Chet, Before you change out that hub, try Welding a nut (thru the center of the nut) to the end of the broken cap screw. You might have to try a couple times if the nut twists off when trying to remove the broken cap screw. I have found you can get a better weld if you drill a hole in the broken piece first, then plunge the wire feeding from welder down thru the nut into the hole in the bolt and pull back while filling the hole and center of nut. It does work. I had to make 7 or 8 attempts once to extract a broken Lug bolt on my Hi-Lo. What I did to hold the nut in place was to tape the nut in place with painters tape and cut the area open to reach into the nut. The tape kinda lights up, but no big deal just snuff it out and make sure there is no oil or residue in the area. I have also used a magnet along the side of the hub protruding over the edge to hold the nut to be welded to the broken stud. Good luck.

Those winched can draw a LOT of amps (500 at 12v), you need to go to a much larger cable and run a ground the whole way back to the battery. Also hook up your 50 amp power from the truck because the dinky little solar panel is not enough.

They make it so enjoyable and I learn so much about maintenance (not that I have a farm) and how they seem to know how to manage most issues that arise. It's great to watch them interact in a way makes watching fun. Really good content, thanks.

Been following your channel for a couple of years now Chet, always enjoy the banter and admire the farms progress. Good work boys. The main reason for the comment, I am an AG engineer in the UK and have come across your snapped bolt situation many times, I too have had limited success with the ez outs of all brands on the smaller studs. A great tip I learnt from an old pro. Set your mig welder up, spot weld on to the end broken stud or bolt to build up some surface area (short bursts allowing to cool before the next burst) then find a suitable nut i.e. M8 stud then say a 10 or 12mm nut (not a Nyloc) place over the built up stud and send it with the welder, fully puddle welding the centre of the nut getting it cherry red. Important, now let it cool off some. Get your 17mm or 19mm open ended spanner/wrench and gently work it forwards and backwards a little at a time to unscrew the stud. works every time. if the nut wrings off first time have another go welding it on until you get her done. Save a fortune on not having to buy a new hub and won't run the risk of the sealant failing and allowing the hub oil to leak out, ruining the brg's. Best of luck with the stud extraction. Oh maybe try out the method on some piece of junk out off the scrap heap 1st to get your hand in. Thanks for the video uploads.

all that time on back/knees and floor - go to a swimming supply store and pick up a dozen of the kickboards that are covered with a rubbery waterproof plastic - not the cheap crumbly foam type. A couple of those are super light and you can stack them, spread them where you need to contact with knees/shoulders etc and save a lot of owwies.

I did it at our shop all the time. All you need is a flatwasher smaller than the bolt and one quick pull of the wire gun. Turn the nut and see if it comes out. When that breaks get a helicoil kit, follow the instructions and basically replace the thread.

It's not too late to Drill the hole out and use a larger bolt providing you have a tap and die set with a set of good numbered drill bits. A center punch will help you when starting to drill a hole. You can buy a set of bullet point bits they don't walk as bad as standard steel bits but the center punch works best IMO. I work with cables and your right about the danger involved. It takes a lot to break a cable but when they do you hope no one gets hit because most of the time it's hospital time. Great video We don't learn if we don't make a mistake.

To help keep the bit from walking, center punch and drill a 1/8” hole. Yeah it takes a bit longer but the both the drill and the bit will like you for it. The cut off for the winch is to help keep the wireless box from killing the battery as it draws power all the time for the wireless receiver.

Use a center punch to mark your holes then the bit won't walk. Start with a little bit then go up. Also step bits are nice. Match the speed of the drill to how hard your pushing down so that you see nice big chips coming off the bit. Usually, with a hand drill and like a half inch bit you have to put as much force as u can behibd the drill and then go really slow and the bit will chew right through and more importantly, stay sharp.

If you center punch broken off bolt,then start with a small bit to drill. Keep enlarging hole with larger drill bits. Once bolt thickness is just short of female threads, you can take a punch or screwdriver to knock the broke bolt out. I had great luck doing this. Also drill rpm is best at 3000 rpn

Chet, Eric, here's a small hint for drilling broken bolts. Use a good center punch first. Smack it a couple of times with a hammer. Then drill it. once you have the extractor in warm the bolt up with the torches, shoot it with some PB Blaster to rapidly cool it. 99 times out of 100 the bolt will unthread then.
@olegrumpy4519

You can also drill it with a small bit, then take a dremel with a carbide bit, very small, and cut through the bolt from the center out, that will relieve it and it should turn out.

I would suggest running cables from the truck to keep everything going! I have 2 trucks wired the same, with 2AWG cables from the vehicles battery to a disconnect at the rear. Every time I hook up that trailer, I hook up those cables to charge the battery plus to provide adequate amps to the motor when using it. It would absolutely suck to be pulling something onto that trailer, and then the battery dies! It's cheap enough to do! Even if you do it for just the primary vehicle that you think you'll be using
