What was it about life in the Netherlands that Canadian couple Chris and Melissa Bruntlett found so attractive? So attractive that they pulled up stakes and left Vancouver to actually move to Delft with their two children? The answer is: quality of life.
A big factor that impacts quality of life is how we move around the city. In North America you usually have one choice: the car. In the Netherlands, the Bruntletts discovered, you have a variety of choices: trams, trains and especially bikes (and yes, even cars too). Having these choices significantly improves the quality of life.
In the three years that the Bruntletts have been living in Delft, they wrote a book that came out this year called "Curbing Traffic: The Human Case for Fewer Cars in Our Lives". They joined the John Adams Institute for an online talk and Q&A with the audience about what makes a liveable city and why transportation is absolutely critical. (And yes, having fewer cars helps).

Thank you for this informative chat!! I love cycling in the Netherlands - the safety of the cycling paths/lanes.... even through the parks and forests. And a delightful country chock full of history, culture and yummy food. From San Diego, California - and veteran of 13 bike and barge tours around the country.

Melissa and Chris, Great video, great presentation. I do not understand, why city leaders still trying to develop a new mobility solution... instead to use this solution.

The kind of people making up the core clientele of car sharing in the US and Canada just take the bike or transit here in the Netherlands I think. Because of that there won't be an economy of scale resulting in higher prices and less of an incentive for other people to be swayed to ditch their car so that step in economy of scale is also lost. And cars often come with a job as a side benefit. I think fighting for car sharing in the Netherlands is a doomed right from the start because using the car is nearly always an option and not a necessity.
