The ABSOLUTE BEST way to do 808s in Logic Pro X (10.5 UPDATE) | Q-Sampler 808 Tutorial

EDIT: something pointed out to me on reddit... when dragging into optimized on the Q-Sampler you don't need to adjust the pitch at all. It tunes it to be the correct pitch on your keys. When using the Original mode however you would need to do this. Sorry for the mix up!
And we back.
In this video I want to go over my new workflow for importing 3rd party 808 samples into my Logic Pro X projects. The Q-sampler, a plugin that came with the new 10.5 update to Logic is our workhorse for anything sample based, and in this case 808s. It's a simple drag and drop process and then a couple quick tweaks and you're ready to make your 808 patterns. I will be showing you how to import your 3rd party 808 samples, how to setup the Q-sampler and some other parameters to get the most out of your samples, and then finally a couple of techniques and FX plugins to really make your 808s stand out in the mix if they're not quite present in your track.

@J Ru I struggled with the same when I started out. you would have to go in depth of music theory to have a complete answer. but to begin with I can answer some of your questions to the best of my abilities. yes when a song is in the key of G the other instruments will most likely also be in the key of G but that depends which genre and what is the structure of the song. for example the concept of Jazz which is improvisation is often changes key scales but it still works. thing is you can switch from one key to another by using different methods.. But to be simple yes Basic pop / Rap songs are in one key most of the time. and Yes the 808 is supposed to be in key with the song , but it's not the end of the world once again music has no rules. G6 international hit had an off key 808 , KSHMR did that unintentionally and it sounded good so don't forget to trust your ears. I'm still a very far from understanding scales but one thing I can tell you is that you're patience is required lol .

Yes bro! So happy to see you building your channel... the determination and hard work is showing. Before you know it you'll have 100k subs! Just keep pushing... I noticed you slightly covered your method of organizing samples. I really want to get organized and I was hoping you could help. Root note, Dirty, Clean are some categories I saw you implement. Have you ever thought about organizing sounds based off frequency ranges (or peaks)? That way you could match reference tracks with ease. I would love to hear your opinion because you're such a clear and concise guy.
@itstonyholiday
@itstonyholiday 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I've been slacking lately on the vids but I'm happy that they're still resonating with people. I plan on making some more soon, just trying to tackle an issue that's going to make for a video. As for the organizing and frequency ranges. You mean for one shots specifically? I haven't really considered it tbh, I find the Key/Dirty/Clean thing to work pretty good as that's really the things that I look for when grabbing an 808. Plus once you drag it into the Q-Sampler it automatically shows you the root note and pitches it to C for you (provided you drag it onto optimized). Conclusively, and this isn't meant to be mean... but I just don't see the argument for why you'd label them by frequency range? Seems more complicated and might just throw me off if I'm in a good workflow. Hope that helps, let me know if this isn't what you meant! And thanks for always showing love Casey, really appreciate it.

T Heezy, thank you so much man, especially for making up to date vids with logic pro 10.5. I and I'm pretty sure everyone else here appreciate you and very thankful. I'm somehow stuck on only being able to watch your tutorials which bring me to my next point. Do you have it in your sight to make a mix/master vid with logic 10.5?

@itstonyholiday 4 жыл бұрын
My man! Thank you so much, really happy that you're finding the content helpful. Stay tuned for more on 10.5 + I also want to start doing more beat making/cookup vids. As far as mixing and mastering, I am not the greatest at either (but definitely want to get better at mixing) so doing a tutorial at this point would be an injustice, maybe in the future when I feel more knowledgeable about the subject. However here's my process so you can apply this and then find out for yourself the best way for you: After all tracks are in the project, FX, EQ, etc* 1) Gain stage/make sure nothings clipping at any stage of the signal flow 2) Level out my tracks so they sound good to me 3) Automation 4) Do some more dialing with compression/EQ 5) Master... I just use Ozone 😂 Hope that helps point you in the right direction so you can get started. Thanks for the love and support on the vids!

@@itstonyholiday Ah everyone has that worry about how well they are communicating technical concepts. You gotta think, you essentially get two types of people here. Those that are looking for an answer asap because they are probably in the middle of a Logic session and those that are looking to understand as a whole. I think this content caters to both. Me personally, I was in the middle of a track and I came here, jumped around a bit to get a jist then did my thing. I then came back later on and watched the video through from start to finish. To any young aspiring producers, take advice like this guy offers. Take classes. I did 2 years in college when I was 17 and learned a vast amount about music production and theory. You can learn so much online now, but being in a college setting with other like-minded people getting first hand experience with hardware is so good for anyone wanting to progress with anything. Check your local colleges for courses in Music Tech. 2 years will fly and you'll learn more than you would in 10 years just tryna figure it all out on your own

Hey thanks for the reply. I also have one more question about the new 10.5 update. In previous versions, ESX24 could be used to make synths from scratch, and basically design them how you want them. Is there any way to do that in the new Logic Sampler? Thanks again
@itstonyholiday
@itstonyholiday 4 жыл бұрын
@@AnonYmous-wg7kl I never created synths from scratch from within EXS24, was there oscillators in there? I just used it as a sampler. I don't believe there is any oscillators within the Multi-Sampler. You can however take one shots and create really cool instruments with the tools they give you inside it. That's what I'm thinking I will do for my next video but just need to fine tune a few things first. Thanks for the shout!

Yo really liked this video very informative👌🏼 just saying though if you put it to original and then select classic instead of one shot you can get the same effect as the AR without the hassle. But obviously you’d still have to drag out the midi notes to how long you’d like it. Also, if you take the attack to about 20 milliseconds it takes off that little clip you hear when the 808 hits so it’s just a nice thud💯

Big thanks in advance and double thumbs up for your channel;)

Hey David, thanks for the comment and double thumbs up! Great question. Just putting your 808 at 0db isn’t the recipe for making it loud per se. It’s about making it fit with the other tracks (mixing) and then bringing up the loudness using a maximizer or limiter. Throw on a distortion plugin too and see if that can bring out some high frequencies. Thanks again for watching and the comment 🙌

Hello! I made a mistake when I explained that, I mentioned in the pinned comment what I said wrong. Basically if you drag an 808 into the Q-sampler as optimized it will assign it's pitch to the proper keys of your piano roll. The pitch indication is the original pitch of the sample that you dragged in. Hope that helps, thanks for watching!
