Can't echo the Revita recommendation enough, it handles optional challenge and risk vs reward so well. The hollow knight style health recharge that also can be used to increase max health at reduced efficiency, paired with both shops and item upgrades that consume either health or max health just click perfectly. It also does alternate paths and run variation on par with Isaac for sure

Revita is so good, and deserves more praise. The health/economy combination feels really really good once you get used to it. In other games you spend your money to buy more health, so it doesn’t feel that different. It’s just a matter of getting your brain to adjust to the idea of giving health away at every corner. It really feels to me like Gungeon with better pacing. Runs can get long, but it doesn’t make you crawl through empty corridors looking for things. You immediately jump from one room to the next, making runs feel snappy and flow well.

i would really enjoy an essay style video from you. I think it will take you a few months on and off though. Really enjoying these... listicles...

Im glad you spent a good amount of time on Revita, for those who havwnt played it but love roquelikes, Revita is amazing! It has a ton of content, way outvalues the cost & definitely one of my favorite Rogues of last year!

The void rains upon her heart is easily the most underrated rougelite. It has like 400-500 reviews, without a single negative one. It's such an amazing game.

I dont know how well it is known, but Wall World was new to me this week, and it is amazing. Ive played like 17 hours in 4 days. Astral Ascent was fun for the first couple hours, but when you get to the second and third world it is just a repeat of the first with different colors.

Dungreed! Absolute must play that will hook you quick. Hope you try it out sometime. Astral ascent is almost reaching 1.0 and is phenomenal. Revita is an all time great game. Must play games IMO.

Ember knights is super fun and I think 1.0 is this month, plus coming to switch.

I always think that one of the most underestimated roguelikes is Meteorfall: Krumit's Tale. Even though it's mechanic may seem simple on the outside is actually pretty hard to master, it offers a wide amount of possible "decks" to fiddle with and a lot of passives that spice up your build and synergize with it, a considerable amount of characters to learn each with their own gimmick and tiles, it delivers a different kind of roguelike cardbattler experience of what we usually see and it has a really charming artstyle reminiscing of Adventure Time which is nuts. I can see how it can feel a bit repetitive in the beginning until you start to unlock some of the more special tiles but once you get the basic mechanics the game starts to show its true potential. Don't know if you've played it Dan but maybe since you've been playing more deckbuilders this year (at least Wildfrost) you could give it a try :D

Revita is truly great, and I've been on the fence about Ember Knights and Astral Ascent for a while now. I was thinking of waiting until they leave Early Access, but now I just might take the plunge. But the real eye-opener of this video has been Wally and the Fantastic Predators. I've never heard of it before this video, and it looks fantastic. That's an easy buy now that it is on sale.

Oddly enough just before I watched this video I was on the Switch eshop to preorder Double Dragon Gaiden to get 10% off before launch and I saw Going Under on 75% discount so I picked that up as well. As for Double Dragon I am taking the risk as I loved Streets of Red the devs previous game and Double Dragon rougelike seems like a win to me.

Typical Dan. Teases us by promising a video of himself reading an in depth essay on the new "bullet heaven" genre, but doesnt commit to a time frame. You know how to keep us veiwers wanting more. Also, everyone, go play Revita!

God i hate card games on consoles and platforms. I get theres an appeal to some but theres something about them that just seems lazy and unrequired in the space.

Revita was too much of a win harder game. If you don’t do well or fall behind in upgrades due to luck, you get hit more, losing currency/health and you build up less multiplier, so you get less currency/health, then you get to the next chest/shop/upgrade opportunity and have to reduce yourself to even lower health or fall further behind in damage. On the other hand if you do well you can generate more and more currency then start steam rolling, giving yourself more and more opportunity to scale. There are A LOT of low impact items to which if gotten earlier instead if decent damage options can feel really underwhelming. Honestly I am worried about them adding so much content. Between the full release and early access they nearly doubled the content too, without vetting it, which diluted the item pools and synergies further, while also introducing new balance issues and some glitches. The game noticeably worse between early access and full release
