In all my years of gaming, no other experiences have tested my skill and patience as much as these ones for the NES have. A lot of people shy away from these because of their difficulty, but if I can do it, so can you! I hope you'll give some of these a try sometime. 🍖

When I was young, Blaster Master blew my tiny brain when it let me get out of the vehicle and walk around! It's always been special to me. Weirdly, I didn't realize how hard it was until I played it again as an adult. Apparently, 8 year old me was some kind of gaming savant because I can't finish half the games today that I used to play! Thanks for this great video. You channel is so excellent. Blaster Master definitely brings the challenge! This is a weird question, but are you playing your games in such a way that introduces any input lag? I know that I didn't realize it was a thing a long time ago and suddenly wondered where all my gaming skill went. When I got back to a CRT and original hardware, I was back to my own normal again. And thanks about the videos and your kind words about the channel. I just do this for fun along with the livestreams. No training! Just an enthusiast at heart :)

I hate ghosts and goblins simply because they make you go through the game a second time to beat it. No extra levels with actual good design to prolong the game in a meaningful way. Nothing is a continuation in the 2nd half. It is just lazy padding to churn out time to make it seem like a game worth the money. On top of it being unfairly difficult, it's a major slap in the face and one of the worst designed nes games for that reason. Pure trash, imo.

Yeah after multiple fails on snake rattle and roll the 45 degree ice stair set at the very end of the level is insane. Then you get a boss where you miss one hit on it it gets full health. What a deliciously nostalgic video! First of all, I give you all the kudos in the world for beating all of these super tough NES games! I love Blaster Master with all of my video game heart as I played that one back in my childhood. I borrowed it from a friend and after six grueling months of playing the game and making it just a little bit further on each playthrough, I finally managed to beat it! It remains one of my all-time favs to this day. CONGRATS on beating Snake Rattle 'n Roll as well! It took me 30 YEARS to finally beat that insane Ice Foot on the moon and I can't tell you how excited I was to finally pull that one off. The other games you mentioned are all superb as well. Beating Mike Tyson is still one of my best NES accomplishments. That fight was SO tough! And Ghosts 'n Goblins was a game I finally beat last year. Not sure I will play that one again anytime soon though. Journey to Silius is wonderful (music is SO good!) and Friday the 13th really grew on me once I learned how the map works. Great video! You should go after Battletoads and Ninja Gaiden next! ;)

Right on! Congrats on all your wins as well. These are not easy games and it's great to know that there are others out there grinding away trying to get the wins. It's funny because I've been casually into Battletoads most of my life but can never get past the snakes. I've never really sat down and tried too hard to beat it, but maybe this is the time. And for Ninja Gaiden, I've actually gotten to the second form of the final boss but just didn't have enough energy that night to keep going. Victory is in sight at least! Thanks for the encouragement. Hopefully there can be a part two someday, haha

I honestly just stumbled into your channel last night and I really enjoyed this video along with a few others. 😊 You’ve made some great points and it’s nice to see someone who is very candid and objective when they review games. I try to be that way but I’ll be the first to admit that my nostalgia rose colored glasses get in the way at times. 🤣 by the way congrats on at least making it as far as you have on Ninja Gaiden! I would honestly encourage you to really push to finish that one as it has a wonderful ending and to be perfectly honest with you the second game is way easier! The third Ninja Gaiden game is very tough as well but I still feel like the first one is the hardest overall. Battletoads might very well be the hardest game I have played in my life so you might want to just hold off on that one until you are truly ready for it lol. So watching your authentic struggle with the same games I played and eventually overcame as a kid brought back some good memories. Straight up puzzles, most games require you to react properly this little game you had to think about how to solve its puzzles. Great work on completing these games. Currently at around 220 NES games completed, all regions, but mostly US. Metal Storm on Expert (Second loop) would be the hardest thing I completed on NES, but thats an optional mode. The default mode is moderate but expert feels untested at points, trying to find the movement paths. As far as default challenges, Ninja Gaiden 3 took me around 16 hours and had alot of parts to put together. Its easy to forget alot of the smaller details and its the only one with limited continues in the series. You also take much more damage and checkpoints are much farther apart than in the other 2 games. Cobra Triangle and Snake Rattle n Roll both seem like some of the hardest games on the NES and also play very well, so Id like to work on those. Great work completing Snake Rattle N Roll. Battletoads was a game I never really liked, so never spent much time on it. I have beaten most of the Ghost N Goblins games but will have to work on the NES one more. Its a pretty sloppy port but would be cool to complete regardless. Blaster Master seems like a tough one from what I remember, but never completed it. Castlevania 3 Im currently at the end of and its definately alot harder than the first game. Journey To Silius only took me a little over 3 hours to beat, but as you said its not too bad once you realise you have to creep the screen and play it slowly. I use save states to practice sections of these games efficiently in order to put them together, so it would take much longer playing on the system and having to restart the full games. It definately changes the practicing process. I tried Frday The 13th recently with a guide, and still couldnt figure out what the fuck to do, ha ha. Great work on being patient enough to see it through.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on these games. I'll add Cobra Triangle and Ninja Gaiden 3 to the list of hard games I need to bust out sooner or later. I seem to really click with isometric stuff so maybe I'd fare well with Cobra Triangle more than most folks. I definitely agree that playing without save states changes the practice progress. In games like Journey to Silius or Blaster Master, having one life to try out a new boss and then go alllll the way back was pretty annoying sometimes. I do enjoy the extra practice and try to look at every playthrough as an excuse to get better, but that bright-eyed perspective only goes so far, haha

@@hungrygoriya No problem. Really enjoyed the video, as the topic of difficult games is one of my favorites. Great narration and editing too. Nice. Isolated Warrior and Zen Intergalactic Ninja might be some others you enjoy then. Both seem tough. Cobra Triangle and Snake Rattle N Roll seem like some of the top tier difficulty NES games, atleast for games that dont play really bad. If you ever want an extra challenge Metal Storm on Expert is super satisfying. There is a password for the second quest. You'd want to beat it on normal first to get familiar with it, but Expert is a completely different game. Yea, it requires even more patience to play the games without saves to practice. I look at it as efficient practice, similiar to practicing a section of music and dont see it as illegit, but it is a tool we didnt have back then. Yea, ha ha. Games can put me in a darker place pretty quick, when really invested in beating a brutal game. The satisfaction of finally completing them is addictive though.

Lovely video and lovely list! I really enjoy listening to stories of how people managed to beat old and incredibly hard NES-games. I would add the first TMNT and Bart vs the Space Mutants to the list aswell. Classic, frustrating and wonderfully satisfying to beat :) As for myslef, I've gone thru a couple of odd ones that I dont recommend, such as: Airwolf, Silkworm and the Last Starfigher. Holy Diver on the famicom is also a real beast to get thru! Looking forward to the next video!

Great video! It took me many years to finally figure out how to play Friday the 13th. I wanted to like the game for so long, but I just didn’t think it was made well. A few years ago I got the mechanics of the game down and knew what needed to be done to progress. Got a decent run on it a couple years ago. I wanted a Castlevania 3 run and have been practicing it all year. Finally got a good run with Sypha that’ll go live for Halloween next year. There were times I had 1 health left with zero lives! Just had to keep going and don’t give up! Zelda II is a game I come back to every couple years. I love collecting items in 8bit games. Can’t remember if you’ve covered Goonies II before, but that game gives me the same type of feel as the two Zelda games, as far as collecting items go.

Oh nice! Do you think you'll come back to Friday the 13th and finally try to beat it? I put about 15 hours of learning into it before some things finally started making sense and then I came back a few months later and beat it. It was really exhilarating to see the end screen! You mean I have to wait another 10 months for Castlevania 3 goodness? Fiiiiine! That's great that you've finally got a groove down for it. It's so hard... I haven't felt motivated to get back to it to try out the other characters. I have not played Goonies II yet, but it's definitely on my shortlist of things to play soon. Nice to see another new video! This was a great list of games, some of which I have yet to play or beat, but are on my purchase list for sometime in the near future. The adventure of Link is one of the most difficult games I've ever completed in my life, if not the most difficult. I spent many of stressful hour playing it as a teenager after I bought it from the local video store when they sold off all of their NES games. I wasn't able to get any further than roughly Death Mountain or perhaps across the river to the next section near where the maze Palace is. It took me graphing out every area and the entire Overworld map, every dungeon, town, etc. before I was able to beat the game in its entirety. Oh man, it was quite a challenge! I was not prepared for how much greater the challenge became once I entered the Great Palace. The map I drew for that was so huge, and labyrinthian, that I was dumbstruck when I looked at it after I completed the drawing. All this was challenging enough, especially the Fokka and Fokkeru enemies, but also the Thunderbird and Dark Link. Palaces are definitely the hardest part of this game!

What a great set of games to talk about difficulty wise! I love all these games, but haven't played Journey to Silius yet, but after seeing/hearing about it, I'm inspired to give it a shot. For personal experiences for me here, it's truly a mixed bag of results. Friday the 13th I rented as a kid, and got absolutely nowhere. Years later, a friend I met in high school owned and he never beat it either, so we spent a full weekend trying to beat it at his house, and while we killed Jason once and learned a lot, we couldn't do any better than that. After having come back and beaten it myself as an adult, it was very fun watching you work through it. You and I found different ways to get the torch, which is awesome because I find it a blast watching people play spoiler/backseat free because you develop your own style/strats! Punch Out was a childhood game for me, and while I could make it to Tyson, I never came close to beating him. Mr Sandman was a huge roadblock with that uppercut combo he's got, but Tyson just was far more than I could ever handle. I wish I'd seen you play this live, it's such a fun game to watch someone succeed at! Snake Rattle n Roll was such a pleasant surprise. Ren brought this game to my attention, and what a fun, well balanced game it is! Those last levels are something else, but anyone that enjoys difficult NES platforming needs to play this for sure! Blaster Master was another childhood game of mine, but honestly, far too difficult for me initially. When I got this game, my parents owned a sports collectibles store in a local mall, so I'd bring my NES and play in the back room of the store. Months were spent mapping the game out, learning where I needed to go, learning boss strats, and finally putting it all together. Without having all that extra free time to learn it, there was no way I was beating this. Your playthrough was amazing, and you quickly adapted to using hover to get through area 8's spikes, which was the key! Ghosts N Goblins I had as a kid, and even beat loop 1, but the horrors of finding out the awful truth with loop 2 was more than I could handle, and I never touched it again till I was an adult! It's very interesting how level 2 with the ogre house is so darn hard, and honestly worst than 99% of the rest of the game! Your clip with the key falling is not surprising considering how little time that level gives you. Castlevania III was a game I never played as a kid, but it's since become one of my favorite games of all time. The game has everything going for it and is one of the most fair games as far as a combo of being difficult but also giving you a chance to correct yourself and get better. I look forward to you playing through the others paths and using the other characters! Zelda II was another childhood game for me, and a lot of people really didn't like this game, and that's a real shame. It's by far my favorite Zelda of all time, and coming back for more never gets old. The dungeons are something else, and that knockback is terrifying when around lava. Maybe one day they'll make a new side scrolling platform Zelda like this one and leave that 3D nonsense behind! I really love your point about how a game can be really hard, but be fair to where you're taught the mechanics and given chances to improve your skills before later stages. Some games do not do that at all, but these games in particular have ways to where you can slowly improve, make adjustments, practice, and be well rewarded for your efforts. That separates a good game from a great game I think. Excellent stuff as always, Hungry! Sorry for the long winded comment, but it's really exciting hearing your thoughts on so many of these games that have been incredibly fun to me!

My friend, I really enjoyed reading your experiences with all of these. It's cool that you got to spend so much time in the back of a store playing games and just getting good at them. I can imagine those days with Blaster Master are quite memorable because of that! Your experience with the crushing reality of the first loop of GnG not being the last sounds like mine with Little Nemo except that I just got mad at the train stage and quit for about 10 years! It's funny how we can be so shattered by that stuff when we're younger, but it eats away at us until a later time when we come back for revenge and get it! And now look at what you've done to that poor game, hahaha I really want to play through Zelda II again one of these days. It was so much fun getting through it the first time and I'd love to see just how much my memory serves me in a subsequent playthrough. Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts here. I've finished Contra with the Konami code but I'd need to work pretty hard to get through it without it! My Virtual Boy's actually modified for AV out so I can play it on a TV.
