I’m sure you’ve already seen the documentary, “Under Pressure,” on the making of “The Abyss,” but if not it’s fantastic and covers much of what Cameron talks about here and more.

I recall reading that Cameron and Silvestri didn't get along. But neither did Cameron and Horner on Aliens, yet they went on to work successfully together again on Titanic and Avatar.

I'd be fun to learn some of the actors Cameron either initially visualized - or even seriously considered - for the cast that eventually ended up being so indelibly iconic in epitomizing those roles with such enthralling performances that definitively exemplified the harrowing heart of The Abyss in the public consciousness and our fandom? It's just an intersting exercise to imagine what if varietables had evolved slightly different, then what faces might we now be associating with the film instead, and would we celebrate their contribution similarly to who ultimately won as those characters in 1989? I suppose I might be able to envision Kevin Costner, Jeff Bridges or Kurt Russell as Virgil Bud Brigman... Maybe Madeline Stowe, Debra Winger or Karen Allen as Lindsay... Perhaps Michael Paré, Jeff Fehey or Val Kilmer as Lt Coffey...

OH MY GOSH! HOW DID I MISS THIS INTERVIEW?? The Abyss was a bitch to make! Now we have the 4K version and the extended version in 4K as well, including “Making The Abyss” and it’s incredible. James Cameron, don’t complain about the hat tricks! You’re the one that set the bar so high. You’re damn right we expect hat tricks when it’s a film written and directed by you!

How was the transfer? The Discfather on Twitter claims he didn’t like what he saw. What is your take on it? Any signs of DNR? Grain? We just don’t want it to be same level as T2 or Predator the wax edition.

The Abyss was Cameron's Close Encounters and I think its just as great. Cocoon was Ron Howard's and it wasn't quite as masterful
@PJV19909 ай бұрын
Gosh that one idiotic audience question about HFR for Avatar and Jim's future movies... You are at a special screening of The Abyss attending an interview that IS ABOUT The Abyss and you have a once in a lifetime opportunity to ask Jim a question about one of his most underrated movies that was one of the most difficult shoots in Hollywood history and you ask a totally unrelated, moronic question that Jim answered a hundred times during press for Avatar: The Way Of Water. What a fool he was. A total waste of a question, seat and ticket.

@@ScottSullivanTV I think 2.20 also looks best for this film. I saw it in 70mm in 1989 and had a 2.20 version of the theatrical version on laserdisc. 2.35 always looks cramped to me, like it was always intended to cropped at 2.20. Theatrical version is also still my favorite over the special edition.

Wow…his version and Mastrantonio’s version of the reviving scene is very very different. Apparently Cameron had her do MULTIPLE reshoots of that very extreme scene to the point that she was so traumatized she never worked with him again and still will not talk about the scene. I think he downplayed that experience.

I was sitting fairly far back in the auditorium and had to zoom in as much as my iPhone would allow. That’s why the picture is not the greatest (though still HD) and a bit shaky. Sorry I wasn’t shooting on a RED camera with a stedicam setup, lmao.
