Lord in heaven! Tell me about it. I flew from OGG (Maui) to NYC Sep 6, 2001 for a friend's wedding and to visit friends in general as I used to live there. Lo and behold, I got caught up in the terrorist attacks and my return flight was canceled indefinitely. Of course, I didn't mind a bit considering the gravity of the situation. However, what I did mind was traveling to LA from La Guardia. It was hell! First, it took me nearly 3 hours to get from Westwood, NJ to La Guardia. I also had to be at the airport 3-4 hours before the flight. The flight was overbooked and I got bumped into a later flight that ended up cancelled. La Guardia was the worst airport I've ever been to. And, the security detail didn't let you stand anywhere for more than a few minutes. All in all, it took me almost four days to get back to Hawaii and, renovated, modernized, or whatever they do to that dumpster of an airport, I will never choose a flight to or from there.

It's my favorite NY airport for the views if you're lucky to have Hudson 22 on a crystal clear day. What's the altitude they vector you at along The Hudson and flying North over the river by lower Manhattan skyscrapers? Is it 3,000 feet and approximately thirty seconds later when adjacent to the midtown Manhattan skyscraper cluster? I got some great pictures years ago since I love major city skylines and especially NYC and Washington, DC Potomac 19. Obviously, you're used to 22, 4, 13/31. I bet you wish you had another 5K more on each. lol. Thx Myan.

I hear you about trying to deal with LGA. I am a former Purser Flight Attendant and having built the new terminal while dealing with the old terminal and still operating the airport is so nice. But the NY Port Authority and the city itself is still with the two runways problems of only two! If there is more land filling from the harbor to extend both runways then that would help. And more land fill would give more space to the airport and that would be nice. The NY Port Authority is still trying to make this airport appealing for travelers. It is hard but they keep trying . Furthermore, the air traffic is getting back to being crowed like it was back in 2019 or 2018 so we will see how this continues to be. This airport is still in a hard situation but the city is still trying to cope with it.

Engineering a good solution in a democratic blue state like New York is pure fantasy. It won't happen. They already blew it with the Tappan Zee Bridge rebuild, where they left off the rail lines. New York also pays 7x per mile as much as London for new subway tunnels- and London has some of the highest construction costs in the world. Let that sink in: SEVEN TIMES. New York has the worst prison in the USA right next to LaGuardia, Rikers Island. That's another shit show that any real state could fix, but New York can't. Keep in mind that since New York just had arguably the worst mayor in the world, in the history of mankind, and for all of the future, in Bill DeBlasio. If even 1% of his incompetence was able to affect LGA operations, all flights should be grounded immediately. LaGuardia was a total shit show when I went thru there in 2019, I doubt it's much better. They were also proposing an ultra-expensive monorail to move passengers from the airport to downtown NYC. The monorail passengers per hour was a tiny fraction of what was needed, the cost was astronomical per mile, and just think of what would happen when it breaks down- you're trapped. Saying anything good about LaGuardia is the same thing as lying.

One of the very key problems is no connection to mass transit other than a bus. In the end a train at LGA either subway or light rail is going to cost billions and years more and inconvenience people and snarl traffic while it is being built. They spent how many billion on the terminal but didn't even put in a ferry to Manhattan. The waterway is already there though there may be some work involved, but it wouldn't involve moving roads and making vehicle traffic even worse. I recently rode the air train at JFK and it was quite nice and I would rather do that than go to LGA. Even the bus at HPN is better as there isn't as much traffic to connect to the transit center and metro north. When I go to LI, ISP is my preferred as it is super easy, rental cars are a breeze and connection to the LIE & Parkways or LIRR is easy. To me they should have done everything in one shot at LGA and been done with it. FLY NAVY!!!

They were going to build an airtrain, but the plan was horrible, went the wrong direction, and would have taken longer than existing bus connections. Thankfully, Hochul canceled it and now there are new proposals that more seriously consider the right choice, which is an extension of the N and W trains from Astoria.

@red5t653
@red5t653 Жыл бұрын
The issue is mainly that you'd have to get the line around the overpass from the eastbound Grand Central somehow, while also altering the median. The actual solution would've been something like aligning the tracks to Ditmars Blvd and then Astoria Blvd but that's subject to a hell of a lot of NIMBYism. And then because of THAT, the tracks would be opposite to the actual terminals themselves... and thus need a bridge across in some capacity OVER Grand Central. There's just no easy solution, aside from the train link up to Willets Point that would make travel times too obscenely long.
@mkkm945
@mkkm945 2 жыл бұрын
As Peter says in the video, if the airport is using 22 landing/13 take off, it's more efficient because the intersection is at the beginning of both runways, so the touchdown happens and instantly the takeoff can roll. When the winds are unfavourable, the opposite happens where the takeoff has to wait for the touchdown to pass or exit slowly and then roll. That said, this new taxiway configuration will fix a huge problem and allow for significantly better ops.

The route the Airtrain was going to take was the major complaint, as Mets-Willets Point is to the east of the airport. But the amount of construction required to route anything coming from the west made it the only viable route that would not be hyper expensive nor would require any distruption to airport operations.

Just think: New York's governor killed 12,000+ elderly nursing home patients, because he failed to isolate covid patients from the elderly. He could have done it, the beds were available, but he just didn't, so 12,000 people died who didn't have to die.

Very true. However Americans are allergic to spending public money for high quality unless extreme marketing is attached to it. It's one of the country's faults unfortunately. Because of the density of the corridor I believe cost to build a completely new track there approaches $1bn per mile or something outrageous. Whatever the real cost estimate is, it's approximately the budget which airlines and bus companies and their industries will be willing to pay in lobbying to keep rail from happening.

Hong Kong has even less land, they built an airport on reclaimed island. They also have a location in the busiest part of the city to drop off luggages on the day your flight is scheduled to depart, so you have the option to explore the city a bit more freely just before your flight. I lived in NYC from 1980-2014. I flew into and out of LGA last October and was very impressed with the improvements. I was staying with friends in Jackson Heights (my old neighborhood), took the Q70 bus to the airport, got out at the main terminal and walked into the spacious terminal to check in at AA. After checking my bag, waited in a roomy line to go through security with jovial and courteous TSA agents and walked into a spacious area with a food court. I had a bagel with cream cheese and a coffee at Zaro’s and had plenty of room to socially distance. The walk to my gate was long, but not unbearable (try São Paulo International (GRU) some time). There was plenty of space, restrooms and water fountains at the gate area. Boarding was prompt and we were able to leave early, so that I actually had an w5 minutes to make my connection at DCA. On the return trip, by the time I got to baggage claim, my bag was already there. Seems to me like they’re going in the right direction.
