Join us again on Expedition Extinct as we look at the Mystery Funhouse Orlando. Located just across the street from Universal Orlando, this attraction existed for nearly 25 years before being left mostly abandoned. In 2019 the fun house was knocked down leaving not much remaining.
Created by WestGate Timeshare owner David Siegel it opened in 1976 and closed in 2001.
A unique attraction which failed to stand the test of time.

I went there numerous times as a kid. I'll never forget choosing between the "easy way out" or the"crawling maze"..This attraction definitely influenced me when I did haunted houses later on in life. It's so sad how all good things/times must come to an end.

I loved this place. I went by there the last week it was open. The guy the ticket booth said don't even worry about paying me just go inside there and have a good time for the last time. I have personally met Mr. Segal and his beautiful wife Mrs. Segal. They are truly wonderful people who have gotten a bad image from the documentary and people who have never met them. They suffered through some great tragedies and have held on together while many other families would have folded. I went to a party at the Cocoa Beach pier after the Mr. Segal bought it. The whole family was there and you could see they really love each other. This is the last time I saw the daughter they lost to these terrible pill Mill epidemic that has hit Orlando Florida. I wish the Segal'ss well and hope that someday the mystery fun house can return and bring memories of joy to my children and grandchildren. Thank you Mr. Segal for all the great fun I had at the mystery fun house over the years.

I had a birthday party here as a kid, around 1996 or so. I remember Starbase Omega and the transport ship effect being a cool touch. I remember a laser shooting gallery, the animatronics, pizza, gift shop, etc. I remember it was a good time over all but there was definitely a feeling of this place being the Diet Coke of entertainment in the area, and some of the props and parts of the building were showing some age and disrepair at that time, roughly 5-6 years before closing. Still it offered something different, especially for us local residents (we live about 40 mins away). A lot of the non-disney places were appreciated for birthday parties because parents could afford to bring your friends along without paying and arm and a leg. Plus it gives you some diverse memories, since everyone knows what Disney and Universal have to offer but only a select few remember MFH. I'd like to think if their branding, marketing, and upkeep been different, they could have survived the dreaded 2001 slump in the area and remained a novel attraction like Medieval Times has. It will always remain a good memory of getting my friends together and having a fun time.

I visited the Mystery Fun House twice on separate family vacations. The "tacky tourist trap" and "greatest place ever" monikers were both true. It wasn't "better than Disney" but it was definitely a fun trip - especially during the summer when it seemed like it would rain for two hours every afternoon and the Fun House was all indoors and a relief to get out of the humidity for a while. I remember being terrified to go in when I was young because the lobby was styled like a haunted house with skeletons and constantly played Bach's Tocatta and Fugue in D-Minor, perhaps falsely telegraphing that it was all scary, though it wasn't all horror-themed. The attraction was quite elaborate and took at least 20 minutes to go through. I remember you entered through a "secret passage" pushing open a hinged wall through the giant fireplace into a mirror maze. There were sectioned rooms with themes as described, tilted room, a forest with a suspension bridge and a dragon, and a chamber of horrors with lots of quite gruesomely detailed scenes behind glass, plus the requisite funhouse light up scares, air-cannons, flashing lights, and lots of loud noises. It was possible to skip the chamber of horrors through a bypass hallway. There was one place where a large mirror had a sign that beckoned you to look closely and when you approached a ghoul would light up on the other side. There was one part where you went up a ramp in the dark and the glass floor lit up underneath showing a man covered in rats. Lots of other funhouse gags...I seem to remember entire rooms of blacklight art, swinging bags, bouncy floors and flippy rope ladders with padding underneath - most every physical thing had a bypass lane for people who didn't want to do them. The end was a 10-15 minute movie shown in a mirrored infinity room on a (not very big) screen that I remember being a legit documentary of the scariest movie horror scenes with loud noises and room lighting effects that made it actually *quite* startling at times. The attendants would often warn parents with young children away from staying in the room for the movie, and it also had a bypass to the exit, where you could also double back to the very beginning of the fun house if you knew which way to go. They didn't seem to mind us going through again and again once we paid and were inside. There was a whole network of section bypass and access tunnels that were there for employees and guests so nobody would manage to get lost or stuck in any one room.

I worked there in 88-89! Worked in the star base omega. Nothing worked properly by then. The scores at the end were randomly generated. Had a 7 year old girl beat a group of marines. Fun time explaining that one.

First let me say I loved Mystery Fun House. I had several birthday parties there. It was the kind of place adults would let preteens go unattended. That alone was a huge draw for us! The ONLY downside was the fake scores at Star Base Omega. I was so bummed to find out they were just random numbers! There were also several Raves there before it closed. Those were something I’ll never forget.

I belong to the "loved it" column. The fun house, while scary as hell in my younger years, was so much fun later on. The glass room was a blast, and I still remember how the skewed room played "Walk like an Egyptian". My favorite thing was the blade swinging over the guys stomach which would just miss him as he breathed in and out to avoid being sliced. It was so dark.

Back in the 80’s I visited a friend who had moved to Orlando to work as an actor at Disney. I knew of Mystery Fun House but he was the one who insisted we go. We had a blast laughing at ourselves as we toured through- I especially remember the disco room where we stopped and danced on the lighted floor, the tilt room, and the ladder climb. I always assumed that Universal somehow swallowed the place up and there was no evidence. Until a couple of years ago when I was on a solo trip to Orlando and stayed at my usual hotel on Major Blvd. I’ve stayed there many times, and it’s across the street from one of those places that offers coupons and ticket deals to tourists. I’d wonder in passing about the strange building, as it looked weirdly abandoned in an area of prime real estate. Well one night I was stumbling back to the hotel from a nearby Friday’s and cut through the parking lot of the building. A small weather-beaten sign drew my attention and I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw that it said Mystery Fun House. I was across the street from it every time I visited all those years. The next day I went in, announced myself as a fan of weird attractions and asked if there was anything left inside for me to see- I would’ve loved a tour. The guy must’ve thought I was weird and he said no but it seemed like he was just putting me off. Anyway, I was glad to know the weird building still exists and enjoyed watching this video. Thanks.

I sure do remember visiting this place as a kid. I was fortunate to have also gone to Disney alot too, but Mystery Funhouse wasn't even close to the scope of Disney even back in the 80s. Still, it was a fun diversion for a pre teen. Until we were older & bigger enough to enjoy Malibu Grand Prix which was close by Mystery Funhouse. I'll be sure to let u know if I ever get to use a time machine... sigh! Good times back then 😢

I remember going to this place as a kid. It was fun for what it was. You can't really compare it to Disney. They aren't even the same thing, one is a giant multi billion dollar theme park, the other is basically a small roadside attraction. So that comparison isn't really fair

I went to this place SO many times in the late 70's and early 80's, usually with a group of friends, and we all loved it. It was borderline tacky, but had an odd charm about it that kept bringing us back. There was also a "sister" attraction of sorts, in Daytona Beach, called "Baron Fun Frite's Castle", which is now also extinct. I'm pretty certain the same company was behind that attraction as well, although I never got to visit that one. Could you maybe consider doing a video about it? I've tried to find out more info about the Castle over the years, but there is very little on-line about it. I used to have a brochure about the place when I was a kid, but it has been misplaced years ago.

This place really sticks deep in the recesses of my mind. My memories of it are so heavily emotional, yet I have zero recollection of the details. All I remember is the huge parking lot, the wizard head at the entrance, and the spinning tunnel. I don't remember who I went with, how old I was, or how many times I went. I don't recall any of the rooms mentioned. But I do remember the feeling that this is the funnest place in the world!

Your videos are brilliant! I grew up in FL, visited all of the "old Florida" attractions in my youth, and even worked for the House of Mouse for several years beginning in the mid-70s. I remember Walt Disney World as a scale model in a trailer in a swamp, with a second showcase & scale model, featuring a now-familiar golden geodesic dome, representing Disney's long-term plans. For Orlando folks like my parents, driving out to see those models was a local "thing to do" of a Sunday afternoon in the final year or two before the park opened. Before that, we lived in Tampa, home of Busch Gardens (and the wonderful Lowry Park & Fairyland - Lowry Park now rebuilt and restyled as ZooTampa & Fairyland, itself long extinct, recently, miraculously, partly resurrected). Between that, and having my mother's family living in Hendersonville, TN (home of Opryland), theme parks were on some level my natural habitat. Your posts take me back, in the best possible way -' and your research is just outstanding!! Thank you!! One note on pronunciation, something you'd have no means of knowing if not a Floridian of the era: the name of the state's governor at the time, Reubin Askew, is pronounced: 'ROO-bin 'ASK-yoo, vs. 'ROO-bin A-'SKYOO ... ... only fitting, I guess, since he's widely thought to be one of Florida's - and the U.S. 20th Century's, overall - best (and least "crooked") 😉 governors** LOL Hope this helps. Off to watch another of your great vids now! 👀👍. Thanks again!! ** - en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reubin_Askew, Notes 2 & 3

I visited the Mystery Fun House once in 1995 or 96 and I don’t remember much of it. I do remember one room that had a swinging bridge leading to a temple with an animatronic dragon behind glass. Here there was a separate pathway for handicapped guests to go through who couldn’t make it across the bridge. My mother who was very easily scared chose to go through that way while my father took me across the bridge. I’ve always wondered what was down that other path.

My fifth grade class was in a commercial for Mystery Fun House in 1995. We took a charter bus from school to Mystery Fun House (super fancy bus for a less than 10 minute drive). I walked up to the building about a year ago. Silver dome was completely destroyed by the hurricane. The golf wizard is still there! And a few other golf bits. It's a tourist and ticket advice centre now and takes deliveries for Westgate hotels. I can only imagine that some cool original stuff is still inside the building. Even of they did rebuild it, it would never be the same as it was. Health & safety would be all over it! They'd have to definitely update some things!

Great video, brought back a lot of good memories! How about Rock on Ice on International Drive? That was the place to be when I was a middle schooler, they even opened up a miniature "teen" nightclub upstairs before they shut down for good.

I was terrified of MFH when I was very young, I came to love it and we went often. We were heartbroken when they closed. I love your videos. Edit: they had the craziest bathrooms, you felt dizzy. Black and white uneven tiles on the floor and walls with whacky mirrors.

I visited and Worked there for a Summer. Loved it. Made Cotton candy there. Greeted. Worked the Signature Booth inside. And The Wizard show. I loved the place. Nostalgia. Wish it was still around.

Ironically when I was small we used to stay at a West Gate resort and I remember going to Mystery Fun House around 3 times, it was such a fun place.

I was a kid the first time my dad took me. Was kinda scary for a kid but I enjoyed it a lot more once I reached high school. My friends and I would go there a lot. It was a relatively cheap evening of teenage fun.

I loved this place visiting Florida as a child. My parents always brought me to Disney, but I would BEG to go to mystery fun house. Even as an adult I've wondered if this was a dream, or if it actually existed. Now I know that it was real.

My family still has a time share with Westgate Resorts. I remember we got free tickets to the Mystery Fun House back in the day. It was a nice little diversion but certainly couldn't hold a candle to Disney, Universal, or even Fun Spot.

Great doc. on this, I wish they would rebuild it! I think they could have stood the test of time, even in the technological age, kept original, maybe with some new advancements. A Florida treasure~!

I vaguely remember seeing a TV 📺 promotion for it while we were on Disney property back in the early eighties during our stay at the Contemporary Resort. No car to get us off property back then. Flew in to the area and took a courtesy bus to WDW.

I saw a TV ad for Mystery Fun house on my 1977 visit to Florida. A free trip to Mystery Fun House was also a prize on a local game show. However, it was the brochure (an early one that folded open once) that piqued my interest.

We were at The Fun Spot last week and were talking about The Mystery Fun House. I went there twice around 1993 and 1996. The second trip was as a camp counselor of 2nd and 3rd graders. I don't remember it being scary. Lazer tag was fun in that dome.

Westgate Resorts, that's a name I haven't heard in a long time. I still remember when my family went to the one off of 192 for a tour of the resort for a discount on theme park tickets. I always wanted to stay there because the arcade they had was free (or at least that's how I remember it).

Theme Park History your not crazy the arcade in west gate lakes were free along with the kid center. My family owned the time share till recently. But last time I went was back in 2015 and now everything cost money. The quality went down big time. And even then I would do the tour to score tickets I just never said I owned it lol.

My ex husband worked there and a lot of friends, too. When I would go there, I would get extra attention from the staff and my friends! Lol! “Kiiiiiimmmmm!” So funny! The exorcist room was usually a small woman, but when she was off, it was a small hippie dude. 😂 😉
