I always hated watching any reality tv show/competition because there was always ONE “token” black girl in a room filled of non black people. I had a friend who's sister went on one of the dating shows and she said her cast members would say rude crap and then when she got upset the camera's would be on her making her look like the stereotypical angry black girl. That changed my view on those type of shows. I've also noticed they usually never pick the minorites to win. So it was nice to see this woman won.
@FrenkTheJoy
@FrenkTheJoy Жыл бұрын
America's Next Top Model has its flaws, but it always at least started out with more than one minority contestant, plenty of winners weren't white, and there were some "angry black woman" edits (although to be fair one of those women did get into a public fight in an airport) but also plenty of edits that weren't angry black women, and plenty that were "horribly bitch white women." It's the kind of equality that makes everyone look bad, which is good? But I'm really glad in this case that the overtly racist contestants didn't win.

The Asian girl's remarks -not the "sexy" one, the rac!st one- made me so, so sad/mad. I know they were drunk but that doesn't excuse *anything.* Saying that on national TV, without any shame and without thinking? Zero self awareness as a minority herself- just a mix of jealousy, ignorance, and plain old cruelty. Knowing reality TV at the time, I'm sure other girls must've been super nasty to Tanedra as well, so just for that I'm glad she won lol that's a great middle finger to the girls who disrespected her. But at the end of the day it still makes me so sad to see that kinda comportment- speaking as an Asian woman myself, it's so upsetting to see POC tearing each other down for no reason instead of raising each other up. It's still frequent to this day in a lot of communities unfortunately.

@quayequaye4577
@quayequaye4577 Жыл бұрын
Not to generalize and I appreciate your input but I always felt like these type of shows summed it up perfectly. When put in a room together, other minorities will typically turn on the black person to gain allegiance with the others, being that our color makes it the hardest for us to “pass” or fit in with the majority. She had no problem insulting another minority but rushed to defend the Jewish girl .

Honestly, I dunno if the fatphobia was nearly as bad as the blatant racism and anti-semitism. Largely because she said that the other woman was 50 pounds heavier which, really, wouldn't mean a lot depending on their height and body shape difference (in terms of insult, anyway, as they *could* have a 30-50 lb difference), but it would impact alcohol intake which was the point. Especially since the woman who was called 50 lbs heavier was mocking her at first for not handling her drink well, to which she gave a back-handed reason to. So yeah, it's still absolutely there, but honestly a 50 lbs difference is not always indicative of "fatness", so I guess there's that but eh. And the anti-semitism and racism lines were particularly nasty in comparison. Like…good lord. ;_;

You sound like a Chinese censor taking notes on everything you want removed. I don’t get how it makes you happy to see a depiction of exactly how people should act to offend no one at any time in entertainment. Media made for the purpose of enjoyment isn’t about representing how you think life should be. It’s supposed to be funny which doesn’t have to mean it’s offensive but it has to mean that nothing is off limits.

@@rio6653 You kind of missed my point. I didn’t say there was anything wrong with critiquing this kind of content for being “mean”. I’m just saying that this same type of echo chamber with a general sentiment against anything that could offend anyone leads to worse media content overall. It’s literally just a repeat of conservative tv censorship that occurred in the 80’s and 90’s but from a liberal perspective this time. I want any content that people desire to make to be made if their is an audience for it and then people can choose to critique it and watch it or not. The current state of the entertainment industry is not efficient or capitalistic in that movies/shows that could be made are not because of someone’s moralist opinion, just as was the case in the 80’s.

man, the film industry is fucked. i had an experience in film school where they put directors in as actors and had us reenact ("reinterpret") a sex scene. anything anyone would do would set them off, whether there was choreography, or props. i worked with two partners and they were both great, but the profs were especially hard on me and broke down the scene as if i was doing everything wrong. they did this to literally everybody. it was honestly so painful to do, in spite of the students trying to work together to make the environment and scenes as safe and creative as possible. a lot of us were uncomfortable and one of the professors after the class discussed how the midterm was probably not a good idea, since there was also nothing were could have really done to prepare for it, unless you've taken that class before. just such a bad experience and exercise that i think went on for years and is one of the reasons that caused quite a few ppl to leave the program. including myself. glad i got out of it for now tbh
