I thought I'd share a behind the scenes view of this year's Tony Awards from Radio City Music Hall. Working for CBS Network, I've had the privilege of sitting in the broadcast truck with some of the most talented, world class directors. Glenn Weiss is one of the best. Glenn's direction of the last few minutes of the Tony's opening number was unlike anything I've seen in the 13 years I've been with CBS. Stay tuned until the 00:52 mark - He was on FIRE! PS: Glenn was a little busy and unable to give me camera direction, thus the video is shot in portrait mode (vertically) rather than horizontally. I know, I know. You can also follow me on twitter or instagram @rothjodi for the occasional witty comment and behind the scenes photos. ****new split screen video posted. Check it out!

This is some serious talent mixed with decades of experience. Same for the TD and camera ops. The director doesn't need to baby sit camera moves and framing which allows him to focus on other things.Way to be.

Notice how the director needs to say nothing to the camera ops. They know where to go. Sure they rehearse, but not the audience cut aways. This is an outstanding crew...congratulations to them all.

Thank you for sharing this! I'm holding a workshop "Directing Live Television". We work on a much smaller scale compared to this, but the principles are the same, especially that RUSH that ensues when the pace of the show picks up and the director gets loud and the snappy fingers come out! haha! You can tell Glenn and his TD are focused and that they trust each other along with the camera ops. As the director, it's the most amazing feeling when you don't need to call camera shots, so you can just go on autopilot and fall in to that "director's dance". To someone who doesn't work in television, this may look/sound like chaos, but it's the exact opposite. This is what harmony and grace looks like in television.

Amazing! I've never seen a Broadway show and only watch the Tonys for NPH's opening numbers. I loved seeing this part of the background of how it all works after watching the number repeatedly! I am impressed that the camera operators knew who the stars are to get shots of. Are they Broadway fans or are they briefed? I can visualize everyone one in the crew receiving an email with pictures of Broadway stars!

hen I saw this very cool clip, I thought of a story about the legendary Technical Director O. (Orlando) Tamburri. He was working with equally legendary director Dwight Hemion on an Oscar or Emmy telecast and on show day, he placed a jar of Vaseline down on the console. "What's that for?" Hemion asked. "You", 'Tambi' replied..."Nobody snaps their fingers at me!". Well, Glenn - you snap away!

The quick cuts were during the extremely long ovation NPH and everyone onstage (deservedly) got and worked really well to me. I thought the director did a great job keeping the tv audience's attention. And yes, I'm someone who works on Broadway and do hate when directors try to do too much during the actual musical numbers. I thought overall he did a great job at not doing too much camerawork during the actual numbers or at least kept it pretty seamless.

Since my last comment: After many, many years working beauty pageants, the Tonys (and other award shows), numerous specials like the Jerry Lewis MDA Telethon and Peter Pan Live!, and even three game shows (Legends of the Hidden Temple, Gladiators 2000, Majority Rules), Glenn Weiss will be directing the granddaddy of all: *THE OSCARS!!!!!!!!!*

A question: most of the time, he calls out a number and then "take", and they cut on "take". But during the middle section, he stopped saying "take" and just started calling numbers and the camera would switch immediately. How do they know when he wants them to switch immediately?
@js7539
@js7539 Жыл бұрын
They're not cutting on "take". They're cutting on his finger snaps, whenever those happen. I would guess in the faster parts, the switcher operator isn't even switching the preview before cutting to it, just switching the main (program) output directly. It is of course nice to have a second or two of warning as a camera operator but at that point, just assume every camera is live all the time.
