This is a full experiment and shows you 2 sweet potato varieties started in water and in starting mix on the same day. The starting mix method is the absolute best way to start your sweet potato slips. I also cover what to do with the slips to prepare them for planting. A whole potato on its side in starting mix. Just sit it by a window. No grow-lights needed.

I have actually gotten, so far, nearly 20 slips out of one tiny section of purple sweet potato, that I purchased on a road trip, from an organic market. I cut the top portion, about the size of a ping-pong ball, where there were buds, and placed in soil, not even a whole potato. She has, so far, been a beautiful slip producer. I praise and thank her every day for being so generous - so grateful. I am excited to see what her slips will produce this fall. this has been a fun growing experience. I love my little sweet potato "mama".

You don’t need the whole sweet potato to make plenty of slips. I’ve cut the end 4th and put it in the soil with cut side down and about 1/2 covered with potting soil. I got 18 slips! If you want them to come out faster, put an heating pad under it. I got slips sprouting in less than a week and ready to cut for rooting in water within two weeks.

It works so much better to lay them in soil and then cover several inches with peat moss and then moisten. The slips grow up through the peat moss and will have a nice root system when you pull them off. Also, the peat moss is slightly acid which helps keep the sweet potato from rotting. Credits go to sand hill preservation farm for their dedication and work and sharing their knowledge publicly so I could learn and use it! Thank you Sand Hill Preservation!

I agree, better in soil but see no need to use peat moss. Its usage is very detrimental to the environment and many growers and horticulture associations across the world are no longer using it for this reason.

@@ruthie4773 I agree - Peat moss is a non-renewable resource that's being harvested far too much! Harvesting it releases more carbon into the atmosphere. Compost is a much better option. Producing your own compost is the best.

Always enjoy your videos. The ax throwing and pellet gun shooting totally surprised me! Super cool. I've got a tip for you. Klein electrical scissors. They'll cut through pretty much anything, and are the best garden tool I've ever used. You can find them in the electrical tools section at HD, Lowes, etc. they're less than $20 and for a bit more, they can be had with a leather belt pouch (which I recommend getting with them, I put a small fixed blade knife, and a pen and pencil in the second compartment). I use them to prune small branches (pencil size), cut drip line, cut peppers off plants, cut thin metal strapping, cut unruly eyebrow hair, trim the roots off of green onions, harvest heads of lettuce, and on and on and on. I like the traditional scissor models, not the high leverage longer bar that some have. Seriously, give them a try. I think you'd be impressed. I think you should do a review on them too. I'd love to see more people using them. (I installed low voltage voice and data lines for fifteen years, and they were my main tool for stripping and cutting the wires during that time.) Here's a link to them on amazon. www.amazon.com/Klein-Tools-2100-5-Electricians-Scissors/dp/B00093GD7W/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=klein+electrician+scissors+with+pouch&qid=1586698862&sr=8-3

I tried sweet potatoes for the first time this year. I just took 1 small potato and cut it in half and done the toothpick and water thing. So far I've taken off about 11 slips and there are still 13 growing on the potatoe halves. It has taken quite some time as I started them 2 months ago, I'm considering experimenting and just planting the halves with the rest of the slips on to see what happens. But yeah I think next year I'll try the soil method if it goes a bit faster.

Actually both way worked well for me. I did not use tooth picks but I used a boat which allowed for half to be submerged under water. After 3 weeks in the boat I put them into the starting soil and now I'm cutting slips off literally by the dozen off of one mother potatoe. I was encouraged by both of your methods. Thank you.

Thank you so much! This method works great and it's super easy. I tried the other method with the toothpicks and a jar of water but it was way too slow and my sweet potato started to rot. It's only been 3 weeks and I have at least 20 slips and most of them are already 4-6 inches tall. Thanks again Gary.

So, for my sweet potatoes started in water, it made a difference the kind of water I used. I have a softener and the water straight from the softener didn’t grow very well. But I also have a reverse osmosis water filtration system, and the potato’s I did in that water are doing fantastic! I do also completely change out the water each week and make sure they have access to sunlight. My water ones look like your soil ones!! Thank you for this video!!

Thank you Mr. Pilarchik. It all makes sense. In the wild, no potato leaves the ground, and somehow manages to find a mason jar filled with water. In nature, a sweet potato which stays in the ground would just produce more slips, which would become vines, and produce more sweet potato.

This is going to be a game-changer and lifesaver! I thought that maybe growing sweet potatoes was not for me. I tried for years and had so many that either do nothing or just rot in water. Then I ended up buying plants (when I could find them). I have one with lots of roots on it and SLOW growing shoots I started in February (the other rotted). I'll put it in some dirt today, see what happens and let you know.

Soil is really more effective than water for me. I started my leftover sweet potatoes 10 days ago and now I have tons of slips and more growing. All the slips I have is from a stokes purple sweet potato I got from Costco last year. The orange and white one that I got from whole foods didn’t sprout. The purple sweet potato slips started growing thick fat roots 48hrs after putting them in a jar of water by the window. Can’t wait to plant these!!!! Thanks Gary! - Zee, N. Cali zone10a

Last year and this year I have used the water method and have had good luck, with one exception this year. This year I did Purple Stokes, Jewel, and Garnet. The Purple Stokes went gangbusters, the Jewel has been decent, and Garnet never really sprouted anything and ended up rotting. So it may also have something to do with the variety. But next year I might experiment with the soil method, because as you pointed out it seems to sprout the slips faster.

Thank you, this worked wonderfully! I initially started my potato in water, but I've had bad luck with water propagations going moldy, so after waiting a week and not seeing any roots forming, I switched my potato to dirt. Then...I sort of forgot about it. I watered it maybe once a week? Sure enough, about four weeks later (I didn't pay attention to how long it was supposed to take and figured my sweet potato was a gonner already, since it hadn't done anything) I got a tiny purple sprout! Now, within a single week, it's grown like a weed! I'm thrilled!

Gary, do you think Soaking the sweet potato in water over night before placing it in the potting mix, would encourage the sweet potato to produce shoots much quicker? My sweet potato is taking forever to produce shoots. Man I wish this video came out about three weeks ago, when I put a sweet potato in a red solo cup on my bathroom windowsill. It's got a couple of sprouts just starting to come out now, about two inches long. I'm going to try this method too. Sweet potatoes are one of the few foods I can grow that I won't kill, or get destroyed by bugs. A few years ago I used the water method, but in a larger plastic container with an aquarium air pump and air stone in the water. That improved the production quite a bit. I got slips from that potato for a couple of months before it was expended.
