Andy Dick, the bit actor and sometimes comedian, spent the mid-to-late ‘80s developing his improv skills and honing a stand up routine. This led to regular television roles and sometimes movies. But this wouldn’t last long, because he had a raging addiction, that made him the absolute worst friend to have in Hollywood.

I met Andy in a bar in Wynyard Saskatchewan and he asked me if there was a guy in town he could bump uglies with. I told him yeah, but it was going to cost him 300.00, 100.00 for me setting up the tryst and 100.00 for the intended paramour. He said that's only 200.00. I then reminded him of the guy required to hold down his partner and he said after only a slight pause, okay. He even bought me a beer after. Nice guy.

I was familiar with Andy when he was a kid. His dad was an officer on the submarine base I was at. Andy was early teens and was a squirrel. He ran with the teen girls and caused all kinds of problems, security hated him. Last time I saw him was when our base opened a bowling alley and an admiral came to the opening. Mr. and Mrs Dick, his brother, and Andy were part of the receiving line and Andy was dancing around like a marionette. I felt bad for his dad, who was a good man, because the behavior of kids reflects heavily in the office and Andy either could not, or would not, behave for a few minutes.

Andy's brother, they were adopted so I don't know if siblings or at what age adopted, was close to the parents. Andy was hyper and ran with a group of way too young and too cute girls. Bad combo in Navy base. Andy seemed oblivious to the trouble or simply didn't care. He was only a few years younger than I but worlds apart as I was a petty officer and had joined Navy at 17. I have a buddy who is in the industry in LA. He was eating pizza at a restaurant with his wife one night when Andy Dick came in. Andy went around to all the tables begging for pizza bones. He would sit down with people and grab the pizza bones off of their plates, and eat them. If you don’t know what pizza bones are, they are the crust part that you don’t want to eat. Eventually, the manager came over and had to physically throw him out. I don’t know if he was broke and starving, or if he was just doing one of his drug addled stunts.

Thanks for this OP! I want to mention an MTV Cribs (S7E3) of his place I saw once, that shows a truly dark, ominous, and bizarre side, even for Andy Dick. The episode showed his shabby and sordid residence somewhere in Los Angeles. At one point the camera lingers in a hallway, where Andy Dick had actually hung paintings of Jesus Christ on one wall and Satan on the opposite wall. Dick admitted he hung the paintings that way on purpose...by way of explanation he said something about how he just liked the idea of Christ and Satan being "perpetually engaged in close spiritual warfare for the souls of all mankind" or words to that effect...what could go wrong?

I never saw the draw to this guy or kathy griffin. They were inseparable for a while there. To be sober for as long as some of his friends were, they should have not been involved with him if he was using. They made their choices. We can't blame the addicts inabilities on to someone else. That is another form of enabling. I'm sure his addictions played a part in his antics, however there is a behavioral component here that is sexual in nature. Maybe some underlying abuse he experienced? He as other should always seek help with addiction. Its perfectly ok to reach out for help. At the end of the day you lay your head on that pillow and lie to yourself about being ok...and only you agree.
