Women in tech are absolutely the computer geeks and the engineers, but they are also the lawyers, the policymakers, the activists. And at every level we need more of us.
Tech UK’s Sabina Ciofu hit the nail hard to make sure we remember that we need the diversity of background and thought to develop good tech and good policy for tech. Sabina Ciofu works as Head of EU and Trade Policy for techUK, the trade association representing the UK tech industry. Previously, she worked as Policy Advisor in the European Parliament for almost a decade, focusing on tech-related legislation, international trade and EU-US relations. She is also a PhD Candidate in Defence Studies at King’s College London, where she explores the relationship between artificial intelligence and foreign policy decision-making. Sabina is the founder of the Gentlewomen’s Club, co-organiser of the Young Professionals in Digital Policy and a member of the Global Shapers Brussels Hub, where she led a Europe-wide youth voting and civic engagement project. She holds an MA in War Studies from King’s College London and a BA in Classics from the University of Cambridge. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

This has helped me a lot. I am studying for a job in IT and it's not something I am really interested in. I am more of a performing arts kind of person but it's hard to get jobs in that field or make enough money to survive. So my choice of an IT job was mostly based on money but now your video has opened my eyes to how joining tech could be important for a much larger cause. And you gave me hope that someone who isn't initially interested in IT could still be successful in that field. Thank you! 💞

Well, that's the thing. Guys don't choose it for money. They are deeply interested in the field. You can hardly be successful in something you don't care about.

Sabina's opinions and comments should also be extended to the LGBTQIA+ community -- we need diversity in tech across the board.

I have been working in development centre for many years. Women are usually not deeply interested in the job. I always have to tell them exactly what to do and how to do it and if I slightly change the assignment next time, they are lost again. I don't have to explain anything to male engineers. They just understand what needs to be done and they can operate on their own, they connect the dots and are able to apply experience to solve a new problem. Men graduates are usually better engineers in few months than women with 10+ yrs "experience" in the field.
