I have a good friend who face planted on a bike ride. It was catastrophic. She has metal plates in her head. Had reconstruction surgery. After the accident, her little boy wouldn’t ride a bike again because mom wasn’t riding anymore. She got back on a bike and now does triathlons. She even travels with her bike and asks the hotels about the local areas where she can train. Don’t let an accident stop you from what you are passionate about. It can be a difficult barrier to break, but with time everything heals. Best of luck in your recovery. I’ve learned a lot from you in my short time following (a year). I’d like to keep hearing and learning from you.

Thanks Marty, for sharing your testimony. I am happy you won’t exit the EUC scene. You have played a pivotal role in my EUC journey. I am sure the October 14 So Cal Tour will be difficult for you not to participate in, but it would be neat if you could ride the infamous Begode Extreme Bull K6. You would be able to lead the pack with that! I am not sure if Begode will read my comment, but I hope they contribute to the Marty fund, because your channel has been a free advertisement for Begode. Thanks Again

The same thing happened to me Marty. Several years ago, my MCM5 turned off during a ride. Fortunately I had just slowed down to walking pace. 1 minute earlier and it would have had been much worse. It turned on again and while I was walking it home it turned off again and never turned back on. It put me off riding for 6 months, but my mojo came back. I since have had a V11 and now an S22 Pro. I have been riding exactly as as long as you, but far fewer kilometres. I am also 62 and coincidentally, I broke my foot on Saturday. Ironically, I had just finished a 75km ride and I broke my foot getting out of a chair when my leg was asleep. Fortunately public health care here in Australia is great and I was fast tracked through ED, x-rayed, fitted with a special shoe and sent home without putting my hand in my pocket. Get well soon and look after yourself. We don't heal quite so quickly at our age. We have to keep riding though to fly the seniors' flag.

Hey Marty, my heart goes out to you being laid up like this. You gave a lot of tough love in this video toward the community and I agree with you. After riding non-stop for about three-and-a-half years I hurt my knee and haven't been able to ride for 4 months. During this time off I've been able to spend a lot more time with my wife and sons and looking back on it I realized I was being selfish by spending so much time riding and driving to places to go riding every single weekend. Since my injury I've been spending all of my time of them as they are getting older and it was actually a blessing to get me to stop riding so much and spend more time with them that I'll never be able to recoup. Best of luck with surgery today.

Sorry to hear about your accident. I’m 63, and I have had 2 falls recently . The first was my fault. The second was on my first ride an the CP mini and had the wobbles. First time they dumped me backwards. Landed like you. A lot of soft tissue, no broken ribs. Finally looked at my wheels today. 9 days later. Take your time, heal.

Here in Finland we pay taxes from our salaries, depending on your income usually about 20-40%, this then finance the public services. Public services include public health services. When my father had major heart surgery I payed about 40 USD per hospital day. For ambulance an equal amount regardless of the distance it drives. Getting an appointment to a general practitioner is harder, but one visit within the NHS would be about 20USD. So we pay for the good of everybody from our salaries every single month. You can go to private healthcare also here in Finland, then you get faster service, but only the rich can afford that over here. But that’s just an explanation of our public service system. I thought it might be interesting to know as you kindly explained how it works in your own country. Back to the accident you had: I really feel your pain and hardship. I’m happy that you have a good wife and not having to work as a pensioner AND that you’re insured. The way you describe your family and how you help out in the EUC community I’ve seen on KZfaq, it’s clear you’re both knowledgeable and nice. So take care, get well soon! And you’ll be riding again one fine day.👍

I once developed firmware for network adapters. The nastiest bug in my career required 3 internal events to occur at the exact same clock cycle, which would cause a CPU crash and reboot. The only way to reproduce the failure was to pound a server with maximum traffic from a dozen client computers… and wait nearly a full WEEK for the reboot to occur. My point to everyone is to be cautious on new firmware and ALWAYS wear safety gear.

Your insights and perspective has been an instrumental guide to me as it relates to designing more robust and compelling wheels for all experience levels. When we look back on this industry/sport/community a few years from now, you'll be able to take pride in the fact that you've influenced so many and so much with your passion and dedication to the electric unicycle community. Heal well and rest up, thanks for everything!!!!

Also, it's really odd to me that the manufacturers don't have a more robust test-bed platform for their wheels. I come from a background applying magnetic levitation to robotics for precise control systems, and I am shocked at how few QC steps are taken, how few redundancies are built into these wheels, and the overall lack of finish there is on the electronics. Unfortunately, this is kind of the nature of small batch electronic manufacturing - the volume is too low for better design testing before tapeout, design freeze etc.... And the volume is too high for real craftsmanship and granular sub-component and systemwide QA. Ideally a manufacturer will intentionally overstress and destroy a dozen or more wheels on a test-bed to break a wheel every which way they possibly can before greenlighting a design for batch one production, and batch one normally would go to insiders only to get real use data. We should not only expect this level of dilligence from manufacturers, we should demand it. I hope with increased base volumes, manufacturers will invest in producing fewer wheels with dramatically higher levels of fit & finish- inside and out.

I have been riding for a long time as well. Not as long or as much as Marty, but I've been following his channel for at about 5 years. I've had 1 cutoff in many wheels and miles worth of riding and it was NOT a good experience. The wheel was Kingsong 16S and probably caused by battery too low, going too fast, and an encounter with a pothole. No broken bones, but I was feeling that one for about a year. There are a lot of loose wires and moving parts inside a wheel and it wouldn't take much for something to go wrong. In the case of the A2, it probably wasn't wiring and the root cause may never be known. Intermittent failures are frustrating because they are so difficult to root cause - and often, the cause is never found. Thank you for your years of service to the EUC community Marty. You bring up good points about the risks involved and the consequences of accidents. I've thought more than once about the wisdom of riding given my circumstances, but thus far, I continue to do it.

i feel your pain. Almost broke my ankle with the mten4 several months ago but it was due to human error. I had a bad habit of squatting excessively to dampen bumps and dips in the road. I found myself unable to stand up and recover when I was caught in the dip between the decline and incline of a street. Instead of falling off, as you normally would when you lose balance, the mten4 shifted and the weight of my entire body sank into my left ankle. It felt like my shins would explode. Didn't actually break anything, but I spent several weeks hobbling on crutches and coping with the swelling.

If you ride an EUC you have to accept the much greater than zero risk of injuring yourself. I know MANY riders, personally, who have broken or seriously injured themselves. The rewards of riding an EUC outweigh the downsides IMHO.

I hope you regain full use of your ankle and you have a good recovery. Can't say you've given me any confidence in Begode's safety or engineering. It sure sucks to be immobilized for a while. Mobility is everything!

Hey Marty, I crashed my Begode RS at 40 mph last Christmas (over torqued it, my fault) and did kinda the same break on my ankle. I broke both the tibia and fibula, dislocated my ankle plus a compound fracture. I just got the plates and screws removed last month and finally starting too feel normal. The worst part was the muscle atrophy (SERIOUSLY), it was the hardest thing to bounce back from. P/T is really hard and I think you have a good support network to help you, I was glad I did. Anyways I replaced the RS 4 months after the accident and was riding it before I was able walk right. I just bought the commander mini and I'm looking for an A2 to round out the collection. I'm 50 and healed well, I'm sure you will do the same. Cheers and I hope you are able to ride again! P.S. The recovery has been amost a year and I have more work to do so don't get discouraged, last tip; get a massage therapist when the time is right (after 2nd surgery if you have metal plates) , I had a lot of residual numbness and that helped alot.

Wow. Sorry to hear, and you've had a rougher journey. Unless the metal bothers me I have no intention of getting any of it removed. Interesting that you had the same broken bones and dislocation. It's been ~2-1/2 months and I feel like I can just about ride again. Not much pain anymore but lots of stiffness and restricted motion. Guess that's what I'll be working on. Thanks for the encouraging words!

thanks for the update and sorry for your break. I had my eye on the A2 since your vids I saw a month back wanting a better tire on asphalt. I will wait till they find out what went wrong before I put my order in. Lucky I live in BC where its free medical. I checked online and an ambulance is $80 can$ here. But Im still 68 and my bones dont heal as they use to. Lucky I do ride my T4 like an old man tho lol. I see a Scooter in your future

Thanks. I can guarantee that they are not doing any additional investigative work on the A2 🙂 it was a freak failure that will remain unsolved. Yeah, definitely prefer not to break anything at our age. Fortunately the odds are in your favor that you won't

it's just my guess, but when you lifted up pedals slighly, you sort of locked up your foot and when you were falling the pads , especially if they were thick , didn't let your foot get off the padals freely . don't blame everything on the wheel. Your love for tuning and extra gear could play a bad trick as well. one defected wheel after those 50 wheels you've tested is not that bad after all.

Begode should have taken that EUC back to find out what was causing it to stall. If that controller has a problem, then all controllers of the same model and batch production might have the same issue.

Sorry to hear about your injury Marty heal up fast. One of the reasons I sold my EUC was the potential for an accident. Especially one like yours where nothing you did could have mitigated it or prevented it...other than not riding the wheel in the first place.

Thanks Marty for great video. It is awfull situaton about this falling. I hope You will be good soon!... Yeah, this was not to be overloading cutoff on so slow speed. Seems some other critical mistake inside controller. Could be some temporary short circuit or firmware mistake, so wheel shutted down. Today morning I was ready to sell my MCM5 in couple of days (buer was ready to get this), so later to buy Begode A2 .... now I in doubt about this ... EUC society will wait for You back on non asassian wheel :) Good luck!
