the hunger games is my favourite series of all time (i even love the movies). i can't even think about it without tearing up. it's a trilogy that so carefully and thoughtfully represents the horrors of the real world, includes so much nuance, so much suffering, but so much love and hope. if it's not considered a classic in the future i will be rioting!

I first read it when I was 11 and I’ve reread it every year since then. I was afraid it’d be one of those cases where you grow up and read your childhood faves only to realise it wasn’t as good as you thought it was since my appreciation for this series grows every time I read it

I'm 28 now, so I was around when The Hunger Games books first came out, as well as the films. This series changed my life and altered my belief system in a way that was SO special and important for me as a young teenager. It made me question the government, the treatment of poor people, the justice system, all of it. I found myself looking at the people of District 12, the Games themselves, the parading of Tributes and Victors amongst the rich as though they were props - and I thought to myself over and over, "It isn't fair!!" And that rage has followed me into adulthood. I have the politics I have today because of those books. They radicalized myself and I believe - an entire generation.

My favorite thing about the Hunger Games is that it was this profound series that we all read and loved when we were young but it dumped down by the media and simplified into being about a love triangle, and then we all grew up and reread it and had a Hunger Games Renaissance where it was really given the appreciation and the deep analysis it always deserved.
@Nothereforit174
@Nothereforit174 4 ай бұрын
So your favorite thing isn’t about the series but your perception of its revival recently, I recall it was always talked about as a dystopia but naturally when the stars were the focus, their characters romance was played up to use the formula of previous marketing. I don’t think it was dumped though so much as it lost steam in the book community naturally and the movies took a while to complete so the craze died down. It’s having another release so the nostalgia is making people reanalyze it on its own merit since there’s so triangle to pick sides on this time given it’s a prequel and the original actors have long moved on. Katniss Everdeen was a huge deal at one point and not for her dating choices
@Nothereforit174
@Nothereforit174 4 ай бұрын
But maybe you’re a little younger. For me as an older gen z it started out as a cool dystopian novel with a kick butt heroine everyone at school was obsessed with. The romance was secondary because it was just there and something else to talk about

God, the painting scene had me crying. Just imagining this mother who clearly loved her son even in a time where dying of aids was seen as something to hide and being gay was something to be ashamed of. Her seeing two boys in love and giving them one of his paintings saying they can "share it for the rest of their lives" and you just know shes silently hoping they'll live longer than him. That was like a knife to my fucking soul.

You were absolutely spot on re Happy Place. I was underwhelmed by Book Lovers and 'Vacation ' and wasn't planning on reading any more. The characters are interesting and my heart is aching. I'm halfway through and I paused to tell you that! I also got Aristotle and Dante for my daughter. I got her Charm Offensive for her because of you and she loved that. Love your channel.

Omg yess! People sleep on An Ember in the Ashes and it’s SOOOO GOOD! Another YA series that is underrated and explores similar themes is Fireborne, it’s the best YA series I’ve read in a long time.

I love your recommendations. Loved some of these especially the Perks of being a wallflower and Persepolis. Idk if it’s bc I just finished writing another book but you randomly popped up on my YT feed and I really enjoyed this and have a few new books on my (too long) list of books to read starting with Yona of the Dawn. Thank you.

Ahh I’ve loved Yona of the Dawn since the first season of the anime came out and even now it’s still my favourite romance manga ever. So I’m so happy to see someone else recommending it!

Thank you, Hannah, for introducing me to Yona of the Dawn and Snow White with the Red Hair, which sent me down the inevitable rabbit hole for finding even more manga and anime I need to consume! Plus, from one of your other videos, I was not disappointed by your recommendations of 'The Beautiful Ones' and 'Almond'!

I honestly think you'd adore the manga series Witch Hat Atelier. It is such a whimsical, beautiful, cozy and adorable story that truly expresses why I love fantasy and magic. All the characters are adorable and flashed out, there's a found family, it includes a lot of different representation, treats serious topics with respect and doesn't downplay them as simply "jokes" (like some other manga do.) The magic system is so cool and original (it is based on drawing). Not to mention the art style is one of the prettiest I've ever seen.

Oh my goodness yes! I've recently started reading it and just adore everything about it, the magic system, the friendships, the way the plot has progressed is so intriguing and the art style is also gorgeous. it's just everything you love wrapped into one story.

Love your thoughts on YA fantasy! I feel the exact same way, even now at 26. I read it way less now but there’s something about certain YA fantasy that feels so special.

my favourite "people who get it get it" book is Hench by Natalie Zina Walschots. It's about superheroes but uses it to explore the politics of collateral damage by institutions and more but it's super interesting and fucked up and deeply weird and interesting. Such a cool exploration of the genre and also deeply bisexual (though with no romance).
