The Boston Celtics dominated the 1960s, winning nine titles in 10 seasons, including seven in a row from 1960 to 1966-a near-perfect decade that has never been replicated in major North American professional sports. The only year in the 1960s that Boston did not win a title was 1967, the season the Celtics lost to eventual champion Philadelphia in the Eastern Conference finals.
The Celtics’ dynasty had two major inflection points: In 1950, owner Walter Brown hired 33-year-old Arnold “Red” Auerbach as head coach and general manager. On April 29, 1956. Auerbach traded Ed Macauley and Cliff Hagan to the St. Louis Hawks for their first-round draft pick, 6-foot-10 University of San Francisco center Bill Russell.

My sister and her husband went to school in the Boston area and my brother-in-law took me to a Celtics game on the crappy Boston subway. This was the mid-1970’s. But the game was great. I was a Bulls fan at the time and Boston was playing Chicago. John Havlicek, Dave Cowens and Jo Jo White were playing for the Celtics. I couldn’t believe I was there.

I remember these Celtics even though I was a preteen. Havlicek, Russell, White, Cowens, Cousy, and Coach Red Auerbach. Many of these guys are unknown to the current generation. They were team players, and the game of the past was more pleasurable to watch.

Bob Cousy played 13 seasons. He was an All Star 13 seasons, All NBA First Team 10 times and Second Team 2 times. He led the league in assists 8 times in a row. In the first year of the MVP being awarded(1956), he was third in the voting. In 1957, Russell's first year in the league and the first title in the run, Cousy won the MVP award. Cousy was an All Star 6 times, ALL NBA First Team 5 times and led the league in assists 4 times before Russell ever set foot in the NBA. He had almost just as big a part in their success as Russell but gets no credit. Even though Russell came in higher in the MVP voting, Cousy was usually in the Top 5, never coming in lower than 8th place his whole career.

Pretty much every player on the Celtics back then (including Cousy), said Russell was the reason they won those rings.
@oldeskoolnewsreels9927
@oldeskoolnewsreels9927 Жыл бұрын
@@dchester2 Not the "reason". The final piece of the puzzle. He was the best player on the best team. NOT the best player in the league. He was only ALL NBA First Team center 3 times in his career. Just like Jordan was the best player on the best team. Jordan only won ONE playoff game in the 5 years he played without Pippen. Without Cousy and Sharmin to get things started, he'd have no rings. Or a lot less. Cousy was never less than 8th place in MVP voting. In 1959, Cousy, Russell AND Sharmin were all First Team players. They had 3 guys on the ALL NBA teams for 10 years straight. Russell didn't make Cousy and Sharmin First Team players, they were long before he stepped foot in the league. Yes, Russell was great, but put him on another team and he doesn't have 11 rings.
@oldeskoolnewsreels9927
@oldeskoolnewsreels9927 Жыл бұрын
@@dchester2 Also, I bet most of them really would give credit to Auerbach, who IS the best coach ever. He had 9 rings as a coach, but 4 of his players went on to win 7 rings as head coach in the NBA and one in the ABA. It was his coaching and system which put it all together.

Bird was good, but he is only the 41st scorer in nba history, John Havlicek was better than Bird in my opinion, he scored more points than Bird and won more championships than Bird. I believe one year, John Havlicek broke his right hand, but he continued playing and just shot with his left hand. John Havlicek was a true ambidextrous he could shoot with either hand, only a handful of players throughout history were ambidextrous, Paul Westphal and LeBron James are 2 that come to mind. John Havlicek pretty much invented the 6th man position, he did not have a huge ego, he could start or come off the bench, it didn't matter to him, he could also play guard or forward too.

I don't recall Havlicek doing it once. I take it you haven't read Michael Jordans opinion who the Best Small forward to ever play the game was, have you? I'll let you guess. Bird is thee Only one to win the Long distant shootout 3 years in a row as well.

@@joes6883 Bird could use his left hand but he was not ambidextrous like John Havlicek. Also John Havlicek pretty much invented the 6th man position due to his unselfishness. Back then they did not give awards for unselfishness. Havlicek won 8 championships to Bird's 3 championships. Even as a 6th man for much of his career, John Havlicek still outscored Larry Bird 26,395 points to 21,791. John Havlicek did a lot of stuff that did not even show up on the stat sheet, such as his movement without the ball. I have not seen anyone who moves without the ball as well as John Havlicek, and I have been watching the NBA since the 70s.

@@StevenC32 Yeah, Bird did alot that didn't show up on stat sheet either. Also, Only 3rd person in NBA history to win the MVP 3 years in a row. Only Bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlain did it also. Yeah, Havlicek played longer than Bird because Bird had Back problems from Diving for balls and getting in the Mix all the time under the board. Jordan even said that Bird was thee Best Small Forward to Ever play the game.
@StevenC32
@StevenC32 Жыл бұрын
@@joes6883 That's absurd! Everyone knows that LeBron James is the best small forward to ever play the game, and it isn't even close. LeBron has more MVPs than Bird, more points than Bird, more rebounds than Bird, more championships than Bird. Just because Michael Jordan says something, doesn't make it true. I would be interested in seeing what Bill Russell had to say about who he thought was better between Bird and Havlicek.

Modern fans try to discredit this team because they did not have to run a gauntlet in the playoffs like today's teams do. To that I would counter that today's teams face the 360 best players in the world. Russell's Celtics went against the 144 best players in the world night in and night out. That means there are at least five guys on every team today that would not even be in the league if there were 12 teams.

Bill Russell wouldn't let the Celtics lose, if someone failed to do their job they had to answer to Bill Russell first, and then to Red Auerbach. Bill Russell was a great leader, he did not care about individual points as long as his team won. He even told Don Nelson who had trouble rebounding, just to block his man out and that he will grab the boards. Bill Russell knew where every player was on the floor at all times, he was basically a coach on the court. That is why they made him player coach for the Celtics last 2 championships during the 60s.

I hated the Celtics as I hated the Yankees because they never lost. The deck was stacked to me. Few today realized how dominant the Celtics were, as Red had a vision that was implemented once Russell and KC came in 1956, and then adding Havlicek who was the original Sixth Man and perhaps the most underrated player in sports history. The Celtics were basically great because of their defense. Today we are at the cusp of a new dynasty-the OKC Thunder. Don’t jeer!
