit of insight for one of my biggest problems... I have issues every time I paint where the kids don't respect my space, are constantly bumping my arms or hitting me in the head, me constantly telling them to back up off the table, usually I have an accident every time because the kids are rambunctious and pull things off on the floor. I did have a good idea for giving them a coin with a number on it so we know who's next because I got tired of hearing arguing over that. I even bought a sign that says " line starts here" And literally it went unnoticed. I don't face paint for a living just on the side, as I am a fine Art painter and muralist, So I don't have everything down to a science yet. I have drawn lines in chalk, I have tried moving chairs in the way so that kids stand or sit behind, and I have a lot of them that just want to watch so that's why they accidentally bump me and mess around. It makes me very nervous to have to continuously turn around and remind them to leave my area and stand somewhere else. So any advice you can give me on that would be so helpful! Thank you, love your work.
@fairyfox
@fairyfox 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Keri, that sounds maddening, and I have so been there. Having the kids close their eyes while you paint can really help them sit still. As for the other kids--this might sound harsh, but you are the boss and don't be afraid to assert that. You can do it kindly and say, "when someone steps inside my magic circle, I have to stop painting," and even if you have to wait a few minutes for them to back up on their own, they always will. Good luck! I think Amy C. had some ideas for this kind of thing in her comment as well.
@kerisparenga
@kerisparenga 4 жыл бұрын
@@fairyfox Yes you're right We are the boss. I'm sure that the kids can read my happy go-lucky attitude and take advantage of that. Kids will do whatever they want until they're told not to. I like the idea of saying the magic circle. It just sounds a lot nicer. The last party I was at I literally got knocked in the head with a sword. And just had to keep on painting lol. I taught my children a little better than that. I appreciate you messaging me back. Have a wonderful day!

Do you find the weight of the umbrella tips the chair at all? Particularly if it's windy?
@fairyfox
@fairyfox 4 жыл бұрын
Yes! if it is windy. If it isn't there are no problems. You can add sand bag weights to the bottom chair and then it is quite stable. If a kid (or yourself) is in the chair then not at all. But it does keep me from leaving my station to wander around on slow days! hahaha

@fairyfox
@fairyfox 4 жыл бұрын
Great question! The kid in the chair (or me if it is slow) is plenty of weight. For extra support, there is a low bar on both sides that work great for a sand bag (just take a reusable bag, put a gallon bag of sand in it, and sew across the top). They have handles for carrying and can make your chair very stable.

I haven't ever used one, although I have worked with painters who love them. They don't appeal to me for several reasons: they are too large and heavy for the size kit I like to bring, they would block my view when opened, they don't leave a comfortable place for a tip jar, and the potential for them to close unexpectedly would really stress me out!

This was awesome! Thank you so much Laura! I like the folding stool but I mostly stand too. I also use a director's chair. I typically use a 10x10 tent but I don't have a quick set up shorter times. Most of my short gigs are indoors or the client already has a shelter. For those with pet peeves for the touchy feely kiddos, after many years I decided to invest in the following set! Seems a bit outrageous but it has been a lifesaver! They break down & are lightweight. I use a folding wagon to transport. I rope it around my area & have never had another problem with kids touching my paint or passive parents allowing them to. Even just using or purchasing 2 posts helps to establish a "line". Be sure to get the sign adaptors too! Here's the link *PLUS 2 sign adaptors from the same site. www.crowdcontrolwarehouse.com/collections/plastic-post-stanchions/products/light-duty-plastic-stanchion-posts-and-chain-kit-with-6-posts-and-50-ft-of-chain-in-your-choice-of-colors?variant=47195843724

Have you ever had the wind blow over the entire director's chair and umbrella combined when no one is sitting in it? I'm not sure what you mean by 'hands at eye level.' Elbows are bent when working, and arms can be raised up and down at the shoulder. Do you mean that the face is at the same level as your hands would be if you extended your arms straight out when standing vs. sitting? I wish you could have backed the camera away from you and the kids in the chair, so that we could see the difference between when you are standing and when you are sitting on the stool. Isn't the face of the older kid just a few inches higher than the really young one? Is it that few inches that you are talking about, which is compensated by how high your body is when standing vs. sitting on the edge of the stool? Don't have you have to move the stool VERY close to the chair and sit on the very edge of it, with your legs straddling the director chair in order to get close enough to the kid's face? It seems to me you'd have to lean way forward when using a stool to reach the face, and that would break my back after awhile for sure.
@fairyfox
@fairyfox 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Joe, Thanks for your questions. I will do my best to explain. Yes, I have had the chair take flight, but there is a cross bar down low that I have sandbagged before and that works great. Often when it is empty I sit in it, so there is rarely a time it isn't weighted down. 'Hands at eye-level' is referring to my eyes, or closer to my nose actually. If I need to raise much higher, I stand. I have the kid sit on the edge of the directors chair, often with a pillow or something filling a lot of the empty space in back. I do straddle their legs, but rarely lean over--protecting your back is key!
@JoeDoe2
@JoeDoe2 4 жыл бұрын
@@fairyfox OK thanks. Have you ever denied a customer the use of your chair due to weight? I learned the hard way when I was working outdoors and another worker, a big guy, decided he wanted to sit in my unoccupied folding chair and he broke it. You could hear the cracking noise of it breaking when he sat down. I was standing right there. Did he offer to pay for it? Of course not. The lesson I learned is to keep my eye on it BEFORE someone comes near it, and stop them before they sit down. If it seems rude, too bad. They haven't put up a deposit, and I can't let them just break my chair and walk away. Those aluminum looking chair/table combos I see face painters use look really lightweight, but flimsy, and definitely with a weight limit that isn't that high. I wonder if it comes with a maximum weight limit in the instructions. And I'll bet most umbrellas, which weren't part of the chair/table combo, are too heavy to be strapped on, but I can see how an umbrella is mandatory in the middle of a hot sun. I have one of those square fold-up canopies that offer plenty of shade, but you are at the mercy of needing someone to help you put it up and take it down, especially taking it down. I hate asking for help from a nearby stranger.
