Entertainment value I agree, but I don't think they're worse today in skills and ability, it's just a different game. Back then there's more space and freedom, the players are less physical overall. Today you have to follow tactics more strictly, both in attack and defence, there're different expectations so overall improvements in tactics and sports science means there's less chance that you can just abuse the opposition defence.

Today u see way more cards and interuptions than u saw in the 80s or 90s. Defender nowadays r helpless against attacker thats why they try to compensate this handicap by Athletics. Attacker always had been fit and fast as today. Even bican had a pace as fast as mbappe today in the 30s on much worse pitches. Today it only seem faster because defender cant defend anymore and got to let the attacker run past them otherwise its a card. @@Thehawkdown99 The challenge from behind was outlawed back in 2005, meaning that players, especially defenders could no longer do that which in turn has made things that bit easier for forwards ever since. Actually I was wrong as apparently it came into effect in 1998. Here's a quote from an article on the subject: "Zero tolerance for the tackle from behind Prior to the 1998 World Cup, FIFA made the tackle from behind a red card offence. The wording emphasised that it was a tackle "which endangers the safety of an opponent". Indeed, what the aforementioned Van Basten had to endure during his career is said to have contributed to the introduction of zero tolerance for tackles from behind the player with the ball. The Dutch great's playing career ended prematurely at the age of just 28 in 1993 with the effect of dangerous tackles on him believed to be one of the reasons." link to the article: www.otbsports.com/soccer/three-football-rule-changes-that-ultimately-benefited-the-sport-255353

That's categorically not true. There are more technically gifted players now, than ever before. Academies world wide, now focus on technique. Before, it used to be Holland, Spain and France for Europe, with England and Germany more physical, and Italy more tactical. The technical players came from South America. These days, they are everywhere, so, it doesn't stand out as much. There's a saturation of technique, that makes it seem like there is less, as it's just an expected trait now.

its not so much about having less talents. its so much more about player development and the tactical discipline of different teams. Nowadays from a very young age, players start to follow a much stricter training regiment compared to back then. In addition, players have lesser freedom in their respective roles. They are bound to strict orders in their gameplay. they have been drilled to go for more reliable but less fancy options in every scenario. a good example would be pep shouting at kompany not to shoot from a distance and to pass the ball instead. Kompany shot anyway and scored a spectacular goal. sure it worked that time for kompany and it was a beautiful goal but more often than not, players will tend to miss the target. Back then players have so much more freedom. The tactical landscape of the game has changed so much. its time we embrace it.

Tactics have always existed. All the way footballers can kick, pass, shoot, cross amd dribble the ball has remained the same in the last 2 decades and no new way of doing things have been invented. Even tactics have all been known. Football is a very simple sport, which ultimately is about putting the ball in the back of the net. So when players with enough talent play the beautiful game in a free way, no tactic is enough to stop them.

We already had that discussion a few years ago. In the early/mid 2010s, people were saying number 9 died, and now we had the false 9 or wingers who go to the area... but for the past few years, the number 9 role came back with a bang.
