The most avoidable catastrophe in racing was Le Mans 1955 when a car got clipped and flew into a wall and large debris was flown into the stands, killing 84 people and injuring 180+. The car, made of magnesium, exploded after flipping onto the wall. The spectator deaths could've been avoided by ACTUALLY HAVING A FENCE AROUND THE STANDS. It was only defended by some hay. This wouldve reduced the many deaths and injuries.

Video Idea- A fan day for either of the major U.S sports(NHL,NFL,NBA or MLB). This fan day would allow fans to be more incorporated with the game. The fans could created new uniforms(designs or colors and maybe a re-imagined logo too). The fans could even come up with or call plays. I think this game being in the preseason would be the best. I think this would be an awesome idea to explore in a video. Keep up with the great content !

I am an American building ice rinks in Germany, and the first thing I learned is to NEVER let a German design or build an ice rink. In 2017 they opened a semi-roofed arena in Schierke, and despite winning all sorts of architecture awards, they immediately discovered that it couldn't safely withstand typical winter weather conditions for the area due to a number of fatal design flaws and the improper use of materials. Nobody has been injured (yet), but it will cost hundreds of thousands of Euros to fix.

The roof at Blyth Arena, the 1960 Winter Olympics ice hockey venue, collapsed in 1983 after the US Forest Service installed insulation. The original uninsulated design was for waste heat to melt the snow on the roof. The insulated roof couldn't melt the snow fast enough, and the roof collapsed under the weight.

At Charlotte Motor Speedway in 2000 after what was then the Winston (NASCAR’s Cup All-Star Race), a pedestrian bridge around the area of Turn 4 collapsed between the track and a parking lot which injured well over 100 departing spectators. It was found that the bridge builder used an imporper additive to help cure the concrete faster, which in fact due to a certain chemical in it corroded the steel cables and caused the collapse.

The Miller Stadium was actually not an engineering failure persay, but rather a cost/time savings act. They knew the winds were higher than what the had been calculated for that lift. They were behind schedule and decided to go ahead and lift the roof section. Which turned into a gigantic wing that created lift, and then floated up, then suddenly drifted down and pulled the crane over.

Stupid frogs never bothered to test the mechanism in a wind tunnel. Actually, the first retractable roof that worked was The Civic Arena in Pittsburgh.

Another one, but it's not really an architectural failure and rather the fault of a natural disaster: after an earthquake in 1994? (I can't remember the exact year) the left field scoreboard in Edison International Field (now Angel Stadium) collapsed and destroyed part of the 3rd deck seats. No one was at the stadium, as it was in January.

My local stadium. Williams Brice stadium was renovated in the 80s with a new upper level. In its first few years the top sections actually swayed from fans and it was noticeable too. Eventually they added shock absorbers and fixed the problem.

REMEMBER : structures are usually built by the cheapest architect, engineer, contractor, & suppliers.. its literally who can barely make this work for the cheapest price possible.. does not exactly fill me with confidence.. greed kills..

I started my college career as a mechanical engineering major, then I realized how fiddly and pedantic engineering is and became a Building Construction Management major, and now my entire job is making sure engineers and architects don’t fuck something up because they were willing to trade a building’s durability for style.

Thank you for the actual footage of the Roman stadium in the early first century. I didn't know the footage still existed.

The Hillsborough disaster from 1989 should be included here. 96 people died because of people getting funneled into pens built to divide the stands on one end of the field and the weight of the people behind crushed the people at the front
