The TVR Cerbera Speed 12 was in the very first Gran Turismo game on the PS1. It was very difficult to drive without the right tune setup for the suspension and gearing because it had enough power to roast the tires through the first 3 gears.

TVR may effectively be gone, but never will be forgotten

Reminds me of a first gen Dodge Viper. The side vents, side exit exhaust, and the rear bumper all bring that car to mind. Not to mention the rawness of it as well.

I remember walking down a street in London in 1992, and encountering the first TVR I had ever seen, parked. The lines of the car took my breath away, just gorgeous. I walked around it and stared for 10 minutes. The feeling is still there.

A huge thank you to whoever thought of having that GT4 intro to the car. If it weren't for the older Gran Turismos, most of my generation wouldn't have known about all of these wonderful cars. Speaking for myself, I always thought that the Speed 12 has always been such a uniquely striking car and I'm so glad it finally got covered on this channel 💕

As a '96 4.2 Cerbera owner, 'normal' seems like kind of a misnomer for such vivid cars, but the Speed 12 truly is in another stratosphere of insanity. It makes Paganis and Koenigseggs look tame. Thank you for showcasing this piece of unobtanium madness, and for delivering a healthy dose of TVR history.

This might be my favorite DriveTribe video that I've seen. There is a true sense of wonder and excitement throughout the whole video. The engine sound is unbelievable and it's incredible to think that they had to turn down the tuning. The video makes it sound like they were close to cracking the 1:1 ratio way before Koenigsegg. I'm seeing this video months after the car found a new home and sold for over 600k pounds. Still, that seems like a bargain for such a rare and amazing car. Thanks for showing it to us DT!

When Mike first revved this beauty, he had the look on him of a young lad discovering his fathers "magazines". What an absolutely gorgeous machine.

I remember years ago, around the time when I had not long past my driving test, so would have been circa 1994 / 1995, I used to buy Max Power magazine and dream of my next car being one of the many beautifully professionally modified feature cars. I remember seeing a TVR Cerbera being featured as a special project in one of the issues. Not sure if it was the speed 12 but it was one of the most beautiful cars I had ever seen at that point

I think 500k is huge underestimate of what this car will go for ar auction. Every wealthy car collector in their 30s and 40's will be absolutely clammering to get thier hands on this. It's a true cult legend!

TVR has always been like the Norton Motorcycles of the car world. Moments of greatness, but often struggled and changed hands too many times.

I remember when they first mentioned the Speed 12, Keith Flint of The Prodigy stated he wanted the first production car (Keith was a BIG TVR fan) Unfortunately TVR never produced a production car and sadly Keith is no longer with us. Incredibly sad on both counts.

The coolest thing about it being a one off car is that from the wear on the shifter someone obviously had some fun actually using it .

I lived in Manchester for about seven years and was lucky enough to own a Tuscan and Chimera which were both serviced by the TVR factory in Blackpool, they were unforgettable cars, actually I'm looking for a TVR now that I live in Florida. Miss that brand very very much.

Awesome car and great video. The Panoz Gtr always fascinated me. It was the loudest thing I had ever heard on a track, and looked like the Batmibile. It would be cool if Drivetribe could track one down.

Something very similar to this, or maybe was part of the same development program, was on display at the 1999 Adelaide motor show. My record of the display placard from the event is 7.7L V12 and 0-100 km/h in 2.9 seconds. I didn’t recognise the brand at the time, but clearly it was something very rare.

Doing the Speed 12 challenge in Gran Turismo was the Bain of my childhood. I spent soooooo many hours memorizing the tracks and learning the car and I remember the pain and agony of spinning out after hours of perfecting the course. When I finally completed the challenge, I cried on the inside from joy and relief 😂

I’ve worked on that site that is seen in the video, it used to be a compound yard for the national grid in 2014, I was a subcontractor and while working there I couldn’t get over the fact I was where TVR once functioned. There was old bits of a TVR everywhere, it was very eerie. I actually got a photo of this speed 12 and the guys there was very friendly, I’ve never been more starstruck meeting a car like this and it’s something I’ll never forget. What a legacy.

What an intro to a video! As a wee boy in the late 90s early 00s I loved TVRs and always dreamed of owning a Tuscan R. I remember writing to them back in the day and they sent me loads of brochures and photos along with a purple speed 12 model car! Such a shame what happened. If I ever get the chance of owning one and being able to maintain it then I will! Epic machines.

Looking at this monster, I realized that the Dodge Viper Gen 1 was made with filigree fitment of body panels and a luxurious interior with the highest level of comfort.

I remember speaking to one of the engineers for the Aston Martin Vulcan when it was first released at goodwood festival of speed. I said to him to him that it heavily reminded me of the speed twelve and the guy laughed in my face. Glad to know I’m not the only one who thought it looked similar.

What size and brand tires are those?

I think back in Gran Turismo 4 days I made this car have over 1000hp. It was ridiculous fast and had a lot of traction! My friends didn´t know the car, so in races I pretendet to be just as fast as whatevery they were driving. And then at the last lap I just unleashed that thing and flew past them like a rocket.

I think this has to be one of my favourite drivetribe videos. From the extremely clean editing, the topic, Mike's presentation, that intro and down to the music. Everything hit just right

I am from the US, and never heard of TVR until I saw one in a movie Swordfish with John Travolta, it is a TVR Tuscan. It gets mixed reviews from a mechanical perspective, but I think it is one of the coolest looking sports cars, especially the multi color paint job version (if I had the money I would buy one, and just upgrade/fix some of the known flaws). As for too much to handle, have you seen the Aston Martin Vulcan, when Chris Harris drives it? Apparently, there is a street version of the Vulcan, I would be afraid to drive something with that much power.

The Speed 12 certainly hasn't been forgotten by FH4 players. Gorgeous and lethal. I leaned on it *hard* in the early game so it'll always have a place in my heart.

In terms of 'Gran Turismo Legends', this car is most definitely up there with the Suzuki Escudo Pikes Peak Edition and the Renault Espace F1. Absolutely bonkers cars and I love them all to bits!

I liked this video and watched the whole thing....however, there wasn't enough of that engine sound. I can't imagine what it was like in person. This car was also in one of my all time favourite games, Project Gotham Racing 3. It was a 200+ mph beast on there.

Saleen S7's were another car from this era I absolutely loved and never felt like they got the love they deserved from the public. Loved the video and really opened my eyes to a legend I never knew existed

I was lucky enough to be at the press launch of grand tourismo at an event in soho - this car was there and I was talking to the old owner. His wife didn’t know he owned it as he had a secret barn full of cars lol. I was standing next to the car when he started it and the exhaust burnt my leg. 1 thing that made this car especially memorable for me was the epic colors they had on offer in GT4. Those colourshifts we're the coolest thing to 8yr old me.

Definitely not forgotten, Mike. The original Speed 12 was one of my favourite cars in Gran Turismo 2 because it was an absolute beast to handle and very keen to put its back end out.

Unbelievable to see and hear this car in such detail, cars made famous by video games tend to be clouded in mystery and this really shows that the truth really can be stranger and more impressive than the fiction. As for other cars from this era of performance, I was always enamored growing up by the Lotec Sirius and the other Lotec bespoke cars, they really captured my imagination seeing them online and how rare they were and how little information was available. No idea if the Sirius or the C1000 are still around but that would make a great drivetribe video for sure.

Amazing video, and what a car! The only disappointment was the owner not taking Mike out for a wee spin in one of them! He did say he drives the purple one. I understand not letting someone else take it out given the reputation of the TVR's in general, and even the 4 litre Cerbera was a handful, but if the owner drives it it would have been nice to see it eat up a little tarmac and hear the engine in action. Maybe one day Mike will get a ride in one of them!

As a proud TVR owner (Tamora) I'd would love to be able to afford this. Sadly its not been heard much during its lifetime, and has largely spent life laid up. I hope whoever does buy it will use it more or at least allow others to admire the car like it was at Lakeland.

The other company Mr. Abbott mentions is not TBR, but TR Supercars, an engineering company based in Lytham St Annes. TR, working with former TVR Engineers built a Speed 12 with the components mentioned to use as a dynamic test rig for validation of the automotive components TR's parent company, Helical Technology, manufactures for high end marques such as McLaren & Ferrari. TR has since gone on to secure the trademarks of Speed 12 & Cerbera, and have built two more versions of the Speed 12 with twin turbocharged 6ltr V12s, producing north of 1,010bhp.

Perfect intro! Saw my first Chimaera in person (Ohio...) last week and it took me right back to GT2! To be fair, Polyphony digital did a faithful rendition of the car, it was an unmanageable beast no matter the tune you gave it.

As a blackpool boy who worked in that very tvr specialist when it was called ‘surface and design’ and once was lucky enough to go out for a ride in that absolute animal and the purple car. I can safely say that car is the most intimidating car you will ever be in the presence of. It is absolutely terrifying and one of the only cars I would be genuinely be scared to drive. I cannot stress how much of a privilege it was to experience that thing. And an experience I’ll never forget. Although it’s a huge shame. I can understand why Mr Wheeler decided to shut down the project. Many deaths would have fallen at the hands of that car.

Mike has become such a great presenter over the years. I recently rewatched the XJR-9 video from back in the day and he's come so far from then, purely driven by the love of cars. Well done sir

That thing is EPIC! And while not the same category of car it very much reminds me of av Doge viper on its design .and it's pure raw muscle.

The noise that engine made was nothing short of astonishing. I get why they didn't take it to a track, it's nearly priceless, but man, what I would give to see that beauty fire a few shots in anger! ^_^

I remember reading once the Speed 12 being described as "The kind of car Hell's Debt Collector would drive." Sums up this brutally powerful insanity perfectly.

There was a guy who bought one at an action. Obviously not this exact one but one of a few prototypes and added high performance parts and tuning. When they asked him how it drove he said you cant.It became so powerful it was not drivable.

This video just blew my mind, the speed twelve always felt like a myth to me. So very few videos out there on the real one and little information about it when I was still playing GT3. Hearing that beast of an engine almost brought tears tbh - this thing would have been ballistic if has its chance at the GT1 championship. Thank you DT 🙏🏽

That engine is pure magnificence.

I briefly owned a TVR Tuscan V8 (289) and the clutch went out after a couple of hundred miles. I don't blame TVR, the previous owner was heavy handed. The car didn't impress me (compared to a few others i still have) and i parted ways with TVR. I changed the clutch myself and a doctor from Connecticut bought it. I actually drove it up to his house and he cashed me out and drove me to the train station. This car in this video is a specialty one off car. Pretty sweet but if I could afford it i still have a few others I'd choose before it. It can't be driven where I live. I have a '87 911 turbo with the 505 option I bought new and I drive it in the cooler months. it's been 100 for 3 months a killer.

The Speed 12 first appeared not in Gran Turismo 3 but in GT2. Thanks for a great review of this shocking car.

Ahh, TVR. Silly cars. Very little direct experience, but a director at the place I worked in the late 90s had a 4.5l Griffith. Insane thing. He let a workmate of mine have a go and the guy almost put it in the wall in the car park. It went very fast very quickly in first. I didn't trust myself to go anywhere near it!

That was unreal. I’ve always wanted to know more about the Speed 12 but there just isn’t much for pictures of it online that I could ever find. And here’s a full video up close and personal with it. Totally made my day.
