Жыл бұрын

If you haven't seen the other videos on this Pastel Yellow 996, this is a car I bought that was supposed to be a turn-key car that just received an engine out service. After some quick inspection I pulled the engine and transmission back out to sort all of this cars issues, and uncover even ore in the process. This video is the culmination of the last year's worth of work. Finally, I can enjoy the time and money spent on this car. We even take it for a quick spin!
You can find the first 5 videos here: • The 996 That Wasn't so...
Will there be more videos on this car? Absolutely! However, bow that the majority of mechanical work is complete, the "to do" list includes mainly cosmetic and aesthetic repairs which I'll cover when time permits.
The big question here...
Did I learn a lesson? No. Used cars come with inherent risk. Used European sports cars come with a greater risk AND the fact that this car had been "repaired" carried the largest risk factor. I did however learn quite a bit about these particular cars and now they seem incredibly simple.
I'll probably do it again. Lets hope I can finish some more projects before that happens.
As always, I appreciate all of the comments, feedback and even the criticism. Catch you on the next one!
-Erixc

I am also a restoration hobby participant. Your problem with the radiator hoses was totally Bubba’s fault. Doesn’t matter what kind of car, if it’s old, Bubba has been there and will modify or misuse any part anywhere. When I start a restoration I always look for Bubba’s work so I can correct it. Bubba really gets around!!!

I share with you the same thought when it comes to "some cars are just good the way they are" as you grow older you really start to appreciate the simplicity of things and mostly in older cars. Sometimes less is more and anything can work and be functional as long as you take good care of it and give it the proper maintaneace.

It's always nice to get to the point of a project where it's drivable. It definitely breathes new life into the enthusiasm you have for it. That being said, I spent two long days helping my Nephew swap out the suspension on his '08 Volkswagen Golf R32. The entire first day was almost entirely spent on changing the front sway bar. The whole front suspension needs to be essentially dismantled to get it out. The best part was the aftermarket bar he bought to replace it didn't fit. As soon as the stocker was on the ground next to the replacement, it was very apparent that it wasn't going to fit, so we had to do all that work in reverse to re-install the stock sway bar. By comparison, the front struts and rear springs and shocks took maybe half a day. I now own a set of triple square bits I'll probably never use again, as well as the bit to spread the front knuckle to get the strut out. So, between that experience and watching your experience with fine german engineering has pretty much cemented the idea that I'd rather walk than own a german car. Glad it's back together, though!

The end was the best when you said there were a LOT of mods you could do but, you have matured to realize that driving a stock car is the best. I was 17 years old and a senior in high school when I got a 1969 Corvette t-top, auto, A/C, and every other option that was available (it was 1974 and it was only 5 years old- I didn't realize what I had). I was always tinkering with it and updating it instead of just driving it and doing maintenance. I now have a stock car that I simply enjoy driving. I did get all of the Weathertech items for it that I could but, it is so nice to just getting in, starting it, and simply driving off knowing you will get there. So- just enjoy the Porsche and all of your other cars!

Also, this car is pretty rare! It’s an early build (12/97-8-98), so it has a few interior specific things to that production group (one of about 3500), and it has amber tail lights. These early build cars are thought of to be the best 996’s. Hand built with the last 993’s. Also that color is awesome!

You can just tell Eric has that "hmm, it actually works" look 36:37-36:38. Eric, if you see this, I have still have a set of stock LT1 heads I'll give you if you still need them for your C4. Swapped them out for a set of AFR heads off a 97 Trans am in 2001ish. I don't want them and have held onto them for 20+ years now, time to go to a better home.
